So I want some black half chaps with fringe...

…where can I get them?

Maybe this is an excuse to just get some custom half chaps.

And a wonderful excuse.

Since you have accepted the mission, you might as well spend your car payment at Chuck Pinnell.

A word of warning about fringe: The bottom bit does not mix with mud. It will also create a mud swipe around the bottom of your leg. Sad but true.

You could ask nicely if jn4jenny, who is dropping by the AQHA Congress trade show tomorrow afternoon to see if there’s any smokin’ hot sales on the final day, to keep her eye out. Send me your measurements and budget if you’re interested.

For the high-end stuff, definitely try the custom makers: Chuck Pinnell, Journeyman, Tenney’s, etc. If budget is a concern, Turning Point Leather tends to have really reasonable prices on custom half chaps.

If it’s just a dalliance and you don’t want to spend a small fortune, you could look at motorcycle half chaps. They tend to fit more loosely than riding half chaps, but it’s easy to find ones with fringe for less than $100.

Journeymans is pennies on the dollar compared to Chuck but I love his work and options so I ordered a pair from him. I actually had to cancel my order with Journeymans to get the Pinnell ones. No fringe for me.

Ariat had a pair of half chaps where you could swap out a removable leather strip that covered the zipper (on the outside). They had options like black leather with studs, black leather fringe, etc. Can’t remember the name (cameo?) not sure if they’re still available.

Get the full ones. They are easy to find lol

Turning Point Leather is cheaper? Then be sure to check these guys out. Their full chaps are works of art. I think they’d give Chuck Pinnell a run for his money. Do you agree, jn4jenny?

Google just chaps, they are a uk company but the selection is awesome and they are super people to deal with.

Ariat stopped making the Cameo chaps a while back. I’m pretty sure someone made off the rack fring half chaps (Grand Prix maybe?) but I’m not sure if they still do.

The Tack Shop of Austin still has the GP’s listed (though the photo is a little dark on my monitor)

Grand Prix does make half chaps with fringe in black or brown, for under $200, I think. I have a fringe-less pair and I love them, but they do stretch quite a bit.

I agree, TPL is gorgeous. They don’t seem to have much name recognition among English riders, maybe because they’re based out in New Mexico. TPL’s work is definitely competitive in quality with Chuck Pinnell (says this girl who went to college outside Cville so has seen plenty of lovely Chuck Pinnell chaps in her day) and the TPL custom half chaps start at a shockingly low $175. That’s even cheaper than Journeyman, which I believe starts their half chaps around $200.

And more of their work:

Grand Prix and Pro Chaps both do half chaps with fringe, and both fit me well, so I’ve been happy with them. Both also stretch, so if you do go with either, you want them so tight at first, you need help zipping…then they will fit perfectly after a couple of rides.

And MVP is correct, fringe and mud is a PITA. I save my fringe chaps for summer wear only (or indoors only, although that’s no longer an option for me now tat all are home).

Pro Chaps doesn’t make chaps with fringe anymore. I emailed to ask them just last week.

Oh my, the ones with the beading. I had no idea anything so awesome even existed. Sigh…

Oops, my mistake. I bought some in the last year, so must have been the last run of them. Sometimes they still show up on eBay.

Oh man you guys are killing me. Now I’m drooling over full chaps…

Well if you’re going THERE, you might want to consider the Barnstable semi-custom chaps through Smartpak. Yes, you can get fringe–and decorative stitching, and monogramming. Even if you trick them out with every possible option, they’re still under $250. Pretty awesome deal.

Oooh thanks jen! When do you open your personal shopping business? Seriously you always know the best tips, tricks and deals…

I have wanted “nice” full chaps since the 90s when custom full chaps were all the rage. Someday I’m going to do it. Maybe when I lose the rest of the baby weight (ya I keep telling myself that…)
