At first I thought this was a bit of lighthearted fun, but it seems it could jeopardize his shot at Paris ‘24.

To me, that’s just lighthearted fun. His bits are covered. I hope his national federation reconsiders.
Oh my goodness. His heels are down and his form is pretty good. He should get extra points for that! I mean…the sheer nerve alone
Humorless bas----!!!
Oh jeez, that’s all in fun. We talk about how no one wants to watch horse sports because we’re so stuck up. Well, here ya go.
This seems like the kind of thing where a warning would suffice.
So I guess they haven’t suspended him yet but he has a qualifier event coming up and he can’t compete while in review? I don’t know AUS procedures but hope it’s speedy!
I am embarassed to admit, when my friend first sent me the article I was like “what’s a mankini”? I thought I was about to see something extremely culturally insensitive.
And then I googled “mankini” and was like “ohhh, FFS.”
Don’t we have bigger battles to pick at the moment?
Seems like we all agree–what a massive overreaction.
I’ve seen nearly as revealing outfits at the Oscars–and that’s not supposed to be a costume party event, as this was.
I mean, I understand the need for some sort of response from the top. But it doesn’t seem worthy of interfering with someone’s livelihood. “Yo, keep the costumes PG next time.”
He just needed a NSFW banner, maybe on a flagpole mounted to a stirrup. That would have made it even funnier, imo.
Yet Cesar Parra has been beating the shit out of horses for YEARS and despite DOZENS of complaints and sending the videos to the appropriate organizations, it took someone posting videos on the internet for any governing body to act.
Is there a specific rule that he is supposed to have broken? Or did he have a “wardrobe malfunction” that led to a violation of a law or statute?
If not, I’m confused about the basis for the suspension? If so, then I understand the suspension, but I’m curious about the wording of whatever rule they’re using to suspend him.
(For the record, I’m of the “there ought to be a law!” camp, but if there isn’t one already in place, I don’t understand why he should be suspended for showing poor taste in his choice of costumes.)
Maybe Australia is like the United States…Violence is okay but any kind of nudity/sexuality is forbidden. Just like in movie ratings!
I just saw a post that EA cleared him.

Australia has a very different culture from America: I’m surprised this was ever an issue.
The story made the New York Times. Way to go national federation in making a great sport look silly to non-horse folks.

I told someone he’s Australian, we should be more surprised he wasn’t totally naked.
For the record last year at this show a woman competed in a gold bikini but nobody complained.
This was on the BBC World News podcast last night/this morning. Goodness.
That is what I wondered, if it would be an issue if a woman competed in a bikini.
Interesting that no one complained about that.
