So.....skunks.

I now officially hate them. Both of our dogs got blasted late last night and everything stinks. I’m not sure if they actually killed it or just got sprayed, but it must have happened near the house because everything. EVERYTHING. stinks. The yard, the barn, the cars. Inside our house. I swear my clothes smell like it, I’m paranoid sitting here at work.

Surprisingly I only found one thread on this from 2010. The suggestions were baking soda/dawn/hydrogen peroxide, or tomato sauce. Are those still the best options? How in the name of all that is holy am I supposed to get this damn stench out of my house? We have carpet! Help me.

I think there is a special type of Nature’s Miracle for skunk. I have been very successful with Nature’s Miracle for cat pee smell. It’s an enzyme product. I would recommend that for the carpet. I don’t know if it is okay to apply to dogs.

The baking soda /dish dawn /hydrogen peroxide works good no tomato sauce needed. Wash dog with mixture rinse let dog dry. Then repeat a second time it will pretty much eliminate the skunk odor. The house part use Febreze, spray the heck out of carpets and everything else that stinks of skunk. Good luck !

What a nightmare! I agree that the dog wash works…for outside, try hiding down grass and outside surfaces. Takes a while bit it will dilute the smell

Luckily we’ve got a massive storm headed our way so the rain should help.

I commuted with a woman who got home one night around 11 p.m. and found her beloved pooch had tangled with a skunk. There was a 24 hour CVS store nearby, so she headed down there and bought as much Massengill douche as they had. The guy at the counter apparently looked at her a little weird. It did, however, work extremely well.

I think its the beginning of skunk mating season so they are on the move.

Most of my farm dogs learned to avoid skunks once they got sprayed once but the dachshunds never learned.

Also, there’s a product called Skunk Off that’s super handy and works pretty well. You put it on the dog and my memory is that you don’t even rinse the dog…it’s a clear gel-type stuff, not too thick. We bought some off Amazon and keep it under the kitchen sink because, well, we have a Russell terrier. Doesn’t take much goo to help with the stench, but we found every time the dog gets wet for the next several months, a bit of the skunk odor clings to the dog.

Home Depot carries some great skunk deodorizer. For some reason my pony is constantly screwing with the black and white creatures and getting sprayed.

I have used the Massengill douche. It works better if it is name brand. Use the vinegar and water. Douse the dog, leave on, towel dry. They smell like salad but it works.

Ugh, the skunks. They have invaded the barn where I board and everything reeks. The owners are very hands-off when it comes to disrupting any sort of wildlife, so they won’t do a thing about them.

Are there any products we can spray around the barn to discourage them? I looked on Amazon and the reviews are mixed.

Good luck. I tried everything except the douche. My house smelled for weeks after. The dog smelled for months. And it got worse everyone she got wet.

My husband still holds it against me. Cause I let her in the house. But it was dark out, I heard her yipe and heard a squeal. She came running to me and I saw blood. I had no idea what she bit/attacked at that point. And in my defense we have coy-wolves back there. Didn’t smell it until after she was in the house. By then it was too late to save our hall carpet.

TECNU POISON IVY WASH!!!

Skunk spray is an oil based chemical which is why soap and water won’t take it off. Guess what, so is urushiol the chemical that is poison ivy. You need mineral spirits to dilute an oil whether its oil based paint, poison ivy or skunk spray. Tecnu’s base is mineral spirits. The bottle also claims it can be used for skunk spray so they claim it.

My German Shorthair Pointer was sprayed good last year. We used the Tecnu, and after one long vigorous bath using lots of product we could no longer detect the scent. Seriously. It was magic.

Get it at your local pharmacy. We now keep it on hand because the GSP is not exactly smart. She has taken it in the face three times now and we are no longer optimistic she has a learning curve.

Good luck!

She may have a learning curve, maybe just not the one you imagined. She’s gonna nail these suckers that keep spraying her in the face with that nasty, stinging stench

Natures Miracle Skunk Remover is the best that I’ve found. You can get it off Amazon (but you need it NOW). Tractor Supply carries it. The baking soda/hydrogen peroxide/dish soap does help quite a bit. I don’t remember the ratio but you can find it on line. Of course most dogs get sprayed in the face so be very careful in that area.

Sounds like it’s too late to warn you to NOT bring them into the house. You will need to wash everything they touched. Including wiping down walls. Of course anything fabric. I’ve added Natures Miracle Skunk remover to a load of laundry that had the wretched smell and that worked. It was either that or throw it all way.

I hate to tell you, water will not take the stench away. In fact, even after treatment when your dogs get wet they will smell again a bit.

The earlier you treat them with the mixture the better. But even days later Nature’s Miracle or the other mixture will help.

I found out (when it was all I had handy) that L’Oreal Kids Shampoo works well on skunk stink on horses and dogs. For in the house (because the dog ALWAYS managed to run into the house after being sprayed), one of those jars that contains scent absorbing beads helped a lot. I always found them at Vitamin Cottage but I’m sure other places have them as well.

We smell skunks around our house many, many nights. I do not have any dogs so I do not have that problem, but it still smells up the house somewhat.

It used to bother me until I realized, that back off the main road as my land is, the smell of a skunk around the house may deter criminals from trying to get into my house. Nowadays I call these skunks my “watch skunks” since few people want to end up being sprayed by a skunk, and I can live in peace even if it does smell a bit some days.

At least your cat did not attack a skunk…three times in three weeks…try bathing skunk off a cat belly…

Treat the farm for grubs. Skunks love grubs. My friend was having problems with her dogs getting sprayed. She had her farmette treated for grubs and the skunks moved on. I think she used Milky Spore
