RF Amber Eyes -- Now known as "Commentary"
It actually is a common practice where I live for reputable trainers. I see it way more with the hunters. I never see it with the jumpers. This is mostly done so the trainer has the harder rides and then the kid has the “quiet” rides.
Where on earth do you live?

Oh hey, just chiming in here with my first hand experience as someone who shows in the High Performance Hunter division (and was successful in the juniors as well). A few clarifications for you…

My trainer hasn’t ridden my horse in 3 years. I have never seen a horse show in 5+ hunter rounds per day at that calibre of competition (I’m excluding the packer that does the 2’3 and the 2’6 division at a one day show, yada yada). If they did, people would make note of it. Regardless, there is no way that a horse showing at the 3’6+ level would be eligible for that many classes. It’s just not possible and you’re grossly exaggerating.

Never in my life have I shown in 5+ classes a day, let alone more than probably 3. Again, please show me a multi-day schedule that allows for someone to show, in one day, in 5 3’6 hunter classes that they are eligible for on the same horse. It doesn’t exist.

My horse has never had Robaxin in her system. My horse has never had Dexamethasone for a reason other than to cure an ailment and never at a show. I also don’t own a lunge line.
They never gave bute because the bute makes them feel “good”. They are trying to make them ride slow and dead.
My horse has had bute, in legal amounts, when necessary. I like when my horse feels good.
I have been to multiple A-circuit barns and the prep is almost exactly the same.
Um, clearly you haven’t. The barn I ride at consistently turns out top-quality horses and we have never used the style you mention above. Neither have my acquaintances that compete at the same level. I don’t know anyone who uses this style and I know quite a few top-level hunter trainers.
Almost all of them do this with the hunters and honestly do not care if the horse can’t be ridden after age 12.
My horse is 12 right now and barring any injury or otherwise (knock on wood), I’m planning on spending at least a few more years at this level.

Already addressed that. I’m sorry that you witnessed such poor treatment wherever you were, but please do not make such broad blanket statements about our discipline. Yes, there are offenders and bad trainers and abuse out there, but don’t act like it’s the rule for our sport. It’s the exception.

You say this like it’s a point of pride.

I’m scratching my head, wondering what kind of horse person doesn’t own a lunge line, especially if you have enough income to show. It does come in handy when you need to assess soundness on a circle.

I have two longe lines*…do I get a prize?

I’m sure goodlife’s barn has a longe line if her horse needs to be assessed for lameness.

*I have two because my old one is too short to go over the poll and still have a decent sized circle. Since my new horse refers to warm up her cold, sensitive back on the longe, I got a longer line (and it’s in my colors…yippee) so the circle larger and therefore, hopefully not as hard on her legs.

Seriously? You’re intentionally missing my point. I have access to a lunge line if I need one. My POINT was that my horse does not require 2 hours of lunging in order to be quiet enough to show. In fact, she requires no lunging and instead of running her into the ground on a circle, I just take her for an old fashioned hack in the morning. So yes, I do take a bit of pride in that.

If she’s a bit up in my first class of the show, I just take it in stride (ha, a pun) rather than put her on the line for a few more hours.

I have access to a lunge line if I need one in that sort of situation that you described above.

AA trainers I have been with where I have lived would be considered disreputable with show schedule, LTD and pound to the ground prep practices (except a few schooling rides by the Pro, nothing wrong with that) and meds. Show bills could be that high in some areas though, even without any meds charges.

Maybe you need to spend more time hanging around Jumpers. Assuming nothing ever goes on there just because you don’t see it is as bad as assuming EVERYBODY treats their Hunters the same way because that seems to be the only way barns you have been in operate. Maybe pick better barns to ride a Hunter in.

Yes. Your prize will be a sense of humor. You do seem to need one.

In the cases of horses that do ‘require’ lots of lunging, I suspect that many of those owners don’t own a lunge line either, as it is the trainer or the trainer’s minions that do the lunging.

As do you.

And if you need an alter to say that, you are desperately in need of a spine.

I know - I wasn’t disputing whether lunge line ownership could be equated to proper horse show prep; sorry if it came across that way. I was trying to respond to PonyGirl15’s claim that every high level hunter is lunged into the ground and drugged up to its eyeballs.

Okay, who’s been snacking on the Meow Mix?

I have a spine, thank you very much. This is not an alter, this is the name I have been posting under for a few years. If Amber Eyes can use a new name, so can I.

Folks, honestly it isn’t the “high” level hunters that are suffering. It is the 3’ children’s horses that are expected to pack toothpick size kids around at every show and tolerate their ignorance. The 2’6-3’ division horses are the ones that the grooms will be chasing around on a lunge all morning. Maybe some wannabe junior hunters and eq horses, too. BUT. Do you really think that horses like Inclusive, Ovation, and Commentary are lunged, drugged, shown in every division, etc.? I don’t. They wouldn’t still be around.

In almost any horse sport, the ones on top are generally doing “right”. The bad ones are the people that want to be on top but don’t want to put forth the time to get there the honest way. The majority of those types don’t make it in the end, despite the number of horses they ruin in their quest.

^^^ spewed Chardonnay all over my keyboard… I must remember this and use as appropriate…

this has turned into the dumbest fooking thread around. I came back on today to hopefully read something awesome.

all I get is a dumb @$$ cat fight about stupid lunge/longe/lounge [hehehe] lines?
geez guys. I don’t even have job but I have more of a life.

good grief.

There was a suggestion to bump the Amber Eyes thread in another convo over in HJ land. Bumping this one too.

People were having difficulty keeping track of all of the problems this pair has encountered

This!!! Ticks With Legs!!! Perfect~ Amber eyes looks perfect! Why are so many of those hunters so obese? I have always wondered. Talk about potential soundness and health issues. Ugh.
