Riderless Horses and Horseless Riders--matchmaking service!
Wanted to get some feedback on a half-lease…

I’ve never leased before (always owned my own horse) but am coming back to riding as an adult and want to lease for awhile before purchasing again. I know every agreement is probably different, but I’m looking at a potential half-lease right now. 16 year OTTB, eventer. I’m just looking to do jumpers and some dressage, and I think he’d be great and I feel comfortable with him, a huge plus.

If I’m half-leasing though, should I be expected to pay ALL of the farrier and vet bills? Shouldn’t that be split?

Thanks!
Ideally, it would be split between you and whoever else is riding him…but not much about the $$ end of horses is ever ideal. Depends on the situation, and how you want to look at the terms.

When I had Laddie leased out, that money was used to pay for his farrier/feed/etc, so technically the leaser was responsible for all of those things, but indirectly. What I did with the money was my business. If for a half lease you’re being asked to pay for those things in full ontop of what the monthly lease fee is, I’d feel slightly put out. You only get ‘half’ the horse, why should you be responsible for all of it? (Excluding unexpected vet bills directly resulting from something you did, which we all hope will never happen but it does sometimes)

It also comes down to how much you’re willing to spend to be able to lease that particular horse. Honestly if I could find someone to lease one of the horses here and have them cover all the expenses but I still had access to the horses myself around the leaser’s riding schedule, I’d think I’d died and gone to heaven.

That’s a good point…if the vet or farrier bill is a direct result of something you did or didn’t do, you should be responsible. Routine stuff or bills that were no one’s fault (horse runs through a fence, etc) should be split.

Riderless Fjord Mare in northern CA

7 year old fjord mare, 13.3 hands and stoutly built. Needs a job while I have my knee replaced and rehab for the next 6 months. She is broke to ride and rides in a snaffle but needs more miles out on the trails and fine tuning of her gaits. She is barefoot and sound, very easy keeper, ties and trailers well and gets along well with other horses.

I’m open to an offsite lease as long as the person leasing her insures her and covers her expenses. She is located near Ukiah, CA which is about 3 hours north of San Francisco and 3 hours west of Sacramento.

PM me for more information.

Horseless Rider in San Deigo, CA

Horseless rider in San Diego, CA. Recently had to sell my horse due to finances and the much higher living cost of relocating to San Diego. I am an experienced rider, with several years experience as an assistant trainer as well as experience bringing along babies. I would be happy to get any saddle time. Most of my experience is hunter/jumper/eq although I also have eventing experience and some western. Willing to drive up to an hour. Thanks!

Horseless Rider in Baltimore

My husband just started an eight month fellowship here in Baltimore. So I am now here and horseless for the next eight months. I have been riding for over twenty years and showed all the way up through the top ranks of the AA junior hunters. Over the past decade I have bought a few investment horses and all have sold for double what I paid. In short, I won’t ruin your horse, hopefully, I can improve it. I would also love to meet fellow riders in the area. A SAFE horse is a must but I don’t mind a project.

Horseless rider in Summerfield, FL (south of Ocala)

My family and I recently relocated here to Summerfield, FL after he received a great job offer in the area. But I miss the horses, and can’t afford my own at the moment. I’m primarily a hunter/jumper rider, but can school basic dressage. Lots of experience in equine reproduction and working with young horses. Small enough at 5’4 125lbs to ride ponies (larges & mediums). Would love to find a horse/pony in need of some extra rides locally. Right now available on the weekends, but hoping to secure a part-time office position during the week soon, which would give me availability during the afternoons as well. PM me if interested. I’ve got links to riding videos, so you can see for yourself before you allow me on your horse!

Daisy,
My DD is in Baltimore. her horse is coming down at the end of the year. Look at your pm’s. for a phone number.
good luck

Horseless Rider

I’m 14 and I live in West TN (Germantown/Memphis, TN area). I’m looking for a hunter, jumper, or equitation, or even eventing type ride. I can handle hot horses and greenies. I can ride bigger bodied mediums and large ponies, and also any size horse. I’m 5’5" and about 120lbs. I’ve jumped 3’3", and I’m open to any sort of ride you can give me! Exercise, showing, etc.! Anything! Please PM me.

Horseless Rider, Triangle Area, NC

Horseless rider in Chapel Hill, NC. Willing to drive nearly anywhere. I’m 23, been riding HJ since I was 5. Very successful junior rider on AA circuit, but went to college and now am poor college grad looking for any riding opportunities! Will also be glad to help clean stalls, feed, really whatever needs to be done.

Generally in a half lease type of arrangement farrier, vet and board is split 50/50. Sometimes owners will only charge 50% of board and farrier and take care of vet themselves if it’s just routine shots, teeth etc… I know when I was half leasing awhile back that’s what I did.

Horseless Rider South Shore Mass/RI

Hi everyone,

I recently sold my horse, and I am desperately looking for a horse that needs some extra care and riding time, as I cannot afford a lease right now, and I need time to keep in shape between lessons. I have been riding for about 20 years (27 now,) mostly in dressage, (trained my last horse to 2nd level) but I did some hunter/jumpers in the past. I have experience with all types of horses, including greenies and OTTBs. I am very small, so I definitely can fit on ponies. I will love and ride any horse; the only thing I ask is that the horse is safe. I have no problem with energy or a forward horse, so long as the safety part is there. (Not as resilient or fearless as I used to be!) I am definitely an experienced horseperson, and while a dressage horse is preferable, I love riding any horse. If you can help, I’d love that! Thanks so much!

Horseless rider in N. Centeral Ohio

Have about 20yrs under belt . Have had to take some time off due to children, health ( which is all good right now).

I have ridden dressage and hunters. Willing to do either but would pefer dressage type until I get my balance and ability back.

Thanks.

Horseless Rider near St. Louis/in St. Charles County

I was very excited to find this thread, and hope I can find a mutually satisfying arrangement! I’m a life-long H/J rider (with about 10 years off in the middle for kids). Sadly, I’ve never owned my own horse, but have lessoned and shown lower-rated as much as possible (3’6" as a kid, 2’-2’6" more recently). I’m told I have a good seat and very nice hands. Despite having ridden for so many years, because of my of not having my own horse I’d call myself Intermediate.

I’m comfortable with a variety of breeds and sizes; in my last lesson program I was swapping between a large pony and an 18hh Percheron. I’m 5’6"/125 lbs. so ok on ponies (and I like them). Lately I’ve been lightly flatting and trail riding a friend’s (huge WB) former dressage horse, but that isn’t a steady thing and I’m dying for more saddle time.

Any breed is fine. TBs are my favorite but I’ll be honest, I haven’t ever done any training so something right off the track probably will not work, unless blessed with an extremely steady temperament. Ideally, I would love to help you by exercising your old campaigner, or putting mileage on something younger but steady and SAFE. I don’t bounce as well as I used to and my family/employers kind of need me intact! Now that winter is coming a covered arena would be great but it’s not a deal-breaker.

I am available one or two days a week so I’m not looking for anything intensive time-wise. Activity level, either: my fitness level is not conducive to hours of trotting so no worries about a lathered-up, pooped horse. I can promise you that any time I’d spend with your horse, s/he would be groomed and loved on and cared for to the best of my ability (and I’m not shy about asking questions if there’s something I don’t know). I read horse publications (inc. health-related, eg The Horse) obsessively, so I do have a lot of “book-learnin” rattling around.

I am located in western St. Charles County and willing to drive up to a half hour away. An at least partially-stalled horse would be best, BUT if your horse is boarded, please make sure that the BO is ok with someone else riding. I had one arrangement like this in the past that was going great until the BO suddenly decided it wasn’t ok (I was terribly sad, as I was just beginning to build a really good relationship with the horse, a difficult and moody TB mare).

Other small details: I have my own medium-tree saddle/gear, wear a helmet religiously, get along well with others in a barn setting and try hard to please. If any liability-release type of document needs to be signed that is fine.

I hope to hear from someone (PM me), and in the meantime, Happy Thanksgiving!

Horseless in WA–south Snohomish County, WA (everett/north seattle area)

I rode hunters for years and years (after doing Pony Club/eventing). Took a break for college, kids, husband. Been back taking lessons for about 3 months. Looking for a horse to ride mostly for additional practice. I don’t have tons of time, so maybe even 1x a week as I want to continue taking lessons! I am becoming a pretty confident rider again, jumping 2’6" ish. Even a horse to practice ground work on would be great!!

Message me if I might fit what you are looking for

Thanks!!

Looking For Rider – Located in Middleburg, VA

Hello, I’m looking for a competent, experienced person to bring my preliminary event horse back into work. He got injured last year and has been sitting out in the field for some time. I will be gone in Florida this winter and ideally would need someone to do a month of walking (there are miles and miles of beautiful trails on the farm) and then begin to bring back into full work so he’s ready to go when I get back. I am willing to pay someone to leg him up. He’s a lovely steady irish type with absolutely no buck/spin/spook/rear. You can hack him on a loose rein, and he won’t bat an eye.

Rider needs to be very good, no beginners/intermediate riders please! I’d like this horse to be jumping by the time I get back from Florida so person must be a good jump rider as well.

Anyone interested please send me a paragraph about you and a video of your riding.

Thanks!

Horseless Rider - VA

Hi. I am looking for a confident builder all around horse for off site free lease or lease w/ option to own. I’m an adult rider and prefer the horse to be 15-16.2h. I would carry insurance and will be working with a trainer.

Will also consider an on site lease within 30 miles of Dale City, VA.

Riderless Horse in MD

I have a 3 yr old TB gelding that came off the track a few months ago that I just dont have the time to work with because I have too many green horses. He will obviously need an experienced rider because of his age and lack of training. He is sweet and has a good temperment on the ground. If anyone is looking to work with a greenie, let me know. He is located in Burtonsville, MD (in between silver spring and columbia). I would also be willing to give him away for free if he stays at current farm.

Looking for rider in Snohomish, WA

Green OTTB needs more exercise then mommy can manage. He is a good boy, no rear/buck. He can be a little honory on the ground. There is only an outdoor arena where he is. If I found a half-lease I would be more than happy to move him to a mutually agreed apon facility with better winter amenities.

He is ridden hunt seat right now and I can provide all the tack necessary. I would be pleased with a dressage rider with their own saddle as well. He is steady walk/trot, has his canter departs down but still working on maintaining a quality canter. He moves off your leg and is working on bending. He is a good boy but consistency has been spotty.

**he LOVES trails and I would be more than happy to find him a trail buddy. He would rather be out cruising the trails then working in the arena. I would be willing to move him to Lord Hill, Tolt, centennial or even bridle trails. He also trailers but I do not own one.

If anyone is interested please let me know!!

OTTB rider in Central NJ (Hunterdon County)

Experienced with OTTBs and greenies, looking for exactly what Buglet and Snohomish (sp?) have described in the two posts above…unfortunately I’m nowhere near!

If you’re an OTTB mommy ( or daddy!) around Central NJ with too much on your plate in terms of work, kids, school, whatever, I’m looking for just this kind of situation.

I’m a kind, sensitive rider with light hands and an independent seat. I train with Marilyn Payne when I can and welcome whatever other guidance I can get. I’d love to find someone else in the area who’s into OTTBs.

I’m small and light (5’3", 103 lbs) but in good shape and strong. I’m fine with occasional TB moments and other sillies, but I’m not looking for a rodeo ride.

Any thoughts/ideas welcome–feel free to PM me.

Oh, and if you have a made horse/pony that just needs more work, I’m up for that too!
