SoloShot2 - tips? updated use? have questions for other SoloShot-ers

Reread the info regarding the distance the SS3 can track indoors and it’s limited to 100 feet.
I sent some video of how it stops tracking etc to customer support and they are going to send me a new base and tag. Just for cost of shipping (unfortunately that will cost me $100 or so).
Pretty generous though!!!
Awesome! Glad their responses was to just replace completely, than making you go through tons more experimenting. Hope it arrives quickly.

Arrived the other day! ooh so new lol. It’s first run will be today at my instructors place, where my other one rarely worked. It’s also overcast… good test as any!

Does anyone have an issue with focus? I bought the package with the Sony CX240 and while it pairs and tracks well, it is always fuzzy. Not unrecognizable, but far from clear. I have done an update and when setting up I focus on an object and then pair the components from that exact location. I am focusing on a light pole which is quite narrow, but the instructions give a goal post as an example. Plus, it does not appear that it is focusing on some other object as there is no distance that is clear in the video.

I have not had a problem with focus at all. When you focus on the centering object is it zooming all the way out after you connect the camera controller?

New soloshot worked fine!
Make sure you go easy on the buttons, I don’t think they are robust enough and it could have been that my + button got a bit jammed on my old unit. So press gently to preserve them!

Focus must be a camera problem?? What is it like if you use it on it’s own??

Hope it went well with your fixed equipment today, flight!

I haven’t had any focus problems. If I’m at a long distance from the camera, it can be a bit fuzzy - but I expect that, give that I didn’t buy a crazy HD camera to begin with. I have the CX405 that came with my SoloShot2 bundle. As an example, this is a video from today where I was riding a good 100+ feet away from where I set up the base - so, the camera was at a significant zoom to record me the whole time. I usually have it just outside the arena I’m riding in, so I am only 15’-60’ away.

(sorry about the fence obstructions! we planned for a jump lesson in the arena, but it was soppy from the rain - so impromptu jaunt to the XC field on the other side of the arena)

You might want to try something more “obvious” to pair onto. I try to use the intersection of a jump pole to a standard, or the top step of a mountain block. Also, I find that there is a lot of “give” in the camera once I have it really zoomed in, so I’m careful about holding the camera steady with one hand while I connect the camera controller cord. It’s not easy, but I can at least keep the camera pretty much looking at the specific spot (there are a couple seconds after the cord is connected where you can adjust if needed, before it starts to zoom out). When I didn’t, I found I wasn’t always centered in the frame (since the camera probably had actually zoomed into a spot a foot or so away from where I paired the tag). As atlatl said, hold the camera steady until the camera controller has made it completely zoomed-out. Hope that helps!

You’d think the camera should auto adjust it’s focus on the subject anyway, but yep I check on the zoom out if it’s still centred.

Was going to ask how come you’ve got it so far away MR! But then read the reason why

I put mine in the arena… and ride right in front of it… the camera can’t physically zoom out to fit me in when I’m that close but it keeps up:

I love this! The indoor option is just what I’ve been waiting for! Thank you for all this information and videos/photos you’ve posted!..I think I’m going to order the Soloshot3 with the Optic65 camera. My Sony camcorder is not supported. A few questions…

Can you put it in center of arena on tripod and ride around, do figures, and it will just keep spinning and tracking?

How does the camera work…choose video or photos? Can you take video and photos at the same time, or set it up so it will take a mix of both?

Where do you put your tag? Do you wear the armband, purchase the waistband mount, or make your own?

Never mind. User error. I am an idiot.

I can relate  pretty much all my soloshot problems were user error.

An interesting acronym our computer support team uses; PICNIC: problem in chair not in computer…

On another note, I successfully used my soloshot2 to video a friend who was riding in a covered (canvas/plastic tarp type cover) area. I did have to move the base unit outside the cover, but it worked.

Yes, it should be able to spin around completely. The soloshot2 can.

I’d have to check with the soloshot3 info, about whether it can do stills and video. But I always find the quality of stills on a video camera crap. I set up my DSLR with Soloshot2 and had to put new software so it would do it.

Tag - more comfy with armband on arm. I’ve also put it on my wrist so I could press buttons for DSLR photos.

From what I’ve been reading the Soloshot3 can do stills (bursts I believe) and will have audio capabilities.

For those of you who pre-ordered, was there an option to pay through PayPal? Their website has posts as recent as November saying payment via PayPal was accepted, but I’m not getting that option…

I’m pretty sure I recall seeing that choice at check-out, but I paid with an AMEX, so I’m not 100% sure. Soloshot customer service is GREAT and usually responds within 24hrs, so you could just email them & I bet they’ll confirm either way ASAP.

Thank MR! I emailed last night, but I’m assuming the office is empty due to the holidays.

Yes, there was a Paypal option and I used it to pre-order the SS3 in September.

Did not see PayPal. Wished I had opened thread sooner. Just told DH that he did not have to worry about anniversary gift this year! Waiting patiently…

I’m guessing I’ll get a response tomorrow. Really hoping it’s a glitch with the system or if it isn’t, they’ll still accept PayPal (and hopefully honor the 35% discount as it’ll be decreased).

Ugh, y’all are the worst. I just placed my order for the basic bundle and indoor accessory. It was tough to justify but I ride alone 98% of the time and I need to be better about not letting my position limit my horse’s ability.

You won’t be disappointed!
