Show Jumping in Yoga Pants

I started with a pattern for running tights. I’ve made a lot of changes for waistband etc. I’ll send you some more info about fabrics etc. you will need a serger or a fairly good sewing machine, the stretchy fabrics can be a pain.

It takes me about two hours to rip out a pair now that I’ve perfected it - the base fabric comes in I think 30 colors? So lots of choices

I actually started this because I wanted ivory breeches instead of white, and have gone down the rabbit hole:

PNW. A good year is ten months of rain and 6 weeks of sunshine. The national costume for fall winter spring seems to be black yoga pants and then people seem to get into shorts to celebrate summer. I had skin tight white flared jeans when I was 16 and they looked pretty cute but somehow summer was longer then …

I very rarely notice what someone is wearing unless it really, really sticks out. I can’t imagine yoga pants are really that different than riding tights with the exception of a knee patch (which I would miss for stickiness but I guess a pro with better skills doesn’t).

They make summer riding breeches and tights, I’m not sure why you’d have to go out and buy Yoga pants for riding. Unless you basically wear yoga pants all the time despite never actually doing any yoga.

Because they are half the price but basically the same?

Yes I’ve always been told stretchy fabrics are a pain to work with but I’m not actually working at present so it might be time to practice haha and thank you! I look forward to the secrets!

This may be true, if you aren’t wearing lululemon :). But I would expect yoga pants lacking knee patches or full seat to shred much more quickly than breeches and therefore less economical. I get years of wear out of my good breeches riding daily.

I expect climate also plays into it. In the PNW it is rarely hot enough that you can’t wear breeches.

Maybe for the show jumper white breeches get tossed pretty quickly when they get stainec so yoga pants are cheaper and disposable?

I’m not sure we have white yoga pants locally!

These are WHITE yoga pants? Can’t say I’ve often seen those in stores? At least not ones think enough/durable enough to ride in.

I can buy the same icefil fabric that kerrits uses for $10.49 per yard. That’s at retail for small yardage. A pair of leggings takes a yard. The icefil tights have no knee patches and aren’t made any differently than any other leggings. In fact most riding breeches and tights are just made with standard 4 thread overlock and the knee patches are just attached on top.

I know we think these are something special. Even full breeches are just made with stretch woven fabrics, they’re hardly anything special construction or fabric wise. I doubt if you saw me in my ivory show breeches at a show you would think they were anything other than $$$ breeches. I made five pairs of them for $21 in materials.

Oh making them yourself is a whole other matter! That’s amazing! And yes, the markup over bare material in most manufactured stuff is insane. Advertising product development salaries profit rent unsold inventory.

When I was a kid, moms sewed clothes that were nicer than what was in the stores. But I failed home ec class. Also fashion has shifted now so everyone wants clothes that are machine made, sneakers jeans yoga pants t-shirts down parkas, rather than things thst can be handmade like tailored skirts, wool coats, dresses, leather shoes.

Anyhow i personally don’t go for the riding tights thing, I want sturdy and full seat. I wouldn’t be riding in tights with no knee patches!

My yoga pants aren’t made out of icefil, just a rather flimsy cotton lycra.

Says who that things made from knits like yoga pants and t shirts can’t be handmade? I can’t sew tailored things like coats to save my life but I can whip out a t shirt in a half hour. I made a hoodie this morning and am currently working on a cropped ballerina sweater. I did panel leggings with mesh calves on thursday night. I did my own jeans a few weeks ago but I’m too lazy to make another pair for awhile. Work pants, sheath dresses, even sunshirts, are things you can make yourself if you’re motivated, and don’t mind investing in some equipment. It does take time, though, I don’t get to sleep a lot between a full time job, two young horses, a husband, and a house to take care of. But I enjoy it.

You can easily learn to do these things if you’d like to - I never took home ec and my mother and grandmother are about as domestic as my dog, but I decided I wanted to learn to sew and I would say I make about 85% of what I wear these days. Fabric is expensive so it’s cheaper to buy stuff at Walmart, but I’m opposed to clothing made for pennies in Malaysia and making my own was the simplest way to solve that.

Yeah my friends just celebrated their 15th wedding anniversary this week. I remember their wedding especially and quite fondly as the wedding I made my dress the night before; double layer sheath dress, a sheer over a satin. Which I sewed in the Mount Holyoke laundry room because the light in my dorm was atrocious :lol::lol: my dad taught me to sew!

I stand corrected

Also you have a serger, I believe?

Everything I have tried to make has always been warped. I’m not sure I can sew a straight seam even on a piece of cotton sheet

So I’m impressed.

Ariat has some new, super light, cooling tights (“Freja” tights) out that remind me a lot of some of my nicer workout gear. Very soft.

I do have a serger - but I didn’t buy one until after I learned to sew knits. It does make things faster but there’s actually a lot of the leggings that I do on a regular sewing machine because the stitches are stronger. Sewing straight does help, though

Here’s a recent pair of riding tights I made - trying out a new euro seat pattern with mesh calf.

Using the mojo shorts for my yoga saved my ass from frequent changing of clothes, I have spent money on a lot of clothing lines before choosing the mojo shorts, it’s really the best and I recommend all to it as its flexible and optimum body hugged.

Except she purposely wears ones with mesh and other details that make them stand out. I get it, she’s flamboyant. It’s not my taste, but jumper riders aren’t judged on their polished appearance so I guess she can peacock as much as she wants.

Well, actually, it’s pretty hard to find plain white yoga pants. That’s not really a look the average woman wants to wear and sweat in.

There are also copious breeches these days with mesh and embellishment :lol::lol:

spend time in the jumpers in Europe especially and you’ll see some remarkable fashion statements that are purpose designed equestrian wear.
