RID/ 1/2 RID stallions for TB mare? Now talking individual stallions

Hi all!

I have a gorgeous TB mare that I love, love, love. And I love the TB’s with my heart and soul. But I am having a hard time finding a classic, substantial, heavy hunter sort of TB stallion.

I am thinking about going with a crossbred. I am looking for a fun, athletic, all around horse. A good mover, a good jumper, goes forward, smart. Like my mare.

What I want to improve on her is substance, and soundness. She is quite sound herself, but I want one of those horses that would last through fox hunting for decades etc.

I am looking to have more fun in my future so I will probably be going to hunter paces, Judged pleasure rides, fox hunting, maybe some low eventing, and I want to do more sidesaddle riding.

So tell me about these crosses, and recommend stallions please!

I don’t know of anyone purpose breeding Hackney Horse/Thoroughbred crosses. Do you maybe mean Cleveland Bays?

There are some people crossing Hackney Horses and Clydesdales for driving horses.

Hackney Horses are not a heavy breed compared to Cleveland Bays or Irish Draughts and are primarily driving horses.

You may also want to consider a Gelders stallion http://kwpn-na.org/stallions/

Look at several RID stallions and their offspring. We are big fans of RIDs and IDSHs. The RID/TB cross is a common cross. There are some very nice RID stallions in the US. My daughter has an IDSH from Playland Farm in Maryland. Their stallion, Diamond, has produced a lot of nice, amateur friendly, athletic and versatile horses. Glenda can show you some of the offspring so you can see how the cross usually turns out.

Love Dandelion Diamond Rebel. He is a Master’s horse and produces wonderful temperaments with substance. Also like KEC Double Diamond. There are number of nice RID stallions that could be a nice cross with your mare.

Flagmount Freedom is a nice ISH model producing very talented offspring.

I agree with Horsetales. Dandelion Diamond Rebel has produced some nice horses.

I know someone who has some hackney horses here that no one can ever quite figure out what they are. They are fabulous dressage horses. Very nice.

THIS IS NOT A SALES AD

I have several RID x’s. Right now the best looking of the bunch is by Bridon Belfrey
http://www.benmarfarm.com/irishdraughtstallionbridonbelfrey.html out of my Hideaway’s Erin Go Bragh mare

He is by the late Snowford Bellman who is one of the most influential RID sires in the country. King of Diamonds was also a great sire and I would happily breed a mare to KEC Double Diamond.

DDR is a gray and I try to avoid them but that is just personal prejudice. He was at the IDHSNA show when I presented Sophie for approval…he was such a laid back stallion, snoozing in his stall.

I am thinking of breeding a 3/4 Conn mare to http://irishdraught.com/horses/profile.php?unid=6464

Thanks guys. I am checking all the recommendations out. I’m not a huge fan of gray horses either, though I saw a few RID on the stallion register that might make me change my mind.

I have seen a couple of hackney horse crosses that I quite liked, but I guess no one here has one?

What about the “go” button on a 1/2 RID? I really hate a horse I have to drive forward. I like one that goes.

I certainly have no problem motivating Sophie

We are breeding some pure TB sport horses, but mostly Irish Sport Horses. Our TB’s are known for their great minds and temperaments, but the ISH’s are even sweeter with athletic ability and “quiet engines”. No slugs here, but sanely forward. The Hackney’s are note known for their riding skills and the only one I ever owned was gorgeous but HOT!! We are focusing on 3/4 TB or 7/8 TB, ISH’s. One 2014, 7/8 TB colt will mature over 17 hands, but has the temperament of a Beagle puppy. RID or even IDSH is the direction I’d be looking for in your position. They are great all around horses…and good movers!!

Carol, if you breed your Connemara to PL Diamond Hill, let us know if the offspring is for sale. Diamond is a lovely stallion (as are many other RIDs). Diamond seems to pass along his good temperament and athleticism. The Connemara/ID crosses we have seen have been very athletic and nice. I love my full ID who is by Glenlara. He is a bit more laid back than the ID crosses but has plenty of get up and go for me. My daughters like the 1/2 IDs as they like to gallop. My horse will gallop but is happiest at a more leisurely pace.

My ISH is pretty lazy and behind the leg most of the time. I think he has only “taken” me to the base of a jump with out serious encouragement one time. I always felt like I was needing to push him, or drive him. Of course they are all different and I wouldn’t stereotype all ISH to be the same. Just my .02

My primary mare is a RIDSH by Bellman. Sturdy and forward yet extremely tolerant with a great mind. Can’t say enough about her (Jingles she gets in foal to my Banks fee Daniel frozen next year :o)

Also have an imported 3/4 TB ISH gelding trained as a foxhunter with Belle Meade. He’s 20 and sound as can be even after a drastic rescue situation. Wonderful bone and flawless temperament. Calm, yet goes with a purpose when asked. If I’d let him, he’s probably still own it at 1st flight lol. Can’t say enough about proper Irish blood.

I know they hopped the pond, but I can’t write without mentioning Tony and Sarah’s program if you’re open to frozen… http://www.belltowerstud.com/

Most of the 1/2 have had a good go along with a good whoa. Especially if your mare has a good engine. If you definitely want to keep a hotter engine, can look to the ISH like Flagmount Freedom

You could go with a nice Connemara stallion who isn’t grey. Depends on the size of your mare…I went this way:

I’m seriously considering it. She is 3/4 Connemara by *Gunsmoke out of my Hideaway’s Erin Go Bragh mare Lotty. Size is a consideration as this would be her first foal and Diamond is smaller than some. I would breed her to Fergal but I don’t want to try frozen on a maiden.

She has a bit of ponytude (pasture boss)which I prefer to minimize. Her half sister is the Belfrey filly I mentioned above and I would consider breeding her to Belfrey but not as a first foal.

So, on to the stallions… The first round of short list is Corcullen, Bridon Belfrey, and Banks Fee Daniel. Anyone have any thoughts on these horses?

I want a forward going, good moving horse with some substance. I appreciate your help!

I would also check out Bridon Beale Street and KEC Double Diamond (The same farm that is standing Belfrey for the owner owns KEC DD and I can’t say enough good things about them and I’ve used both stallions).

Flagmount Freedom … seriously look up his page on Facebook, lots of pics of his offspring. I know a few personally and they are fun, ammy friendly, athletic horses, winning their divisions. Not push rides. Plus the foal would be 3/4 TB so plenty of blood there.

Bridon Beale Street also has a Facebook page with lots of photos/videos of him eventing. He is cute as a button. I wouldn’t hesitate to breed him to the right mare; I’ve just got others that I like a bit better. He’s built like a tank.

I’m breeding my TB mare next year for similar reasons as you (but more eventing, less hunting, although I do some). I also like a forward “take me there” ride. My top pics are Roc USA, Bon Balou and Flagmount Freedom.

Good luck with yours, let us know who you choose!
