Louder for those in the back.
I’d much rather see a happy horse kindly ridden by a nearly naked man than an anxious one getting beaten up by a clothed one.

I just saw this in the NYT and came over here to see if it was already posted. I read the NYT story and laughed.

Seriously. With all the serious issues surrounding the sport about horse welfare–bitting, unfair jumps, tack choices, overuse of whips–THIS results in facing a possible suspension?
I love costume classes, and I admit the costume isn’t isn’t my personal cup of Earl Grey, but ya know, if he can ride dressed like that effectively and isn’t bothered by chafing, more power to him!
He was obviously concerned about chaffing: he put a cloth over his saddle!
Well some old prune complained so they had to address it . I get that. And I think they handled it perfectly. Quickly squashed and finger wag, don’t do it again. Now get back to business and win a medal . The end.
Apparently the original complainer took about a dozen close up photos and videos of his nether regions as he rode the course as “evidence”. Imagine being on the ground jury, omg, I am dying laughing just thinking about it.
Hilarious! Glad the equestrian community has rallied around him.
He’s wearing a helmet, along with the man-kini, he’s got all of the important bits covered.
I assumed that was to protect the leather from any dampness! The tea towel didn’t look very comfortable!
I figured that was part of his costume. Like his beach towel that he is sitting on.
It actually looked like that saddle was covered with fairly substantial padding. Smart man! (not just protecting his privates, but also protecting his saddle from, um, their output.)
my memory of it is pretty vague but didn’t a french rider do a class totally naked and bareback 15? years ago
Yes, I think the video is on YouTube
That double standard is beyond infuriating. And I’m speaking as a woman here. (For the record, I don’t think the woman should have been sanctioned either).
As if our sport gets more media coverage by tenfold for this as compared to Ros Canter winning Badminton by fifteen marks on an 11 year old. Sigh. I’m going back to bed for a century.
I will bet you $5 that the cloth was for the benefit of the groom, not the rider!
Shane Rose has a New York Times article. I don’t have a subscription so cannot gift a link. Maybe someone here has a subscription.
See if this works:
Yes, the link works. Thanks for sharing that.
Well. The article doesn’t have the actual photos of the actual mankini-wearing Shane.
Although they did have this link. I guess that … er, covers the bases.
He does answer a funny direct question that he doesn’t recommend riding in a mankini, for comfort reasons.
video interview with Shane, no details spared …
Did my gift link up thread not work?
