Registered Name Ideas

OK COTHers, my new guy’s transfer papers were sent back, so I have a second chance [if I want it] at choosing his registered name. I was thinking *“Dixie’s He’s a Keeper” cuz he is.

*Oops I had the wrong kennel name. Breeder is Dixe, not Skyfall.

Info for inspiration:

 • Here is the photo (on my FB naming post) that sent me to NC to meet a split-face boy named Bill
 • I met and vetted A LOT of dogs before I found him
 • BF, who is afraid of BCs, had a funny role in this: I drove to the farm because it was doable from his house, where I was already scheduled to be that weekend. It would be too far to drive from my home. A few days after I picked up "Bill," I found out BF had two girlfriends :disgust:! I dropped the dog (man) and claimed the keeper (K9).

I asked my FB friends for ideas and here are ones I like:
Skyfall’s He’s a Keeper
Skyfall’s Without a Doubt
… All Mine
… All Sales Final
… A Boy Named Bill
… Guardian of my Heart –got three “likes” but isn’t really my style

Additional ideas? Any ways to combine some of these with “He’s a Keeper” “All Mine Cuz He’s a Keeper” ??? Eh that doesn’t sound right…

Keeping Him Mine
Keeping My Heart
He’s Keeping Me

Keepin’ the Faith

-but I’m a Billy Joel fan.

Fear the Keeper

Because he will be awesome!

I don’t mind Skyfall’s He’s a Keeper, but I also like just plain old “Skyfall’s Keeper” - simple, says what you want it to say, and doesn’t sound quite as Quarter Horse-y to me as “He’s a _____”.

But I have an Endless Delirium and an Endless By Accident, so some folks might question my judgment… and don’t even get me started on call names - I have a three letter rule for those!

What are the parent names?

I also like Skyfall’s Keeper. Simple and make sense. I’m all for registered names and call names going together though, so I see where you are coming from.

Maybe Skyfall’s For Keeps?

Often AKC registered names have something to do with the breeder- is Skyfall your kennel/farm name or the dog’s breeder’s kennel name? Often we do something like “Skyfall’s Something of Somewhere”, where the breeder’s kennel name and the new owner’s kennel name are both in there.

Then, some people have a system (I use this one) where the registered name starts with the same letter as the bitch’s name. This helps one mentally keep track of the pedigree. I believe this naming tradition is often used by MFHA foxhound packs. So for example I have “Hound Hill Vanga of Aerie” whose dam is “Hound Hill Vale of Aerie” whose dam was “Hound Hill Valley of Aerie” etc., on back for many generations. We are on our own remembering who the sires were!

Other people use “themes” to name litters, flowers or ice cream flavors or movie stars or whatever. Others use letters that correspond to how many litters they have bred, “C” would be their third litter.

Some do have call names derived from their registered names- I know a Something Casual Affair of Somewhere", call name “Risky”, and a “Something Streetwalker of Somewhere” call name “Trixie”.

There are many registered “Something Keeper of Somewhere” where the breeder names the puppy they keep this. I also know many, and have, a “Something Solo of Somewhere” where there was only one puppy in the litter.

So I like to have the breeder’s kennel name acknowledged in the registered name if that is possible. But maybe Skyfall is the breeder’s kennel name?

Oops sorry just re-read OP, now I get it!

Bicoastal, do you have a farm name or name you could use to name horses/dogs?

How about “Dixie’s Keeper of Bicoastal” and think of a general name you could use for your horses/dogs/farm/home name?

Or “Bicoastal’s Keeper of Dixie”? Or look to a dog in his pedigree- since BCs are of Scottish origin, you could use “Mac” to denote “son/grandson” of a male in the line, where there is something you like about the dog or his name, say his name was Heath, you could have “Bicoastal Keeper MacHeath of Dixie” ?

Or it doesn’t even have to be a dog in his pedigree, you could use the name of a past BC you owned or particularly admired, or just a name you like to throw in there with a “Mac” , Yada MacSomething Keeper of Yada or Yada Keeper MacSomething of Yada.

The AKC gives you 25 letters to use, but if you pay a little extra you can use more letters.
Of course there are many other naming traditions to use!

What a cutie.

I like what someone suggested on your FB page “Finders Keepers”. Or “For Keeps”

Parents’ names

Dam is Layla < Sire Dixie’s Gem < Dam Tess

Sire is Bedlamb Koda < Sire Bedlamb Torm < Dam Pepper

My vet just informed me it is uncommon for ABCA breeders to use kennel names. She also said most registered names are the call names. On the ABCA certificate, there is no space for registered name AND call name (like on AKC paperwork). The transfer and open reg from ABCA to AKC is confusing. I’m glad she’s done it a few times and can walk me through it!

Ah, yes, slightly different “cultures”. FWIW though AKC registration certificates do not have a space for the “call” name either.

Meant to say too, what a handsome, appealing fellow! Do you know what he was called before? It is very easy to change a dog’s name of course.

FWIW I know many AKC registered Border Collies whose registered name includes their kennel name and whose registered name is different from their call name. But they can be the same, of course, too -you should register him however it pleases you! As simple or as elaborate as you desire.

My guy is getting a PAL because his breeder was such a mess AKC pulled all the registrations of her dogs. Since I don’t want to be affiliated with her at all I’m putting my prefix on him, Bitz’N Pieces. With that I wanted to do Bitz’N Pieces Life In The Fast Lane but it’s too long for a PAL. Tossed around some other options and settled on Bitz’N Pieces Hellspawn because it totally fits him and he was born in hell. His call name is Enzo.

So I probably shouldn’t give advice, but I like Dixies Finders Keepers Or just drop the Dixies of you want.

Is the kennel Dixe?, or Dixie?

Either way, given the BF’s role, sounds like his name should be “Trading Up!”

Playing for Keeps

The damn’s name (Layla) makes me think of Eric Clapton.

Does the breeder require you to use her kennel name within the reg. name?
If not, then ask for permission before using it.
While I name & reg. all my pups before going to their new homes, I’d be a bit upset if someone used my kennel name without my permission.

Cute boy!!

Bill. Pretty simple! But the whole naming scheme/s is making my head spin!!

Yes, I just asked and wanted clarification since I thought it was Skyfall. Turns out, it’s Dixie.

OMG!! Yaya, you are brilliant!! :applause::applause::applause:

“Dixie’s Trading Up To a Keeper” ?

Or Dixies Traded For A Keeper

When we registered our Juneau we just used the kennel/breeder’s name. So she is simply “Grizzly Hollow’s Juneau”.

But I like Dixie’s Trading Up/Dixie’s Traded Up

Just a minor “warning” about picking a registered name - if you plan to show AKC, remember that you’ll be writing (or typing) that complete name (with titles) on every single entry form that you send in, and then you’ll need to correct any misspellings that the trial secretaries make. One of my girls’ registered name is misspelled (not my fault, the breeder screwed it up) and a) it grates on my nerves every single time I have to put it on an entry and b) the trial secretaries invariably “correct” it for me, and I have to email them back to say, no, that’s not how it’s spelled. Ugh.

It’s sort of the dog show equivalent of giving your horse a really cool name that’s in a foreign language and thus gets butchered by announcers.

TL;DR: Keep it short and simple to make your life a little bit easier!
