While my motto is Friends Don’t Let Friends Use Amazon™️, and I suspect you can find Shires in a number of places, possibly for a few dollars more, your safety is the most important thing. Take good care.
The author of that article is fishing for a lawsuit, he has no interest in actually promoting safety in the sport other than to sensationalize the idea that somehow children are dying by the dozens because of safety stirrups.
Peacock stirrups and magnetic stirrups are not legal in USEF Dressage, according to DR 121 https://www.usef.org/
If you show in schooling shows that don’t follow USEF rules (or where the organizers aren’t familiar with USEF rules) riders may be allowed to use them. It’s always best to ask show management ahead of time.
Nothing to do with lawsuits or otherwise, just mentioning as it was not something I would have expected to see happen or haven ever given consideration to.
Saw a video on Instagram of a rider whose spur strap got caught on her safety stirrup, the safety stirrup had come open and her spur strap hung up on the small end on the bottom of the stirrup when the safety (side of the stirrup) opened up. Her spur strap was really hung up, it took someone helping her by unbuckling her spur strap to get her free of the stirrup. Stirrup looked similar to an Acavallo style safety stirrup, couldn’t tell a brand from the video. I assumed from the video it happened somehow when dismounting; however had it been a fall she would not have been able to get free from the stirrup.
Unfortunately, it seems like all tack is prone to accidents, no matter how much we try to safety proof them. Just yesterday I had such a near-miss: my horse turned her neck to bite at a fly, and the rein stop got hung up in the ring of the bit (snaffle). She started to freak out, and only by some miracle she didn’t rear up and flip over on me.
Literally no way I could have foreseen this coming, especially when the whole point of rein stops are to prevent the running martingale rings from doing that exact thing.
I was at a show once and while we were waiting in the area to go into the arena, we standing on asphalt. There was nowhere else to stand. A young horse reached around, maybe for a fly, not sure, to the rider’s stirrup area. She got her full-cheek snaffle stuck in the stirrup, and was freaking out circling, dancing, circling. The rider couldn’t stop her. Everyone was just standing there looking at them, including the trainer. My DH was able to get in there and calm the horse and disconnect it from the stirrup. I would have hated to see that young rider hit the ground on that asphalt. So, yes, weird things do happen.
HAS anyone here actually tried the Acavallo stirrups? I’ve been eyeballing them for about a month now…
I was told recently that Pony Club (in the US) is no longer allowing Peacock stirrups, claiming that they are too dangerous.
If you are referring to these: https://www.oldmillsaddlery.com/en/Acavallo-Arena-Alupro-Stirrups/m-42613.aspx
I have them and love them. My ankles don’t get as tired, and I’ve come off with them already. They worked beautifully with a spin and buck.
I have an anecdote of 1 but I dislike my safety stirrups that open at the bottom. Mine are Samshields. They have opened when I wish they wouldn’t have (or sometimes seemingly randomly) many times.
I just got my Alupro safety stirrups.
I will put them on my Talavera Potrera saddle, the saddle I am least likely to fall out of.
I am keeping my Tech Venice slope safety stirrups on my jumping saddle. I have already proven that I can fall off my jumping saddle easily.
I am giving my bent leg safety stirrups to my friend Shannon so she can put them on her dressage saddle (really my saddle but since I’m not using it and it fits one of her horses she has it.) I also gave her some stability stirrup leathers too so if I have to ride one of her horses in this saddle
See my post above from October 2. I have those.
Ah ha that’s where I got the link for a cheaper version! Review?? You didn’t mention if you liked them or not I’m currently using some expensive composite stirrups I got as a gift many many moons ago and I LOVE them, but I ride alone and just think maybe I need to do everything in my power to be as safe as possible…
I actually like them a lot! I wasn’t sure coming off of MDC Ultimate stirrups that are very heavy. But I like the feel and they have the wider foot bed than I was used to. It only took a ride or two to get used to them, and now I really like them.
(Sorry I forgot to actually give my review in that Oct 2 post )
Yep, I love them on my dressage saddle. Went to LeMieux Vectors for my jumping saddle.
Well you did NOT have to show me those… because how much do I love the auburn ones that also happen to be my farm color?
LeMieux Vectors
@TheJenners These ones have a little lip that prevent that accidental opening I mentioned before. Worth a shot!!
I have those (the Vectors) and like them a lot. I still prefer my FreeJumps which are not dressage legal but the Vectors are a very close second.
Well you did NOT have to show me those… because how much do I love the auburn ones that also happen to be my farm color?
LOL, that is the color I have. Makes a nice monochromatic look with my dark brown jumping saddle and brown boots.
NOT HELPING
I have a dark brown jump saddle and a brown dressage saddle so hmmm
