What isn’t there to love about Beezie?! I echo everything everyone has already said…but just to add another. She rarely uses “unconventional” tack. She’s a traditionalist and works with her horses, not against them. Her horses typically (I am sure there has been an exception) go in snaffles, pelhams, or gags with two reins and she has the kindest hands! Her horses always look willing, forward, and happy!
Yes, note that in the video from Spruce, the horse was not even wearing a martingale.
I will also point out that the Maddens have people who have worked for them for decades. They tend to have help that sticks around for a long time, so I would imagine they must be treating them right.
I love the way she stays forward to let the horse finish the jump, instead of coming back in the air as so many riders do now. She has enough control of her upper body to come back quickly on landing to get ready for the next fence, so she doesn’t need to do it prematurely. There’s never any flailing around or kicking back with her legs. She looks like an equitation rider even over the biggest fences, which is really impressive!
This popped up in my facebook feed today. Another great story about the Maddens. She’s just inspiring.
Fun to see the picture from the big horse show in Rochester. I think I was there.

Annnnnddd she just won the Gold Cup. Seriously can I be her?
Back in the 80’s Beezie was doing a Puissance in Minnesota. They were at 6’6" or something like that and management asked if she and the other horse still in it wanted to go up by 3" or 6". Beezie’s reply, " 6" is fine, that’s only 2 holes." Her horse didn’t quite clear it and as she came out of the ring. she remarked, “Guess he can’t jump that high.” She’s absolutely hysterical with the quick wit.
