So what size blankets do your horses wear?

I have a 15.2 average sized Appendix mare. She wears a 75 in Rambo and either a 76 or 78 in other brands.

16.3 Appendix - 80
16.2 OTTB - 78…he could probably even fit a 76 since he’s so narrow.

My 14.1 quarter pony (RIP) wore a 72.

A couple of people posted girth sizes…after seeing the ranges of sizes/builds for blankets, I’m curious about girth sizes…may have to do a spin off.

No wonder I can usually find cheap blankets, you guys have all the big ones & the stores are stuck with little ones that fit mine.

15.2 ASB (rip) - 68"
17.2 ASB - 74"

16.3 average TB gelding - 80"/81" in most brands, 78" Rambo
15.1 wide Morgan gelding - 78" in most, 75" Rambo

Mine is a fine-boned Morgan, about 15 hands and ~900 pounds. In Rambos, she takes a 72. In everything else, a 74 or 75 and the shoulders tend to be too big, so I like the Schneiders blankets with the velcro adjustments at the shoulders.

15.1 1150 lb Haflinger wears an 82. He has a couple 80s that his butt sticks out of, and he technically measures into an 84 (yikes!). He always has problems in the shoulder area of the blankets. He needs something with the really high shoulder gussets. He’s not fat…he’s just HUGE! Big chest and shoulders, longish back.

16.2 Dutch WB, weight fluctuates, pretty much a perfect 78, but since that size seems most popular and is usually sold out, ends up wearing an 80 since that’s all I could get.

17.1 Dutch WB, fairly light build now that he’s 25 and retired, was in 84s when he was competing, but an 82 works better for him now. Just replaced his 84 with an 82 because it was just hanging off of him (and it was in pretty bad shape).

17.3 Dutch WB, good weight, is in the 82s that belonged to my now-deceased 16.3 draft cross, and they fit him really well. He might be able to go to an 84, but since the draft cross’ blankets were almost new when he died, he’ll stay in them until they need replacing.

My now-deceased 15.2 Friesian mare was a perfect 76.

I have seven APHA horses and one AQHA broodmare.

My two 2017 fillies are currently wearing 68-72’’ blankets.

My 2016 filly is growing out of her 78’’ blanket.

Two of my broodmares wear 78’’; the AQHA broodmare wears an 80’’.

And my two show geldings (in my avatar) are both 84’’. They’re also the reason I need to buy a new trailer, since I can’t get the dividers closed in my slant unless they suck it in.

Five year old thread…

I have four horses that are 16 - 16.1 and think it’s funny that they wear 72 - 81!

It depends on the brand. For example, I’ve got 2 blankets and 2 sheets, all in size 84 (purchased, over time, for 2 draft mules) in 4 different brands and every one fits differently. I’ve also got an 86, purchased many years ago for one of those draft mules, that is too small for him.

The QH, who is 15.3, had one blanket that fit well, a Pessoa in size 78, but it fell apart at the end of the year last year. He’s now wearing one of the 84s, a Rockin’ SP brand from SmartPak, (a hand-me-down from the mule) and, while it is certainly a bit too long, it fits better than you might think. If I didn’t live in Florida, I’d buy one that fits better, but since I rarely use it, I haven’t yet bothered.

15.3 draft cross - I have him in 76’’ but he filled out a bit since last year and probably needs 78’s now!

15.2 Arabian - 72" and wears a 48" girth. She could probably even wear a 70". She’s mostly leg!

It wasn’t a requirement, but all of mine have worn 78-80. Dutch WB mare, 16.1; same for her daughter; 16.2 Swedish WB gelding, more stocky in build; 16.2 Hanoverian mare, sometimes fits better in the 80".

Our place has just PREs and blankets are mostly 78

All in Horseware Rambo…
14.3h Haflinger/Welsh Cob: 75"
16.2h TB: 81"
17.1h Hanoverian No. 1: 81"
17.1h Hanoverian No. 2: 84"

The cob x is a Silver Dapple fireplug, as broad as he is tall. Adorable, no matter what he’s wearing, including a thick coating of red clay.

The thoroughbred is looooooong and gangly. Extensive wardrobe to preserve calories and keep mud at bay. Works 80% of the time (see Han No. 1, and red clay).

Han No. 1 is the “new” sport model warmblood. All legs and short, muscular back. Removes cribbing collars, bell boots, and clothing from anyone who holds still long enough. Can also take his own clothes off. Without damaging them. Most of the time.

Han No. 2 is the late-model warmblood. Not the true artillery horse, but still massive in all directions. Always has clean clothes neatly in place because he needs to impress the girls in the next pasture and is King of the Hill (and so immune to Han No. 1’s sartorial adjustments).

All 3 of my ~16.2 hand tbs wears/wore an 81 Horseware, as does my 16.1 hand draft cross. Unfortunately the last horse I bought was a 4 YO 15.3 hand scrawny warmblood cross. I thought he would grow into a 78, which was what I bought him. Now going on 7 he has filled out a lot and grown about an inch, but he could still probably wear a 75. It was annoying to have to buy all new blankets, since I had built up a large collection of 81s. (On the bright side, the custom saddle I bought my tb right before I had to retire him fits, so I really shouldn’t complain!).

17h Dutch gelding in 87" blankets.
