Rope halters

Well I got my mare back from the vets. But I didn’t get my halter back, it seems they sent it home with some other mare. The admin gal blamed it on interns and was sorry…

But I REALLY, REALLY LIKED that halter. Not just because it was a gift, sort of a “horse warming gift” that a friend gave me when I got my mare, but also because it was a really nice halter. It was part of a Parelli video pack thing that my friend gave me. I’m not a Parelli person, but the halter was very nice and I was very fond of it and now someone else is enjoying it. {sigh}

So what is the closest halter to the Parelli? Like I said, I’m not a Parelli person, and don’t want to give him money.

What I really liked about it was that it was very strong; my mare played tug-o-war with in in a serious way one time and the halter won! I like that. It’s held up to whatever my gal tried to give it, and was sort of “drapy”, not so stiff like some of the cheaper ones, seemed very comfortable for her. And after a number of years, it seems to not show any wear.

I miss this halter already. What can I replace it with that will be the same without paying Pat anything or signing up to be on his mailing list?

I don’t have a basis of comparison vs. the Parelli product, but I like my KnottyGirlz rope halter a lot.

I was told the best ones out there are the “Clinton Anderson Be Nice” rope halter. I have a couple I’ve used for 15- years and they’re still as good as new. Stiffer than the cheap ones. Very effective too.

Sunset Halters in Washington state makes really nice rope halters. Great colors, quality materials.

They also have great customer service. When my friend’s horse sawed the halter cheekpiece in half…no marks on the horse, or the trailer where the horse was tied… they replaced the halter right away. We still can’t figure out quite what happened though there was definitely a latch on the trailer in the right place to have caught the cheekpiece, and sawed it through.

But the halters are made with that nice drapy rope, with some body to them. My yearling filly has one. I have no questions about their strength, and I will buy their halters and leads (also hard to find a really good quality lead) when I need new ones.

I think I have the 5/16"halter , but I’m not positive. It’s not too stiff, and not too floppy. It’s a bright orange with red and yellow… perfect color for a buckskin baby. And I won’t mistake it for one of my regular size horse halters.

Looks like Knotty Girlz has a 2-knot soft polyester halter. Based on the description on PP’s website, I believe that is close to what he sells.

If you like the softer rope halters, I also have a couple from Brent Graef https://www.brentgraef.com/shop/hors…halter/halter/ which have a really nice feel, especially paired with the treeline rope he also sells.

Not exclusively a rope halter but the parts that matter. I love not having to tie the damned knot. Works most excellently for ground work. Comes in leather or nylon.
The lovely model is my mare and her purple hybrid halter.

The Parelli-style halters don’t have knots on the nose. The Clinton Anderson ones have two extra knots on the nose, which might be a bit harsh. One of these halters came with my horse but I’ve never used it because I never had to.

I’ve had it for a good 5-6 years, and turns out the trainer used it as well (I didn’t mind at all!), but it is really soft now and I love love love it!

And that is why, when my horse leaves home for whatever reason and is not in my care (a really rare thing) the good halter stays home and I put an old one I don’t care bout on the horse.

I have a “Be Nice”, but it’s just left over from when she was learning. I don’t think anyone had really taught her how to stand tied, and the “Be Nice” was very handy for a while. There’s no way I’d use that for just every day.

I ALMOST bought one of these. The one with the cord described as good for “thin skinned, sensitive” horses fit my gal just right. The only reason I hesitated was that I wanted to email them and double check a couple things.

This one is my exact halter. I bought it. This one lets me tell my friend, “See? I’ve still got it! Thanks so much! Your gift was so great!” or something similar. It’s a small lie, but would be truth except for the vet interns. So I’ll go with that. He was a friend from work, and since he retired, I don’t see him so often. This will work.

And yeah… Whatever money Pat was going to get off that halter, he already has. So that works too.

It really is great that you could get the one you wanted that already had the “Parelli Tax” paid.
I would still follow up with the vet’s office and see if they can sort out the mistake.

No. They did give me ~a~ halter as a replacement, but It’s just not as nice as my old rope one. I guess it boils down to personal preference. And I don’t want to be “that person”. They helped me get my gal in foal, so i’m going to stay the happy camper I am… :winkgrin:

There couldn’t have been that many horses staying at the vets the time your mare was there? The people would also be fairly local? Why not get the numbers of the clients who went home in that time and find out who has your halter and get it back.

You wouldn’t be " that person". Most people would want their stuff back ( if it is nice) . The vet’s office is in error.

I would be pretty annoyed if my vet handed out my contact information to someone to call me to ask about returning a halter.

No problem if the vet called me and asked, but the vet giving out information is a for sure no.

I do agree that the vet’s office should work a little harder to see if they can get your halter back.
