So now I have a donkey! Fly sheet & mask that fit? --updated w. Donkey Tax--

My problem this year is my huge dry lot has grass. We had so much rain this spring grass took over before the weeds could set in. Ugh.

My only concern with the mask is my donk is a true browser and nibbles weeds along the fenceline. I may have to run a strand of hot wire 12ā€ off the ground to keep her away from the old woven wire fence where Iā€™m concerned the mask could get caught.

Will report back!

Iā€™m keeping fingers crossed!

I donā€™t have the ability to post photos but the Sweet Net grazing muzzle arrived today. The material to make the netting is VERY soft, feels like silk. Itā€™s absolutely wicked hot & humid here but the netting isnā€™t going to contribute to heat issues.

I measured per the website but probably could use the next size up. I think the issue with a standard donkey nose verses horse nose measurement is- while the length from noseband to lip might be the same the big donkey nose takes up more net space. I donā€™t have quite the drop they show. However, itā€™s not stopped her from grazing one bit- first time in 2 weeks sheā€™s been out of the stall run.

After 2 hours of use I recommend. :hugs:

It has not stopped her from grazing?

I see where that was confusing. She is grazing with net on and only able to get nibbles, not gobbles.

Thatā€™s great! :slightly_smiling_face:

Iā€™m sure sheā€™s glad to be out.

For what itā€™s worth, it was 100F here at 6:00PM with high humidity. When I took off the halter with net there was zero sweat.

Thank you all for donkey details!

Donkey news

She does have Cushingā€™s, no insulin resistance yet. We are going to start her on small dose of my horseā€™s tablets.

The diaper cream works great to keep bugs off and help heal, but as soon as one spot is healed or covered, bugs pick a new spot to target. Itā€™s weird. It isnā€™t symmetrical. One flank was eaten and is on itā€™s way to healing and she gets a giant new spot on her upper arm.

Her fly sheet is on the way. The only one in her size looks like a floral shower curtain. Yes, I will post pics.

My issue would be finding a grazing halter that would fit my mini donksā€™ heads appropriately. The throatlatch is almost always too tight with most mini halters. Also, I donā€™t see that net slowing my piggies down in the slightest.

Iā€™m Googling / but do you have a link to your donkey weight tape?

I could only find it in the UK. They shipped FAST.

You can also use this chart

With both, you need an accurate height. I borrowed a stick from a trainer down the road. When I tried without the stick, I knew I wasnā€™t getting a good measurement. So that could be a pain.

Hello, while weā€™re sharing, has anyone had any luck with hoof boots? Iā€™m looking for some for a standard donkey.

Thanks in advance!

Are they for riding or ? Iā€™ve never had a need for them.

No. Poor Clayton - the standard - is battling Whiteline and overall pitiful front feet. His left front in particular is hard to look at. I was hoping boots would give him a little cushion and contain his treatment - because soaking is a little unappreciated. Easyboot is closed today so I will call them Monday. His fronts are very upright, so I imagine fit will be tricky.

It will be very difficult, I imagine. What are you doing to treat the WLD?

Well soaking with bleach and water - in theory. Iā€™m not confident we are staying in the soak at all long enough. At all. Itā€™s very dry now so at least heā€™s not in wet grass. (He was) Today we got BeGone and itā€™s a gel so easier to get in there and I feel like itā€™s better applied. Heā€™s super sweet, weā€™re just sorting out feet, scraped/fly eaten knees and leading.

Our vet was just out and gave us an idea for fly control. Itā€™s really bad this year because we had a mild winter and too much rain. Tony, our mini donk, has a few little scabs, but heā€™s coping fairly well. We use fly parasites and fly spray twice daily. The vet suggested UltraBoss instead and to buy two pairs of XXXL zebra patterned leggings. Use those to cover his legs and attach them over his shoulder and rump to hold them up. With fly boots over them, he should be covered and they should stay in place.

I picked up a container of the Endure Roll On a couple weeks ago and it seems to be helping. I roll it on her legs above her fly boots every AM and knock on wood, she doesnā€™t seem to be getting bitten up as badly and the older spots have healed.

Regular Endure spray doesnā€™t seem to make a lick of difference, so I am surprised this seems to be helping even more than Swat.

How do the leggings work? Meaning how do I do this? I watched some videos from a rescue showing how they cut them for the front legs, and Iā€™ve seen photos and video of some wearing tights and leggings on the front, or all fours, but I still donā€™t get how to cut them, attach and get them on the front and back legs. No explanation of how it is done helps me. I can see how they tie the front to the back, but the rest is a mystery. I have zero ability to comprehend 3 dimensions. I even went out and bought the tights hoping that I could figure it out but I didnā€™t.

Right now I am doing diaper cream all over from knee/hocks to the hoof, plus fly boots. I do the whole application every other day, top up on the knees and hocks in between. It has worked pretty well. She really isnā€™t too enthused when she sees me.

Yes please - an example of the tights would be great. Iā€™m not convinced they would work for us - McGraw (the mini) is a true little menace, but I would be willing to try. As for the boots I have nothing to report. Clayton was able to be trimmed and our farrier was able to get him cleaned up a good bit. With twice a day hoof picking and BeeGone heā€™s come a long way. Iā€™m enjoying this thread!
