Sigh - more designer breeds

And almost impossible to housetrain.

My second chance humane society dog is a Rat Terrier - Shih Tzu mix. When people ask about her breeding, I tell them she is a rat-schitz. She is quite adorable.

Anyone remember when cockapoos were all the rage? Such a missed marketing opportunity: could have been called cockadoodles. That at least would be really fun to say.

It’s a St. Bernard/poodle mix. So many comments on TT about how so many people want one.

But here’s one of the comments:
Doesn’t the D in doodle come from LabraDor (labradoodle)? Wouldn’t this technically be a St Bernoodle?

Poodles are wonderful dogs and Joe Public can’t tell a purebred poodle in a teddy bear cut from a doodle …

This is my 5 month old Standard Poodle, they can also be quite large.

I mean, if your bladder were located 10 feet away from your brain, you’d probably have the same issue.

The funny thing about this is the original doodle, the Australian labradoodle is actually a poodle labrador cross that then had cocker spaniel introduced into it to make it theoretically calmer or something (I’ve owned a cuckoo spaniel, calm is not a word I used to describe him). But people also wanted smaller, so I presume they just really doubled down on the cocker spaniel. My neighbors just got an Australian labradoodle and it is probably going to end up not much bigger than a cocker spaniel and it looks just like a freaking 1970s cockapoo.

The world has come full circle.

I had a cockapoo (for years, she just died from complications of cushings). She was the sweetest dog ever but really, dumb as a box of rocks. She had to compete with two brilliant brothers, though (a poodle and a misbegotten chihuahua sheltie or something cross who I called a reticulated fence-jumper) so there’s that. Trainable, she was not. Sweet, she was. She loved everyone, and was one of our vet’s favorite dogs (which is a good thing because she was sick so much). She would see the vet’s office and her stump of a tail (she had been docked, which I don’t do but I got her in interesting circumstances) would just start going (I said she didn’t have a lot going on upstairs). Cataract surgery, drops in her eyes 4x a day for months, she LOVED it. Anything that had to do with people or playing with her buddies she loved. I called her the World’s Happiest Dog. I miss her awful, but I recognize her breeding wasn’t great.

Ugh, I went out to lunch this week and we dined on the patio. Large well-behaved dog with a large party. Across from us a couple were dining with a TINY puppy, in the waddling stage. Like maybe 9 weeks. My friend, who left her Corgi at home because of the heat, asked about the puppy. They acquired it the day before and were “practicing” with having him out in public before they took him on a flight the next day. Very precious reddish labra doodle. Sigh.

I have a Poodle/Dachshund mix and she is a happy, cuddly little dog. But she is a serious barker who will get everyone riled up and barking and howling. Her coat felts if she isn’t brushed regularly and she needs professional grooming just as often as my purebred Toy Poodle.

Today I saw a full sized (one of those big uns) bill board advertising sign on the side of the highway promoting a doodle breeder and thought of this thread.

Update – for those who care – beagle/jack cross just got his AKC novice trick dog title (I’ve never titled a dog, but a number of folks in my family have.) He is a brilliant – but wild (befitting his lineage) – little guy, so I’m glad he landed with me, but it is a constant struggle keeping him occupied and most of all – tired!! He is a versatile little guy, and loves to learn, so I’m sure there are many things we can do together! I’m seeing some scentwork, agility and more trick titles in his future!

Absolutely!!

It also sounds like you’re a responsible owner (unlike 90% of dog owners where I live), so that gives me some hope.

There’s one girl with a dachshund that I always see and, like every other small dog owner in the city where I live, does not have it leash trained. Just lets it zoom around all over the sidewalk and then gets scary aggressive when it sees cyclists, lunging at them in the crosswalk and going ballistic.

Pretty sure he’s not neutered, either. I’ve noticed that’s a trend in Australia, for reasons unknown.

My nephew just bought an AussiePoo. He adores him, which is all that matters but I just saw him a couple weeks ago. He is about 4-5 months and well, the cross is just .

Way too much poodle influence for me.

What makes a doodle an Australian doodle? Do they come from down under?

There’s a registry:

It’s WILD to go through the breeder list and see what they charge for puppies. Like, several thousand more than what I’ve ever spent on show quality purebred puppies from nationally recognized breeders. :open_mouth:
