Yes and no.

But most are just not that comfortable in longer stirrups because they also ride in shorter ones and their horses are more use to leg cues being higher.

A lot of dressage only riders have long legs (and spurs) that go past their horses’ sides and you won’t see knees in front of their pads.

It’s totally ok! It’s really hard to master both dressage and jumping, let alone going on the cross…

I’ve met Mark Todd and he is quite tall (the horse in the picture is 16h3) and yet, his knees don’t go in front of the flap.
Boyd’s wife is a GP dressage rider. I’m quite sure he is capable of riding as long as he wants to ride. On a narrow, narrow horse like this a long legged rider often needs to ride shorter.

What a strange comment to make. Many of these riders show the same horses at straight dressage shows at 4th+ level.

Sandy Phillips (Nee Pflueger born in Hawaii) was a member of the U.S. Olympic Dressage Team and rode in two World Championships. Her father; http://khon2.com/2014/10/15/pflueger-in-court-for-ka-loko-dam-sentencing/
I had no idea. I’ve always thought of her as a Brit because of CMP.

For the most part, if you have a very long femur you have to get saddles made to fit you properly. My riding buddy would need a size 20 seat to stop his knee shooting out the front, if he didn’t get a custom saddle. I can ride in a 17" seat because my saddle was made for me.

How is that even relevant?

I wasn’t adressing Boyd in particular, or at all for that matter but I’m well aware that he is a more than competent dressage rider.
Didn’t saw him with his knees in front of the saddle at all…

Blackfoot Mystery is 17h1 and far from being that narrow. Boyd Martin is 6’.

You think that’s not narrow?!? (compared to Blackfoot Mystery)

Anyway, I wasn’t adressing Boyd neither did Kwill.

I didn’t say ALL eventer sucked at dressage… I was commenting on the fact that SOME riders do shorten their stirrups and have their knees in front of their saddle’s flaps but I gave another valid reason than yours for doing so.

It’s not a strange comment at all… your attitude on the other hand…

Anyone watch the xc course preview video? My thoughts were:
There’s a LOT of water.
The coffin is very late in the course, but it looks friendlier than last year’s.

Link, please, to XC course preview.

Viney, I found it on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/RolexKentucky/videos/10154177990734640/

Interesting, US riders scored higher than average, with 73% US riders overall, with 80% in the top 10. Scores, on average this year are about 1%-2% lower, but last year, we did have 4 dressage scores under 40% (two of those were Jung, one Price, and one Fox-Pitt). Even with those scores, the average score for the top 10 is lower this year than last by around 1-2%.

I found Allison and Arthur’s test to be superb and I thought that the judges were not very generous. But the angle at which I watched it is certainly not as accurate as theirs… and, um, they know a lot more than I do.

Can’t wait until tomorrow. I have to figure out what time to ride so that I can watch all of it. That means getting up particularly early on a Saturday and riding in the semi-dark. Rushing back to the house… and doing chores during the break.

Just answered my own questions

X/C starts at 10:00 and ride times can be found here:

[3rd edit — maybe I have it right this time]

Does anyone have a link to ride times for tomorrow? And what time does x/c start? thx.
Starts at 10:00.

While I appreciate all the video and fence-by-fence still shots of the x-country course, I still want to see a MAP. Waaahhh!!

Fences 12, 14, and 24 look like the most challenging ones to me.

Of course, what do I know.

One of the problems in looking at year to year dressage score comparisons is that they will vary quite a bit depending on who is on the ground jury. You know from the start, for example, that Angela Tucker, if she is on the jury, will score low. Some judges are more forgivng. In order to really evaluate how well the riders are doing, you have to have some background on how each judge traditionally scores dressage.

Your “valid reason” was “they can’t ride properly because riding is hard.” About 4" riders.

The original critical post referenced Boyd.

Reading is also apparently hard.

There is no lunch break today.

Just to clarify my position on the stirrup length, I assume they know what they are doing and all of them could buy a custom saddle if they wanted one. I was just curious because they are at the top of the sport and know what they are doing, so there must be a logical explanation.

On the other hand, it occurs to me that they might be fitting the horse to the saddle, not themselves, and you can’t buy custom saddles for each horse in your string…

Just watched – a LOT of water, and it’s pouring rain today. Going to be a mud-fest. Very excited to see some of these guys navigate this course which presents some interesting questions!
