It seems the dog might not really be a certified service dog after all.

I’m in the “I don’t really see that the huge deal is”. I mean the dog is clearly not bothered by it.
Should he be doing it? No. Should the parents ensure he doesn’t do it again? Probably a good idea. Does it deserve world-wide condemnation and hatred? Nope, not in my opionion.
It was pretty dumb of her to post it. Given the highly polarizing opinions she seems to garner she should have known that this would blow up.
What’s that saying - any publicity is good publicity…some people are so focused on the 'cuteness" of a situation they lose sight of all else.

New to the dog world? I could tell you crazy stories about world wide condemnation. For example, a friend was transporting a dog with a martingale collar…turns out the dog was a biter…got her in the neck and she let go. Dog got away with leash and collar. Photo and location was posted on facebook with my friend’s phone number (big mistake as it turns out). She got threatening and abusive phone calls and a death threat because the dog got away from her.
BTW, this was a woman who has spent her nights and weekends for the last decade volunteering with a breed rescue and with Dogs Unchained and a local shelter.
People are effing nuts.
Oh I realize their a lots of wackadoos out there. Which is why I think posting it was dumb on her part.

Tempest in a teapot. Yeah, you don’t want a kid standing on a dog, dumb photo, but massive overreaction.
The dog seems to be Trig’s service dog, an English Lab named Jill, which they got in August. She was trained at a service dog center which uses traditional guide breeds - Labs, Goldens and German Shepherds - so at least appears to be serious about actually creating service dogs.

So now we know who the dog is, that makes it OK?
BTW, “English Lab” is not a breed. Do you mean a Labrador Retriever imported from England?

It is still irrelevant that the kid has downs. I still don’t feel bad - if you get bit or fall down. That is your fault. You got what was coming.
This is possibly the bitchiest thing I’ve ever read on COTH. And that’s going some.

Nah, it is just the truth. It’s called suffering the consequences of your actions.

Assuming one has the mental capacity to recognize that the action has consequences, and what those consequences might be.

People with Downs syndrome are pretty smart. i am sure he can learn this. The child is also fairly young, and with his dingbat mother, who knows if he will learn much common sense.
I can only hope that her lovely son can teach Sarah Palin about authentic behavior and true concern and love. All things that Palin cannot possibly pocess in her limited world.
