SMALL (but talented!!) Trakes and/or Hanoverian Stallions

I never understand why tall riders seem to always be concerned with finding a big enough horse. For me, as a 5’2" 110lb woman, I can’t seem to find enough talented SMALL horses, with big enough strides! Therefore, I will be breeding for me next time around. Mare is 16.3hh. I even considered breeding to a nice, large welsh or connemera but can’t shake the warmblood lust!

There are several tks that are around 16 hh. And there are some, like Incantate, who don’t throw a lot of size.

I really haven’t run in to any stallions that are UNDER 16hh. Personally, I would LOVE to find a stallion that is around 15.1!

I’ll never forget this GORGEOUS, TALENTED AS THEY COME, PERFECTLY built, sleek, black w/ chrome, dutch, dressage gelding. He was only 15.1 at the most! He ended up going to one of the best dressage trainers in the country because he was being owned by a homeless man, who couldn’t afford to keep him. Such a shame, as this man literally gave up his home for this horse he loved to no end! :(:frowning:

Anyway, I digress. I REALLY wish I could remember that horses breeding!! He was the epitome of the most wonderful small horse!

Well you could also consider an oversized (14.2+) German Riding Pony stallion with a good bit of horse blood.

Well the prob w/finding a stallion that is under 15.3 is most have this as a min height reg. the ATA did just approve a 15.3 hh boy this weekend, Cassius Clay. He’s a chestnut by the Carino stallion, Prince of Prussia.

Thanks! I will certainly check him out, since my first loyalty is always with the Trakes!

There is the stallion Ridley. I think he is approved old/na though i could be mistaken. He is a hanoverian I believe though not approved with the ahs. I think he is around 15 hands.

I had the same problem, I love warmbloods but had trouble finding a small one. There are some fabulous GRP’s out there, thats the direction I would go. I do have an amazing Trak Cross (actually 3/4 trak, 1/4 holst) who matured at 15.3, but starting with a 16.3 mare it might be hard to get small!

Here’s the link for Ridley (15h) – http://www.fair-windsfarm.com/Ridley.html

He’s showing PSG now; he’s REALLY pretty; he’s really well bred, and he has a great stallion owner.

I am giving strong consideration to using an Arabian stallion to produce a horse in the size range you are looking for.

Rubino Bellisimo was only 15.3hh when he did his 100 Day Test in Germany; I think he matured to 16.1h.

I bred a 17.1hh mare to him and the resulting filly matured at 16.1hh herself. And he was successful (very successful) in GP by the time he was 8 or 9 yrs old. Pedigree is impeccable.

For that matter, Weltmeyer was billed as 16.1 or 16.2hh, but I have friends who stood next to him and judged him more like 16-16.1 TOPS.

I bred him to the same 17.1 hh mare and that mare is about 16.2hh.

And The Old Man has killer frozen semen.

not trak or a hano but small and used on pony mares

I don’t know what he throws, but Benidetto is fairly small. He is advertised at 16.1, but when I saw him as a 5 yo, I would have thought 15.3 tops. He is currently schooling I-1.

Here in Europe it seems that people think the bigger the better. I have always found that really stupid because good quality can also come in a smaller package and not everybody wants a huge horse. In the past nobody minded a smaller horse and there were lots of them.

I think Shine is smaller.
he’s a really nice hunter stallion

What about Donarweiss? At the PA AHS Inspection this year, there was an 18+ hand Weltmeyer mare presented. The owners had her infoal to Donarweiss to tone down the size. I believe he is a touch over 16 hands.

Shine is 16.1 and does tend to throw on the small side. I have two by him and the six year old is 16.1 out of a 16.1 mare, while the 6 month old looks to be a medium size too - just what I like! www.oldeoaksfarm.com

Also - look at Jupiter - he is amazing and only 15.3 I believe.

One other really nice small stallion - Empire’s Power - really nice crossed with a big WB or TB mare!

Benidetto is 16.1; I know him well. And although moderate sized himself, he throws very leggy and modern offspring so I would not expect him to downsize a mare. My Hotline mare has two ET foals on the way by him.

What about Escudo II? He is 16.0 hands, and I don’t think he throws large. I bred my “one and only” competition mare to him (she is due next July), and she is 15.3. (She has 3 full sisters, all around the same size–they are by Art Deco out of a small hunter TB mare, MAYBE 15.2 on her tiptoes.)

I am 5’3", about 128 lbs, and OLD. I prefer the small to medium sized horses. MUCH easier to ride, (arguably) more athletic, and easier on themselves. I did a lot of research into stallions before I bred my mare, the “E boys” tend to throw more medium sized and compact horses, and have a lot of get on the ground, hence my choice. I also thought about Shine–he is another moderately sized stallion with a good brain.

Good luck!
