No matter how a person feels about Edward Gal and Toto’s history, he was a magnificent horse. Such a sad loss.

Totilas’ great presence and charisma reached people I know who knew little about dressage. Godspeed, Totilas.

Sad to lose such a beautiful horse.

Yes, it is a sad story. I saw a video of Gal riding Toto in a warm-up and it was so beautiful. He was relaxed, stretching, and absolutely breath-taking. He didn’t ever get back to being that horse.

With the link…the entire saga was it’s own sh#t show, wasn’t it?

I am afraid this will start a nightmare thread, but Isabelle Werth on Totilas

What a gorgeous horse. And the movement. Stunning. I had several pics of him as my screensavers.
RIP beautiful boy.

Tasteless.

Totilas was a memorable horse who created a truly unique buzz. His lines live on in many very talented horses. I cannot imagine the pain that those who knew and loved him are experiencing. No matter the time we have it is never enough for the people left behind. I don’t think that is any less true just because a horse is famous.

I meant that the entire story is sad, and many, in particular those who knew him, were rightfully upset with how his career panned out. Not because he was famous, or because he didn’t make millions in stud fees, but because it was sad for the horse, and for the loss of a great talent that can’t be replicated.

A highlight of my life was standing on the rail of the make up arena at WEG 2010 watching Edward Gal warm up Totilas for the afternoon GP. He was not just magnificent, he had the “lets go to work” attitude of a seasoned cow pony doing a job. He appeared to enjoy his work, unlike many of the other horses I saw warming up. that afternoon.

I think any discussion of Totilas should include the tragedy of his life as well. As usual Horse Magazine has the best POV on the subject in my view.

I thought that her statements were in poor taste (some things are fine to think, but need to be kept to yourself.) That article was written almost a year ago, well before the stallion’s death.

Why was he sold in the first place?

I’m glad you posted that link. Thank you.
When I was reading the article you linked, and Isabel Werth’s words, I suddenly thought of Hamlet’s words about his father the king, who had died tragically. A paraphrase:
“He was a horse, take him for all in all. We shall not look upon his like again.”
