So HandsomeBay… you did a DD at day 10? Of E’max?
Yes he improved about 80-90% and still IS improved from where he started-we just had a backslide.
Now to decide if I hit him again in a week for a 3rd double dose…or carry on with Power Pack.
Well a friend sent me here and all I can say is I really really hope this has been my problem all along.
I have 15 equines total five of which suffer from the itchies in varying degrees. I have LONG doubted the “allergy” diagnosis and I can tell you I have spent a kings ransom on supplements and potions.
So… last Thursday when I first heard about this I did one of my worst. So far he’s not had a bad break out which from what I’m reading could mean his infestation is deep. I did the other four today.
They all have the clasic signs of what is described here. I even have a mare with an unknown eye thing. Years ago I took her to UF for it and they all scratched their heads, offered up “immune response” as the diagnosis and sent me home with cyclosporine. This cloudy eye (strictly in the cornea) seems to come and go at will. I have noticed her rubbing it on the corners of posts and boards. Her eye doesn’t tear or swell but the cornea gets hazey. Now I can’t help but wonder if this has been the issue since she also has all the classic other symptoms.
I’m going to make a page on my website with before and after photos. I shot everyone today before treatment. I will keep our progress updated.
As I understood the original post it’s a DD then another DD a WEEK later then every two weeks if there is a persistant problem is that correct?
Wish us luck. I’ve been fighting this crud for too many years. I honestly thought I’d fallen into some weird immuno zone. We take extremely good care of our animals and it blows my mind they could have a parasite overload. I just don’t get it, but in a way I hope it’s the issue because I sure could use a break from these so called “allergies”.
By the way having suffered from eczema from the age of 2 up through 26 (I’m now 42) I can tell you that having skin issues that make you itch horribly will make you VERY mean!!! People have no clue how torturous it really is. I feel horrible for horses left untreated.
The second DD really seems to have a more noticeable effect than the first, from what I’m reading and what happened with my guy.
LMH I would definately give him some benadryl for a few days. I did it with my horse after the 2nd DD and it helped him a lot. I know at our Super Wal Mart they sell 100 capsules for $4. They are the powdered ones you can break open (although my strange horse ate them whole mixed up in his bucket of goodies). I give one per 100lbs of body weight. I did this am and pm on his worst days. Hope he feels better soon!
Glad you found us!
Protocol Is:
Double Dose Equimax. Wait 14 Days. Double Dose Equimax again.
If symptoms still persist, single dose Ivermectin weekly for another three-four weeks until non-symptomatic. If symptoms still persist, though, double dose Equimax again.

Yup - sure did. I couldnt stand to watch him suffer. He is 26 and is doing GREAT!!! Yipee
Thanks chocomare… not sure where I got a week from. I’m losing my mind.
I think I can bring myself to single dose my girl. I don’t know if I could stand another double dose right now. Poor thing
Cashela,
It might seem “cruel” but if the end result is getting rid of the chronic itching than a few days of being very itchy is worth it. Trust me… having has skin allergies most of my life (or at least more than the first half of my life) I can tell you if someone said “We can cure this but you will be miserable for a week” I would have BEGGED them for the treatment.
I’m sure my sister hated her chemo but it saved her life. Sometimes you do what you have to in order to make things better in the long run.
“Sweet itch” may be caused by midges aka “culicoides”. You may need to deal with eradication of these pests as well.
I spoke to my vet about this today and indeed some horses can have both going on…so if the double dosing is not working, then considering a true ‘midge allergy’ is next in line.
LMh, exactly.
I do still think it is interesting that I never have skin issues around here.
But one more thing - about those with big welts - the giant bomber flies are out, and when they bite, they can cause those.
Rio’s butt has about a dozen speed bumps on them
The bombers are second to satan this year.
They ATTACK julian-no matter where he is, the smell him and find him.
Seriously…all the horses are together and the bombers chase HIM.
I wonder why? Does he smell funny?
waiting
Waiting very impatiently for my shipment of EquiMax. Ordered 60 tubes.
Like Undertheson, I’ve had this gut feeling for several years and never thought of double dosing.
I’m sort of mid-way through an imumnization program on 2 horses and see no results from that so far.
Dick
My girl with the welts was definitely not caused by flies. She would have had them earlier and still. They have gone. The only thing I’m dealing with now is the giant patches of grossness on her rump.
Where is the Best Price for Equimax?
This certainly has me all convinced to do my whole herd with the double dose!
But since I have 20 horses I need to find the best price
Also… What about itchy foals? are they getting a DD also?

LMH How is Milo today?
If it is a midge allergy, then the fly sheet for the belly really does work. Keeps the midges off the belly.
It did help my boy tremendously.
Don’t know anything else that really works for that aside from steroids and chemicals.
Hope Milo is improving.
