Old thread but I will add my horses. Our group are all Cleveland Bay Partbreds, some older, some young ones maturing. They are kind of like Oreos, in being so similar in size and build. My collection is size 84 for the 5 older, mature horses. They have a Sporthorse build in being full-bodied, deep girths, extremely short backed, standing 16,2 to 17H. Horseware Amigos fit well, along with the one Rambo the older horse wears below 20F.
The 2 mares and young gelding are still filling out, so they fit 82 or 84 Amigos right now. They are between 16-16.2H, but only 4 and 6. They should match the older horses when mature, in having short backs, muscular filled out in a sport horse type body, deeper girths. They may gain height too, but stay 17H or just under.
My old Western horse was a fooler, needed a tape measure to believe her sizes. She only stood 14.2H, was sleek muscled not QH bulky, short backed, probably 900# when fit, App breeding with no color She wore a 78 blanket perfectly! It needed a long drop to cover her deep girth. She wore a 72 as a yearling, didnāt fit her long!
I have noticed our horses seem to measure the same in girth and blanket sizes. It came up when measuring them to order harness. The old Western horse also measured the same sizes for girth and blanket. She was our Pony Club example, teaching kids to measure for sizes before purchasing horse equipment. Though short, she wore a 5 1/2" bit with a Cob headstall, yealing halter. Proportioned nicely, no one ever guessed her sizes correctly.
Has anyone else ever noticed that same girth and blanket size measurement on their horses?
My 15.3 slim build TB wears a 74, 75 in Horseware.
My Araloosa is 16.2 and weighs in around 1,300, and he is big boned, but he is base-narrow because of his Arab sire. He wears a 78, the same as my previous Appy/TB cross, who was also 16.2, wider chested but lighter boned. He probably weighed only 1,000 lbs. I did have a near-17 hand Foundation bred Appy who was as long as a bus (but boy could he jump!). He probably weighed about 1,450, and depending upon the brand, wore anything from an 80 to an 84.
My six year-old KWPN is still in last yearās 81/82, but Iām fairly sure he will end up in an 84.
17.2 hh WB: 86-89 depending on the brand
17.0 hh QH (hunter): 82-84 and sometimes an 86 because heās ridiculously long
16.3 hh TB: 81-82
16.1 hh WB: 81-82
16.0 hh WB: 78-80
14.2 hh Pony: 72-74
14.0 hh QH pony: 76-78 (sheās a tub of lard lol)
11.1 hh donkey: 56-60 depending on the brand
My very narrow 17.1 hh TB wears between a 78-81 depending on the brand. Heās fairly long, but he doesnāt fill blankets out because heās so narrow.
My old 15.1-2 hh QH wears a 75-78" depending on brand. Heās quite long and has the Oakland Booty situation going on, but is fairly slab-sided.
My sisters 14.2 hh QH wears a 72-75" also depending on brand. Sheās a very easy keeper and also has a huge butt.
My sisters 14.1 hh QH wears a 69-70", sheās quite short coupled, and has a smaller butt than the other two QHs, but she does have well-sprung ribs. Most of her blankets are pony blankets, because normal blankets go down past her knees
17.1 ish Oldenburg x Belgian draft, tall with big shoulders. Wears an 87 in Rambo but can get away with 84 in Weatherbeeta
15.1 Appy mare and 16hh draft/TB both wear 81"-82". Blankets brands include Rambo, Dover Northwind, Weatherbeeta, Smartpak Ultimate (since different brands run often run different). Appy mare is somewhat substantial and long-bodied, draftX has stout bone structure but is a uphill, TB build, not wide. Itās nice they both wear the same size!
18.1 Dutch WB big bodied squeezes into 87" blankets, except Rambos- he canāt fit into them they run too small
15.2hh Arabian/Saddlebred mare wears a 72" blanket⦠sheās fairly short-backed with a substantial butt for an Arab and well-sprung ribs. She could probably even squeeze into a 70" since the 72" has some extra room.
16.2 Foundation Quarter horse. Wears an 81.
17.3 Clydesdale & 17.3 Percheron wear an 87.
My 13.2 hh Arab mare with a big butt takes a 72". And it just fits.
I have two TBs that are 15.2h and medium builds. They wear 76.
6 yr old TWH gelding who is 15h: 69" or 72" in Horseware
8 yr old TWH gelding who is 15.2h: 72"
15 yr old TWH gelding who is 15.3h: 75"
