Renegade boots VS Easyboot Edge

PLEASE help me decide. The boots have GOT to be comfy for the horse. I trail ride about 2-3 hours at a time, and my horse needs to be comfy. I am just transitioning to barefoot, and he is Majorly sore all around. Has crappy brittle feet and we have to transition( b/c foot is no longer able to hold a nail), so i need something that is good for fronts AND for hinds. His feet are not totally round, more long i guess than wide. Has anyone here tried BOTH of these boots and what would your preference be? i don’t want him to get rubs, and they have to stay on well, obviously. I would love all input on either of these products.

Some people won’t like this, but here goes.

I would not purchase Renegades because of the lack of customer service if you have a problem. I have tried and tried to get in touch with a live body through the Renegade site and have never been able to. $200+ is a whole lotta money to shell out and then have no support if something isn’t right.

I have lots of people in Edge boots and they absolutely love them. They are like cushy bedroom slippers. Put a pair of EVA foam pads in them, and they are heavenly. They don’t get pulled off. They don’t rub horses. They’re just wonderful.

I ordered my own personal set for my main riding horse the other day. I haven’t personally used them but I’ve sold a lot of them to people and haven’t gotten a single negative comment in feedback. The Edge is far and away the best boot Easycare has produced yet.

“EVA foam pad” is that the one that they sell?

I would also like to add that it has been recommended to me that it is better to wait for your horse’s feet to finish acclimating to the barefoot change before buying Renegades. The Renegades are such a specific fit that changes may make them unusable.

thanks so much for the feedback. i like the looks of the Renegade, but yes $200 is a lot, which is why i wanted your opinions. I’m glad to hear the Edge is a great product. Also a bit pricey, but i need something that is going to work. Also we do cross water, and i am guessing that is ok with most boots.

Anyone else with experience, please jump in here.

I have used renegades and Epics. I like them both.

I dont think the Renegades are really a “specific fit”. One size works for both of my horses, front and back. they are super easy to get on and off. I kind of know the owners and often go to the same endurance rides, so I havent had a problem with contacting them and they are VERY nice. If you do get them, I would ask if you can have extra velcro straps and rubber keepers, because they wear out fast in my experience.

I havent used the Edges. Epics take more effort than the Renegades to get on and off but I like them too. they do have more possibility of rubbing.

I have used Epics, Bares, Gloves & Renegades. Haven’t tried the Edge yet, but my horse’s hooves are longtime bare, so I went straight to the Gloves.

But for freshly bare hooves, I think you are on track. Either of those will provide protection and support. And I would strongly suggest putting EVA pads in either one. Imagine your running shoes without insoles and with insoles…yup, insoles win every time! Especially for tender “new” tootsies.

As for customer service, I have had no problem getting response from Kirt Lander, the owner of Renegades. In fact, I had a boot failure this weekend after I…altered…them (oops - my experiment failed), and sent 4 boots back to him for inspection and/or remodel, as needed. No charge. And they always send extra straps. Renegades are VERY user friendly, will not rub, and with pads installed provide a really fabulous all-terrain boot.

Easycare makes great products too, and the horse who wears the Renegades is working this week in Epics. He needed a little adjustment time for the added weight, other than that he’s OK with them. The Edge looks to have a nice adjustment system, and I understand it is intended for horses who might need a little “extra”.

Either way I think you’ll be happy with your choice. Boots have come such a long way in a few short years.

Just got mine, and they included extra straps and keepers, for frees.

so the Renegades are lighter than the easyboots? Have you had any horses have a rough adjustment to either brand? i will definitely get the insoles.

I have both, well I have the epic gators, don’t know about the edge, it looks like the only difference is the strap system?

I like the easyboots EXCEPT I can not canter in them. Had them fit three horses and within 10 feet one or both come off. If I am going on a nice walk they are fine, I drilled holes in the soles for water drainage (as they used to come off after going through water) and they seem to stay on.

Now the renegades, they used to come off, but then I looked on the website and the young lady that sells them here had them adjusted wrong, she had it set to where the heel bulb cover didn’t come over the heel bulb, I wondered about that since it seemed made to go higher. She adjusted them for me and we went on a trail ride, through mud and in the creek and in wet sand (over the top of the boot) cantered and he crowhopped and went sideways and was HOT HOT HOT and they stayed on this time!

My only issue now with the renegades is the fit is exact, and if he is at 4-6 weeks in his trim they WILL NOT fit him. And where the easyboots fit three horses here the renegades now only fit Nate, and it has to be after a trim. Also the renegades are much much easier to put on and REMOVE than the easyboots, and there are no “teeth” in the renegades to bite the sidewall. I know they have a plate you can put over it or you can mash them with pliers but then what holds them on?

I also have a pair of Cavalli’s (SPELL??) that I love love love! They NEVER come off, water drains right out, easiest on and off of them all, but they do rub BUT they sell the pasturn wraps and with those there are no rubs. Personally they are my favorite.

Oh! Another boarder has renegades and his overstepped and tore off one boot and ripped it, renegade fixed it no charge within a few weeks. But those boots keep coming off so they are getting Cavalla’s and selling the renegades.

Is it possible that your easyboots are the wrong size? i know endurance riders use Easyboots and they are not supposed to come off at the canter. Could your horses feet have changed since you first bought them? i have old Mac G2’s and i am Not happy with how they rub even with gaters, and i’m not happy with the clunkyness of them. So i do not think i would be happy with a Simple boot. I need something that is not over the coronet.

I am new to boots and just got (and sent back) the Cavallos. They are just so clunky and heavy. Maybe all boots are? I’ve been looking at the Edge and have been very interested in this thread. The renegades are too much $$ (I’m not planning on using boots that long) and look somewhat complicated.

Anybody weigh the different boots to compare?

I haven’t used the renegades but know several folks who do who love them, never had rubs.

i’ve used the epic bares and can’t get them to NOT rub:no: regular easyboots don’t stay on him.

Wow, i’m feeling very conflicted now. But since my horse is just starting his transition to barefoot, i know his feet will change shape a bit. so i might be better off with the Edge boots. I just don’t know.

I have not tried the Epics, but LOVE the Renegades. I use them for three horses (2 Arabs and a TWH), and have not found the fit to be tricky at all.

Mine have held up well and we’ve ridden through mud, rocks, etc. I like the Renegades because they’re easy to put on/take off and have never rubbed, even when straight out of the box. They do ship extra straps, but I’ve never had to use one.

Prior to the Renegades I had the Old Macs. I liked those, but they were a pain to get on/off, and my Arab needed the gaiters every time or he’d rub.

Have the renegades ever come off while you were on a ride? I ride thru Knee deep streams. is this an issue at all?

I made my decision. i ordered the Easyboot Edge. I got 4, plus medium pads and studs for all.

I tried to ride him today in his old Mac G2’s with gators, but his hind were hurting him and he was not happy. The Old Macs are so heavy and clunky. I HOpe the Easyboot Edge boots will be better for my poor fellow. I took measurements 2x, b/c i did not trust myself, and they were not the same at all, but i figured it out. the Size 0 should be right.

Nezzy - the only time I’ve ever had the Renegades come off was when I first got them, I was hilltopping with our local hunt, and we went through some really muddy (almost knee deep) footing. I didn’t have the tension strap tight enough, and they did slide around on his hoof and I had to take them off. However, once I fixed that I went back through the same footing with no issues. The Renegade design seems really good with the tension strap and the heel captivator.

Good luck with the Edges - you’ll have to let us know how they work out for you.

Thanks!

If Easyboots are flying off at the canter, then they don’t fit the horse. You have to try a different size, or a different style of boot. Not every type of boot is a good fit for every horse.

And someone above said the only difference in Epics and Edge are the clamp system. That’s not correct. There is anothe HUGE difference, and that is the tread! The Edge have a lot more traction.
