Thank you for posting this article. In reading it, I can really understand from a first hand perspective how much we blame victims (even to some degree subconsciously), especially regarding sexual misconduct/assault situations on an even greater level. We view them as complicit in the situation or we view that they put themselves in that situation. The one thing that I now find myself talking to so many people about when it comes to feeling the blame and addressing the victim blaming is to modify how we look at sexual misconduct/sexual assault. There is so much victim blaming and guilt that the events and how they are viewed stay so hidden, which is so destructive. When in reality we should be looking at it as something akin to a carjacking. If you are driving through a not so great neighborhood to pick up a friend and you get car jacked is it your fault? What if you are parked at the barn and you get car jacked there, what about at a horse show? It is never the personâs getting car jacked âfaultâ. Even if they didnât have their doors locked when they were driving, even if it was at night, regardless, it is never the person who got car jacked âfaultâ. Same case with sexual misconduct/sexual assault. We need to start thinking about it differently. We need to start recognizing what it is. Especially in our sport. We need to open these discussions and recognize the overarching attitudes that we need to address and to some degree we all really need to pause and think about how we view these situations.
Sounds like Shelley got two more years added to her suspension according to the USEF website, although it still says subject to appeal.
I really dislike that non-members cannot access USEF violations section. It is a handy source for checking out barns and trainers
Agreed. Can you access with a fan membership? Also, I believe you can access this information on the safesport website also
not sure about fan member access. The access goes beyond SS however. It is good that SS in open resource
They appear to be visible w/ fan membership.
I can access the Safe Sport list on the USEF website without logging in, so it must be visible to non-members.
Are you referring to USEF suspensions that are not safe sport related?
yes suspensions and penalties in general.
I know and access the safe sport site for its particular need
Jeff Campf victim just stepped forward. Itâs posted on the Horse Network on Facebook.
have they filed with safe sport or other authorities?
No idea. I have only heard rumors but nothing official.
Thereâs nothing about JC on HN. Shelley got slapped by Safesport again, for retaliation and attempting to sabotage the ongoing investigation into the Fellers family and their activities.
There is a video on their FB page posted yesterday. If you know the victim you can easily find it.
"You are not alone. #weridetogether
Full video drops Wednesday."
Wow. This is big news about another survivor stepping forward. I will say a prayer for her, in hopes that she experiences an outpouring of support in the coming days, and that parts of the sporting community do not revert to old habits, and more victim blaming.
Hope that we will see some sort of SafeSport action in the wake of it.
Sometimes itâs better not to appeal.
It seems like she chose to get an appeal, did some no-no after her husband was arrested, and then got her ass handed to her by the arbitrator because she couldnât control herself. That being said, I doubt she seriously thought that she would actually get something good from it, unless she genuinely hoped to convince the arbitrator that she was nothing more than an innocent bystander, which seems to be an impossibility. Especially since itâs been said there were multiple victims over the years she was married to him, which means any appeal on her part would ultimately lead to more punishment, if that was taken into account.
Kristin Medall Simpson-Ferguson Hardin has added a testimonial to the We Ride Together site as well. Really powerful. Sheâs consistently been a strong voice supporting women who have come forward.
If you are in the PWN you know that the rider coming forward is a victim of Jeff Campfâs. Iâm really glad she finally feels like she can come forward. Honestly just even seeing the Campfâs at shows disgusted me back in the day and I canât imagine how she coped being on the same circuit as them for so long
Thanks for that explanation. I was wondering how an appeal could actually end up with someone getting a longer suspension. But adding in consideration of activities she did after her original suspension makes sense.
Do not read the survivor stories on the website unless youâre in an emotionally good place. And have tissues nearby.
I am sitting over my morning coffee struggling to control my tears.
The stories are different but the dynamic between the abuser and victims is scarily, awfully the same.
