So what size blankets do your horses wear?

So when I moved out to South Dakota I brought all of my blankets with me (between coolers and turnouts I have 15 for one horse ). My reasoning was that if I wanted to outfit the cowhorses I could maybe rig something up. Turns out they all fit in size 78, same holes on the front buckles and I only have to adjust the belly straps about 3 inches.

I was pleasantly surprised because they’re fairly different builds. My TB is 16.3 and kind of narrow and short coupled. The two older QHs are both 15.2, but one is quite short coupled and the other is much longer backed. The biggest surprise is the younger QH, who is 14.1 and super super wide. His butt kind of hangs out of a 78 and he’s currently in one of the 81s. He’s the one who needs to have the belly straps loosened.

So what size blankets do your horses wear and what builds do they have?

I have a 16.2 SF who is fairly lightly built for a wb. He wears an 81-82

15.3 and change. Wears 80/81

16.2 Hanorian mare. Wore 76 until last winter but with a great muscling plan this year, she now has a new wardrobe full of 78 blankets.

78" blanket fits:

17.1 TB
16.3 TB
15.1 chunky monkey QH.

So you never know.

15.2 ballerina build (slender and fine boned) 1/2 Andalusian 1/2 Appendix QH

Size 72 blanket.

15.1 STOCKY QH gelding and 16.1 feminine TB mare both wear 75"s. Although I am buying any new blankets for her in a 78", as she’s only five and still bulking out. He cannot go to a 78" without looking silly, but can bump down to a 74".

And then there’s the precious 13h narrow-shouldered pony who wears anywhere from a 62-66" depending on brand.

Mine all wear an 80/81:

  1. 17.1h TB gelding - typical TB build
  2. 17.1h WB gelding - built like a brick wall
  3. 16.2h WB mare - very average body size
  4. 15.3h (long-backed) WB mare - built like a 17h horse whose legs are too short (IOW, a “dachshund” build). She always gets the belly straps let out (don’t let her know I said that out loud).

The only exception to my blanket sizing is my small pony. He doesn’t wear a blanket. Good thing since I’d have to find a way to fit him into an 81

14.O QH pony mare robust is a kind word for her  she is in a 72/75 depending on the cut

16.1 TB mare all legs short coupled wears a 78

13.2 haflie 65 sturdy thick pony build

15.2 Dutch mare 78 fairly refined longish back

15.3 dutch mare 80 same as above … matter of fact dam of above

My 15.2h beefy, long bodied Polish Arabian wears a 76-78. Very big chested–some of us ladies identify with having to buy clothes to fit the chest first.

Our stocky 36" mini wears a 44.

Both my AQHAs wear 78s.
One is short, built like a rhino and short backed.
The other is 2-3" taller, longer backed and nowhere near as thick.

It’s nice having them both in the same size because I don’t have to check blanket size before tossing one on either horse.

But a while back when I had a horse wearing a 78 and the other wearing an 84-86 it looked pretty funny when I threw the wrong blanket over the wrong horse, LOL! Didn’t happen too often though, there’s a noticeable weight difference when picking up such different sizes.

One 16.3 Irish sport horse … Looonnnng in the back, 86
One 16 hand Dutch cross, 80

15.1 h QH, slight build for the breed, fits a 76" in most brands

15.3 TB-72
15.3 TB-78
16.1 TB-78
16.3 WB-78
17.1 WB?-81

My 15.2h mare with large LARGE shoulders fits in 72" (weatherbeeta) and 75" in Rambos…

My 16hh tb wore a 78. The odd time and 80 or 76
My 16.2hh WB wears a 76. He usually swims in a 78 so if they don’t have a 76 I usually opt to size down rather than up.

Appaloosa/thoroughbred, 16h, size 82
Percheron/Quarter Horse, 17h, size 86 draft-cut blankets/sheets

Saddlebred: 16.1 narrow build. Size 76
QH: 15.3 Kind of stocky. Not a bulldog type. Size 78
QH: 15 compact Size 70

16.2 Hano/TB/Friesian (yeah…) VERY fine boned and short backed. Size 72. He’s all legs and neck. He also wears a cob bridle and a 44" girth. Here I thought I was moving up to a big horse, and he wears smaller stuff than my pony did!

16.3 Appendix QH. Wide barrel (my saddle is a wide tree), large shoulder, lots of neck but short backed.

He wears a 78 in the Rambo line.
