I’ve shipped saddles before - I’ve even shipped a saddle TO Trumbull Mountain from my local UPS store before, according to their computer. I don’t remember how much it cost, but today I was quoted…191 bucks. Ground. This cannot possibly be right, but they insisted it was the cheapest price.
Do I go to USPS? Another UPS store. FedEx???
They must have entered something wrong.
I think I pay about $25 to $40 at the regular post office for “priority” (2-3 day shipping) without insurance.
That is what I thought. Guess I will pack it myself (gotta find a box) and go to post office. Tx!
You can get good sturdy moving boxes at Lowe’s, the large size is good for a saddle. I shipped NC to CT just a couple of months ago and it was about $35. Can’t imagine why it’s so much at your UPS store!
Well, it wasn’t the last time I checked. Tempted to go to another one.
I’ve always found USPS to have the best prices for shipping a saddle.
Some stores upcharge the UPS price by double or triple. Could this have happened?
The size of the box influences the total cost. Also, many UPS stores only offer you the overnight shipping instead of the ground shipping. Don’t have them pack it either.
Depending on where the saddle is going, I usually figure $40-$50 for shipping. I ship UPS through my husband’s account, not through a store. It’s always been very reliable and not too expensive. I buy/sell quite a few saddles too.
Just shipped a 17 in county Ground USPS for $70 which includes insurance. I buy and sell saddles often. I use only USPS because they give the option for insurance and I let that be the buyers ordeal if it ever went missing. So far I’ve had great luck with shipping saddles both priority and ground with USPS. I used fedex once and it was more expensive.
I find that the medium size Home Depot boxes are the perfect size to ship most English saddles. It’s about $25
Agreeing with other posters–USPS tends to be cheapest.
UPS quoted you that? I know we wouldn’t unless it was an expedited delivery or out of the country.
Some UPS stores charge more for having to repackage a large or expensive item and the box size. We offer options for pick up and electronic labels if it is c oming to us. Perhaps if it is not, the other companies do the same?

My UPS store doesn’t allow packing it yourself, and their prices are substantially higher than the regular post office.
Oh my god, that has to be wrong, I shipped about 7 saddles back to them about 8 years ago, it was 25 bucks a pop. Lord I would have a fit. could never have afforded it.
UPS is the most expensive for saddles, I think. FedEx can actually have better rates on big stuff too.
$190 is insane.
There must be something wrong. I pack into the smallest box I can using USPS so I don’t hit the “oversized” package measurement. It is more expensive now to ship a saddle than it was a few years ago, but I paid $45 shipping for my endurance saddle and it was pretty big and heavy.
try another store. I think those are franchised, I had something similar recently, big difference between two places, the lower one was way lower from a siore that only did UPS. The higher place did money orders and Western Union too. Wasnt a saddle but a good sized box and I packed it myself.
I’m not sure they are allowed to do that by UPS. I know that some stores try to force you into letting them pack but if you call the main company, that’s not the UPS policy.
My son was shipping some things home from college and we had to send him the UPS labels so that he could ship ground. They were insisting on overnight because the store made more $$.
Ok, convinced! No, it was ground. I checked. I assume they did make a mistake as I’ve used that exact store for this exact shipment before at a normal price, but the girl wasn’t budging.
I’m packing it myself and taking it to USPS.
Jay, it is coming to you - it’s my husband’s Thorowgood (we just put in an order for his new one with you this week…)…
I use the 20x20x24 box, pack it myself, and ship through Staples/UPS. Make sure they do NOT charge you for packing, which is really high. Price should be under $50, depending on destination.
