something to kill adult Onchocerca? 19 CASE STUDIES POSTED-PAGE 58

The concern over high kill off was part of my concern too. Particularly in regard to the eyes.

The yellow horse already seems to have several issues that I have not yet fully interpreted. Flinging his head and being headshy and not wanting to be touched… he has come a long, long way, but will have periods of reverting back to his survivalist mode.

I’m hoping that the deworming protocol will get rid of the creepy crawlies and help him settle a little more. He REALLY wants to be in my pocket; has good confidence (does NOT have to always be with the other horses); learns pretty quickly.

I can’t wait to update after the second round tomorrow…

It certainly could not hurt to do a regular dose first. Do not underdose any dewormer, tho’. It can create resistance and that is the last thing you want.

FWIW, I never seem to have any eye issues after deworming but maybe I have just been lucky.

In this case, I would probably single dose with Equimax every 7 days for 4 weeks. Watch for any eye issues. If none, then double dose Equimax to finish the suckers off.

EDITED TO ADD: What protocol of daily care/prevention are you doing for the ERU? When my late app mare was alive, she lived on 25 human aspirin a day to keep down inflammation.

Do we know anything more about Doxy and how it relates to all of this?

Anyone tried it?

Reporting in…

I did the double dose Equimax on my itchy mare exactly two weeks apart and sadly, it didn’t work…

Went to the barn yesterday, gave her a good brushing and she was still “parrot lipping” when I curried her. No really particular spots, but mostly the dock of tail, withers, belly…

P.S. Her last dose was several weeks ago.

Well, certainly I have, inadvertently. I do a two week run of Doxy about every three months, I have chronic Lyme. Or do I?

Someone asked me from another forum-

Is the double dose safe for IR and Cushing’s horses.

Are there any precautions that must be taken.

I think you know the answer to that

Well, Blush got her second double dose today.

She rubbed the crap out of her tail while she was at CSU last night :frowning: I do hope this dose of Equimax stops the tail rubbing, because I don’t know what else to try. I feel like I’ve done EVERYTHING.

Would the presence of the symptoms in the summer more than the winter be consistent with onchocerca? Or fly allergy?

My poor guy has rubbed half his mane out now. I’m awaiting my equimax anxiously.

Simkie have you tried Scalpicin?

No, that’s actually something that I have NOT tried. Should I?

I’ve got to wonder if Blush’s butt rubbing is related to the hind end lameness she’s been struggling with. When we injected her hocks and it HURT, she really rubbed her butt, sat on the waterer, the whole 9 yards. I’m thinking maybe if we fix the hind end pain, we just might fix the rubbing. Thankfully, I think we’re actually seeing the light at the end of the tunnel on the lameness stuff.

Yes

Doubtful on a true “allergy.”

FINALLy made it on here, COTH and Dial up do not go well together. Any how, I double dosed the girls again on Wednesday and this morning I went out to feed and my poor 9 year old has some really large welts on her, mostly on her belly, shoulders and back end. She is also starting to shed her summer coat. Looks like she is itchy too cause she scraped a piece of hide off of her face above the eye.

My 6 year old has a few welts on her belly. But doesn’t seem itchy.

So I wonder, is this from the worming or is it from the new bottle of pirannha (sp?) bug spray that I used on them last night?

I took some pics but won’t be able to share those until Monday if anyone is interested. I’m feeling pretty terrible this morning :frowning:

Chocomare: Since my post was somewhat off topic, I have sent you a PM.

So, does anyone know why the DD causes the welts? I tried accessing an article that was posted here but it wanted me to pay $29.95 for it!!

My horse also broke out in welts the day after the second worming, worse than I ever saw him do, There was even a large one on his back, near his hip. I really feel it was related to the worming, a die off of the worms. I gave him benadryl but they pretty much went away with no bad affects in a few days. He is still looking so much better. Not 100% but I’d say 60-75% better than before the first worming. I am going to continue with a single dose of ivermectin 1x a week for 4 weeks to make sure I get any that are left behond. Or at least I hope to!

I gave Kit some Benedryl as well. I have azium as well but wanted to save that for a real emergency. Her welts are really big, not tiny things at all. There are a couple that are several inches long and several inches wide.

I just feel awful about it…

My daughter is home from school for the weekend and really noticed a difference in Impulsive’s tail…the hair has all grown in and I have not noticed any more rubbing.
As for Tucker, unfortunately no change with the face and sheath area, nor his habronema. But I am beginning to wonder if the face being so bad could be a reaction to NTW’s and not to the bugs…but right now we are so bad with bugs and flooding, I cannot really expect miracles…I will DD him again next week and keep doing that for a while.

The welts are the microfilia emerging from the body. They’re all shouting RUN AWAAAAYYYY!

Just for reference purposes, back in this long thread are two posts by “little D” that explain the reaction(s).
