From Beezie’s blog about Authentic:

I wish I could say exactly what happened with Authentic. John and I aren’t totally sure. Just before the triple, he started shaking his head violently and moving his ear as if he had water in it or something. He was completely distracted, and since he was shaking his head so much, I had no control at all. He had no idea that triple was coming up until he was almost on top of the jump standard, and then he ducked out of the way. We circled and jumped through the triple, but he was still shaking his head pretty badly throughout. He has shaken his head like that before, but never so that it’s affected his performance. He is such a great horse and he has come through so often for me. We couldn’t love him more – these kind of things have to be expected once in a while.

Authentic seems to be fine now. I’ll take him out in the morning, make sure everything’s okay, and then ride him again in the evening as usual since we’re competing late in the evening.

I was pretty surprised at what happened with Authentic too… I think all of the US riders put in good efforts though and I am totally bummed I will miss out on the finals tomorrow as I have to work. :frowning:

I wish GB would stop sending all the old farts out to compete. They have some brilliant youngsters that could kick a-- but don’t get the chance. They could even make up a team of 2nd generation Whittakers!
lol, you may be right but it’s not John getting the massage, it’s Peppermill and he’s only 11!

Anyone hear reports of how the footing is being received? It sounds firm, or is that just because the ring has so many mics?
Everything I have read, including Beezie’s blog, says that they like the footing much better than Athens.

Medalist or not–doesn’t make her the best commentator…sure she “knows what’s going on”–personally, I would rather watch than listen, so I mute her out.

Just me and my opinion.
You all can’t have it both ways. In order to get better coverage and more equestrian events on TV the “common man” has to be introduced to the excitment of show jumping. That is NOT going to happen with a silent commentator. Besides the Olympic sport is all about the glory of winning, the agony of defeat and the hard luck back story. You need a commentator to relay that and get people interested.

I agree. Although listening to it myself can be a little annoying, I think the information being relayed would help draw in the average person. Since show jumping is our most easily understandable equestrian sport and the scoring system is easy to understand, I think we really need to try to draw in the common spectator. If I have to be slightly annoyed in order for them to do this, so be it!

I think they could despise the footing with 99% of the fibers in their being and still “technically” like it more than Athens.

But yea, I think everyone likes the footing, period.

Too true! I’ve seen very little coverage of the equestrian events coverage, being a non-cable/dish and old timey computer owner, but really enjoyed the commentary on CBC when they showed the Canadian riders first rounds. Excellent work there IMHO. Not totally dumbed down to be annoying, but informative for the uninformed, and interesting enough for people who somewhat up to date. If they don’t throw in some information that the nonhorseperson can understand, we’ll be up Feces Creek without a conventional means of propulsion in regards to horse stuff on mainstream tv. I’m sure there are people deep into gymnastics, archery etc., that find the basic chatter annoying too, but it does help the average Joe understand what they’re watching. In the case of Beach Volleyball, I almost feel sorry for the peeps covering that, heck after the hours they’ve put in, what is left for them to talk about???

Kudos to CBC on their new hire (Beth Underhill if memory serves) and hopefully we’ll get to see some more coverage on the noncable channel, I’d be happy to catch the highlights.

I emailed CBC to thank them for the amazing coverage on Bold and received a nice thank you (even if it is automatic it was nice!).
The coverage has been amazing!

Does anyone know if it is possible to save the videos/highlights from nbc/cbc onto the computer and copy them onto a dvd (technically). I assume there are copyrights issues too. My friend does not have cable/satellite and I have the stuff saved on PVR. No idea how to transfer that to a VHS tape either (it does give me the option though on the programming of the PVR).

I’d like to know how to get this to DVD too. If you go to: http://www.tvtonic.com/olympics/install/
you can download many rides, but I haven’t yet figured out how to burn them to DVD.

Thanks for the reminder to email CBC. I did last time and like to think that all kinds of other people did too and that’s why the coverage is once again stellar:)

Hokay, all legalities or lack thereof aside, I just did a little experiment. I discovered earlier that if you leave the live feed window open even after the event is over, you can watch over and over and over to your heart’s content. However, if you close the window you’re SOL. I’ve left today’s jumping open so I can take a look again at a few rides I missed earlier. The actual experiment involved a right click, hitting copy and then going to my desk top and right clicking again. Mini Mac politely asked me if I’d like to open a new burn file:eek: I didn’t because I’m more interested in dressage but maybe this information might be useful to you, FalseImpression:)

Ok, ducking and running now before my guilt overcomes me and the thought that we might screw up our free online coverage if the copy/burn/write thing works and becomes public knowledge and CBC finds out and throws a tantrum keeps me up for nights on end:(

Carlsson was only jumping 1.60 in Germany when he was purchased eight months prior to the trials. He was a bit too hot for the Germans and has brought his game to the top in a very short time. Will has an incredible instinct with the more difficult horses and has been so instrumental with this horses’ advancement. I think that with a little time to settle and hopefully get a bit tired and more savvy with the technical aspects he will just get better and better. He just needs to focus and accept his rider’s direction to peak in these games.
Sapphire seems ready to come on with his best game and Authentic ?? Maybe just a bad day. I still believe that this team is as qualified and ready as any that we have seen. Laura getting the last rail well… damn. GO team !!!
Thanks to all of you posters because I was on a plane all day and missed the whole thing.

thank you for the suggestions

However tvtonic is only for US residents and won’t load on my computer :frowning:

I am on a PC and when I right-click, I can only change settings. Sigh! I will keep looking into this though!

Or I will play with my PVR/VCR and probably pull my hair out!!

Peppermill OUT.

Kate Green, H&H reporter in Hong Kong

17 August, 2008

Britain is well in the hunt in the team show jumping competition in Hong Kong, lying in equal fourth place after the first round.

They are on 16 faults with Canada behind Sweden (13), but the team is down to three men after the shock non-appearance of John Whitaker and Peppermill.

Team manager Derek Ricketts reported the stallion to have emerged from the stable in the morning in a very stiff state.

“We don’t know what happened,” said Derek.

"It’s almost as though he’s tied up, though that isn’t necessarily the problem. We’ve been working on him all day with physios, and even had him out in the break this evening, but we can’t risk a horse like this.

“It’s a terrible blow, but I couldn’t be happier with the way the others are jumping.”

Could someone post a link to Beezie’s blog? Thanks!
