16h qh gelding, 82 or 84, depending on the blanket
14.2 Paso Fino, very fine boned, wears size 69. And the turnouts are all Loooooong on him!
15 h ArabX - 69/70.
Sold his 72 as it looked like he was playing dress up in his big brother’s clothes. Having to let the belly straps out a little this year. He also wears a 22 girth. Now, if he’d just deliver that foal he’s carrying around.
15.3 MFT mare built like a Mack truck - 78"
15.2 Arab, also pretty built - 78"
16.2 TB all legs and short back - 78"
16.1 TB pretty leggy but with a long-ish back - 81"
16.2 h.h. Arab/Appaloosa, about 1,300 lbs. Big boned, but base narrow due to Arab part. He wears a 78", same as my late old TB/Appy, who was also 16.2, NOT base narrow, but more lightly (TB) built. My old event horse (also an Appy - I detect a pattern here) was HUGE - 16.3 and long as a bus. He wore an 82" to 84" depending upon the brand (84" in Big D’s intended for QH built horses). My very first Appy, also an eventer, was stoutly built and abuot 16 hands. He also wore an 80" (I think he took it up in WIDTH!!! LOL)
15.2hh quarter horse mare, about 1300lbs, size 82.
13.2hh quarter horse(pony?) filly, about 900 lbs, size 68.
Both QHs, but couldn’t be any more different from each other!
This is an interesting thread and I’m finding that the terms “lightly built”/“chunky” don’t match at all with blanket size. I have to assume we all have different definitions of “fine” and “chunky”.
14.1hh stocky 850lb Morgan: 72
14.2hh thinner 800lb Morgan: 70 or 72 depending on blanket (he doesn’t have a chest so the boobies have trouble holding up some brands)
17.1hh TB/1300lb elephant: 78
81"-82"
16.2 hand TB x Appy Mare. Wears a 54" girth
Don’t know, but when using the measurement of taping from center chest to the dock, it will give you a measurement - but I found with the brand I use
a size two inches bigger was a more comfortable fit for her big WB shoulders.
I’m finding it varies widely with the brand and model. My narrowish 16.1 TB mare takes a 76 or 78. She swims in one Greenhawk 78 blanket, the Greenhawk 78 cooler is too small, but the Greenhawk 76 rainsheet fits her perfectly as does the 78 Rambo Wug.
She just fits into the Centaur 78.
My tank of a 16 hand TB gelding (big shoulders and big barrel) is an easy keeper. He can’t fit into the 78 Wug and–ahem–barely fits into the Greenhawk 78 anymore.
16h TB - 78 or 80, depending on brand.
Actually, I’m ashamed to admit this, but I actually don’t know how tall he is. 16h is a guess. He was 15.2 when I got him, and he has grown a LOT. He’s at least 16h…can’t imagine he is too much bigger than that. I should really just measure him. It is weird that I don’t really know.
15.2hh stocky Saddlebred mare: 75-76"
16.2hh refined Oldenburg/Saddlebred gelding: 78"
2 Morgans. 15hh Lippitt wears a 75, but could probably do a 72 (they are both in Weatherbeetas).
16hh and still filling out wears a 78, but just. He could go the next size up easily. He’s not quite as thick as my Lippitt, but stretchier in build.
Good Lord, I call my one gelding a moose all the time and apparently I’m not kidding. He’s a 16.2 appaloosa, big-boned/big-bodied and looks kind of warmbloody. He wears an 86.
I also have a 16.0 4 year old who is all legs and no body, he’s like sitting on a rail. He measures a 78, give or take.
The two who are around 15.3 and round-barreled are somewhere around an 80, if they ever had to wear a blanket.

I agree! Here are pictures of my TB (medium build) and the pony (super chunk) that wear the same size blanket. I dread to think what size the pony would wear if he were the same height as the TB.

Together…chestnut in background is the smallest blanket-wise in the herd, but not by much. https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=10153174364675038&l=5814321b22
My two wear the same size–75. My QHx gelding (16.0hh when his feet get long) is a bit shorter but very stocky (especially in his old age.) My young OTTB gelding (16.1hh and almost all legs) is taller and has a longer body, but he’s narrow as a fence post. They can share blankets if they have to.
My mom’s OTTB gelding is tall, long and stocky (not as stocky as my QHx.) He wears a 78, so he doesn’t get to share blankies.
I have 3 that range in height and build that all fit in the same wardrobe. Tis lovely
17.3 Holsteiner, 88
14.1hh and STOCKY - wears a 72 in most brands, but takes a 75 in Saxon. He still fits the 72" cooler I bought when he was a yearling to teach him to blanket (back when I first knew him/worked with him, long before he ended up being mine) it’s just on the middle holes in the chest instead of being cinched up tight, haha
15.3 h. Kentucky Mountain Saddle horse, who is full bodied. 16.1 h. OTTB mare, who is a 5 on the weight scale. Both of them wear a 76. I was shocked that my larger mare did not need at least a 78, but I will take it! All of those extra blankets that I collected over the years are going to good use.
