Y’know, after I posted that I Googled and found lots of writings that claim “rice kills pigeons” is a myth. So, perhaps my ex was setting out some poison on the rooftops and claiming it was just rice. That seems entirely likely, actually. I had come to massively doubt his veracity by the time I divorced him. It wouldn’t surprise me that he lied about the pigeons along with much other stuff.
Well mine did end up eating all the rice as well as polishing off the kibble last night and are happily cooing and strutting around like they own the place. I asked my son to get a pellet gun and just take his time when here on the weekend. I’ll keep you posted on that one.
UPDATE:
Can’t believe these 2 are 7 1/2 months old!! Calliby & Rufus are not good for getting pictures taken anymore ( too busy doing young cat things) but I climbed up into the hay and got a passible one
They look great! Thank you for the picture!
Yet another kitten litter suffers in the care of a COTHer🙄
( They look happy and content!)
1 Year UPDATE 6/19/23
Since it was just a year ago that I found the kittens I thought I would give a little update.
I have never had cats disappear like these guys do. I have no idea what they can do for a week but whatever it is they do it. Silo and Calliby especially and boy do they come home lean.
They do sleep up at the top of the silo and I am not climbing up the wall to see who might be home but I can go a week without getting my hands or eyes on them and then one day everyone is waiting for breakfast , hugs, love and petting
The 2 kittens ( Thomas & Jenny ) I re-homed to the vet receptionists mom have a new home with her 5 year old niece( and family) since her moms passing. They are 95% full time house cats being adored and loved by the little girl. They found a good place and I am glad.
Mine don’t look any different , just thinner and I wasn’t able to get a Silo or Calliby picture but here is Barn Kitty & Rufus.
Sometimes I think my one is too thin but in reality he is probably at a good weight. The others are just fat.
I know. Silo especially shows it in his face and compared to what he was like, he is about 1/2 the size but he is a young , active barn cat. My house cats were too plump and I have to remember the difference between the 2 ways of living.
BK was way too fat and she actually looks good now
I really thought I had lost Calliby to either some misfortune or after being caught in my live trap she decided to move on. I saw no sign of her for a good month. I was resigned to now being a 3 cat family when I went up to feed one morning and there she was
I scooped her up and she purred madly. She looked good too. I guess she was coming in when I wasn’t there. Cats sure make things difficult sometimes. She has been home ever since.
I am sure that won’t last…
Sad update today.
Rufus was MIA for a couple of days. He is really my homebody so I was a little concerned when he wasn’t waiting for me on morning 3 when I came up to feed the cats.
Wednesday evening he was home but something was horribly wrong. I couldn’t even get near him but it looked like his throat was swollen. I got too close and he ran off.
I looked for him on Thursday but no luck. Thursday night he was back and allowed me to get close to him . it looked like the swelling was less so I hoped maybe he would be ok. He still was not himself.
This morning he was in obvious discomfort. I got him to the vet as they opened. Only 1 vet on duty and he had surgeries all day but they would get him looked as between surgeries and call me.
Got a call-- missed it and called back and it seems he tried to eat something that was too big? I couldn’t talk to the vet ( back in surgery) but it was bad and they euthanized him on the spot.
I adored Rufus He was always waiting for me and when I reached down to pet his back , he literally leapt into my hand. I am glad he isn’t suffering. I will go in on Monday to pay the bill and hopefully get more answers.
A few of my favorite pictures of my special boy. RIP Rufus.
I am so sorry! He was a cute little boy. Thank you for sharing your journey with us even with this sad news.

Oh that’s so sad. He was a cute kitten and a handsome young boy. I’m so sorry he is gone. Glad he is not suffering any longer. I loved your stories about him and his little family.
Oh, how tragic. Deepest sympathies on the loss of Rufus. Thank you for getting him to the vet so he could be assessed and given the care he needed even if it wasn’t the outcome any of us would have preferred.
Oh, so sorry. He was adorable. Thanks for taking care of him
