Show Jumping in Yoga Pants

“Women don’t look good in white pants, so might as well be comfortable.” – Danielle Goldstein, as quoted by NBCSN commentators.

Just finished her round at Wellington on NBCSN. On Lizziemary.

What do you think of jumping in yoga pants? More comfortable than breeches?

IYO do women look good in white breeches or other white pants?

I think we look elegant in white pants! I’ve never tried yoga pants.

Maybe Danielle Goldstein doesn’t look good in white breeches, but lots of other women riders look fabulous. I don’t think I would like yoga pants as they are not very fitted, at least not the ones I have seen, and I would find that uncomfortable. In general I find well fitting breeches very comfortable, although perhaps not for someone who is very overweight.

After reading the articles about one of the European riders (IIRC?) who does the same thing, I bought myself a pair of higher end yoga pants to give it a go.

I was not overly impressed. I was left reminded of the fact that a little bit of grip on the knee is a good thing. Not becuase I need the stick between knee and saddle, but mostly because anything on the inside of the knee (even just an extra layer of fabric) makes the material stiff enough to not rub. My yoga pants were “fine,” just not quite as comfortable as my yoga-pant-style breeches (e.g. my Horze tights and Kerrits winter tights/breeches).

I do have a pair of Animo breeches that have nothing on the inside of the knee, but I think the fabric is sturdier than a pair of (even high end) yoga pants, and they’re perfectly fine to wear as well.

So I guess the short answer from me is that yoga pants work just fine. But I still like breeches a little better.

I school sometimes in yoga pants, especially during the hotter months. Not sure I could ever bring myself to show in them though

I don’t wear yoga pants because I do not find them comfortable to ride in. I also don’t find jeans comfortable to ride in. Other than riding, I love yoga pants and jeans  I just think they don’t protect me from rubs/pinching or slipping about the way that breeches do. Maybe some work for that, but I love my breeches – and breeches > schooling tights imo, but that has only been as I’ve gotten older. I used to ride in whatever whenever in my teens/college days.

As for do people look good riding in white pants? In yoga pants? In _____? Well, maybe it is just me but I don’t pay that much attention to the bottom half of someones riding attire unless it is a bright color (fine for schooling imo, sometimes too much otherwise) or full of holes or something really obvious. Same for jackets… I notice if it is a bold color or a color I don’t like, but otherwise I don’t take much notice. I’ve never stared at someones photo going “oh hell those pants look _____”. Ok, ok, I do notice that weird black logo triangle blob on breeches that seem to be popular in the big leagues right now and think that trend needs to go away. 99.9% of the time all I notice is the horse, the riders position, etc.

I rode in whatever as a kid. The only true wardrobe fails I remember were polyester gabardine dress pants over pantyhose (super slippy) and a tube top ( leave that to your imagination). However we did not have yoga pants in the 1970s.

As an adult I like the comfort and protection of proper breeches, preferably full seat. My yoga pants just seem too flimsy. But then I also avoid the riding tights that are yoga pants with knee patches.

Once there was a rule about could only show in breeches with belt loops precisely to rule out yoga pants?

As far as white breeches some women look fantastic in them and others don’t. Unfortunately due to the pervasive body dysmorphia in our culture, the women who look fantastic in them probably hate how they look in everything.

By and large given the same size and brand of breech on the same person I don’t think white looks worse than tan or even a dark color.

We just aren’t used to seeing white pants at all as a fashion item. We had white jeans and white summer trousers or “dress pants” in the 1970s but no white breeches! I haven’t seen anyone in white summer pants for years. Even nurses don’t wear white now!

Can’t really tell that Danielle isn’t wearing breeches unless you’re really paying attention. She looks good, is comfortable, and very competitive. Good for her!

I wear a lot of white.

I think it’s unprofessional and I think woman look AMAZING in white pants, schooling who cares. In a Grand Prix you should be wearing some nice sturdy pants .

man, that’s almost all i exclusively ride in. the only thing is that for the thinner yoga pants you can get rubs on the inside of your leg from the stirrup leathers. some of the thinner yoga pants can be really slick in the saddle but i have a few thicker yoga pants that other than the kneepatch, really offer no difference in shape/contouring/flattering than my riding pants do.

i don’t personally see the difference between breeches & yoga pants in terms of what they advertise to the public… neither conceal anything at all… i mean, i know most men can’t tell the difference between my $200 white tredstep riding pants and my $20 marshalls off-brand legging finds.

Really? Why unprofessional? Would you even know if she hadnt told everyone in an interview?

Hunh. I don’t even own yoga pants. I have humpty billion pairs of breeches that I live in, so I’d feel weird/stupid riding in something else. I have a couple of pairs of whites for classics, but they are nice, sturdy Pikeurs, so they aren’t the see-through ones. If given the choice between see-through whites (gag) and yoga pants I’d probably try the latter! No one looks good in see-through white pants, aside from models, MAYBE. I am decidedly not a model, so I abstain.

Wait, so if she doesn’t like whites, why not just ride in a pair of non-white breeches? It’s odd. But, I actually don’t care what other people wear, so if it works for her…

Whenever I read regardless of discipline (I have done jumping and reining mostly) I always wear yoga pants. I like them but you can buy thin pairs so your not as hot or you can also wear thick pairs and then wear pants over them when it’s cold. Its also a lot cheaper than buying actual breeches. Of course in the show ring I wouldn’t wear yoga pants, I would wear whatever your discipline requires but other than that there’s no point to dress all fancy!

Another reason is if (when) you fall off if you rip or tear your pants they’re super cheap!

I think unless she wants to wear an Israeli military uniform, white is her option as an international grand prix rider.

additionally she notes that she doesn’t find breeches comfortable, which color doesn’t really address.

I’m somewhat reminded of the early days of stretch polyester hunt coats and the ire that induced in some people. It’s cool though because a lot of those people arent around anymore to kvetch.

You must live in a different area than I do! I see white pants, both long and short, all summer long here. And not just the traditional Memorial Day - Labor Day season; I know some women who wear white pants all year long. My own only fashion rule is the Memorial Day - Labor Day one for white, but that’s just what I grew up with and I keep it only for that reason. It’s about the only fashion statement I ever make.

I wasn’t going to shows in the '70s but I seem to remember BN show jumpers wearing white breeches back then.

I used to ride in schooling tights, which I guess fit and feel something like yoga pants, but with knee panels to prevent rubbing.

Okay so funny story: a client of mine had come from a yoga class in the most psychedelic colored yoga pants complete with lightning bolts going up the thigh, pointing to the derriere. She gets her horse ready, I can’t stop laughing at the juxtaposition of tie-die and tall boots, and she eventually climbs upon her stead. I don’t think I have ever seen this horse do the prop-spook but apparently he has been saving it for that day. He prop-spooks, she literally slides to the ground and falls on her butt in a massive pile of horse poop. To this day, the lightning bolts point to a slight brown swirl.

Moral: yoga pants no bueno while riding the ponies.

I have been threatening to wear some of my breeches to yoga class, though. I just got a pair of purple knit Pipers that are super comfy and stretchy and look better than the thin leggings I usually wear to yoga. I think they’d make great yoga pants.

Sounds like a Slip-and-Slide event to me!

I can’t even stand to hack out in my yoga pants, let alone fly around a jumping course. Pinching, slipping, no knee patch- all sounds like a very unpleasant experience.

Why not just use a pair of hybrid breeches? Not uncomfortable or restrictive and provide far more protection than a thin yoga pant.

Cause I guess it works for her

maybe he should wear yoga pants?

I make my own breeches from a moisture management tricot material and stretch suede. I guess they are glorified yoga pants, but because I make them, they fit perfectly, and they have seams etc on the thigh like “real” breeches do (even a euro seat!) and aren’t flatlocked like yoga pants.

Y’all can enjoy your butt sweat, I’ll be over here dressing like an athlete because riding is a sport. And if I never have to have a belt buckle imprint in my sweaty skin ever again, so much the better.

@soloudinhere I’m so nosy. Where do you get stretch suede?? I want to try my hand at this! Ok both fabrics? Do you use a particular pattern or did you use a pair of breeches you had or make your own?
