Holy Moly…
Milo has his 3rd double dose yesterday-this time Ivermectin.
He has rubbed his mane and tail bloody and almost broke a wall off the run-in shed.
This is getting insane.

LMH - do you ever use QUEST in your rotation? (curiousity)
Are you giving anything for the itchies? See the Prednilisone vs Dex thread… even an antihistamine?
what to do?
Question: 2 weeks ago I dd’d w/ equimax my appy mare who, after reading through this thread, seemed to be a candidate. Within a couple days, the normal itchy lump she develops on the base of her chest (every summer…gets hard too), crusted up and got dandruf-like…and started to disappear. Hoorah!
However on Sunday she also came down with a bacterial infection (respiratory)…and is a coughing, snotty, feverish mare. Vet came out, she’s now on SMZ’s, and her fever is gone. She’s on the SMZ’s until next friday, the 26th, at the earliest.
At this point I do not feel comfortable double dosing her with the second equimax round. So, my question is… should i wait until she’s done with the antibiotics course? And if i do wait, do i need to start the 2 rounds of equimax all over again, because it would have been longer than 2 weeks span between the first and the second double doses?
If you treat one horse should you treat all pasture mates like regular worming?
I would wait till she’s done with the SMZs so as not to tax the body anymore than it already is. There shouldn’t be a need to “start all over” again tho. Just pick up where you left off.

It won’t hurt to hit everyone with a double dose and see what happens. They may be asymptomatic right now.
1.5x athelcide is part of the PPP routine

I would also like to see the 1.5x anthelcide more publicized by the manufacturer…[/QUOTE]
I bought everything for the PPP double dose regime, before I found out about the Equimax DD thing.
The Anthelcide at 1.5x dose is part of the PPP regime, which is:
I hope I have that right. I just finished the powerpack.
I also plan to do the Equimax DD later…just to be safe. Not sure how long to wait though…
Depends on the weight of the horse. Anything close to, or over 1250lb needs more than 1 tube a day.
That is how I do it. Apparentlythe Anthelcide at two weeks is a timing issue, not a class issue (the class of drug is the same).
I would wait 6-8 weeks to do the double Equimax, unless I had reason to do it sooner.
Yes, double dose (by weight)

You got that right, JB! I should know, considering we have a 2000lb Belgian, so doing the Powerpack was literally DOUBLE the expense! (ie - he got almost 2 tubes of the powerpack…which would be close to 4 doses for a lighthorse)
thanks for clarifying thankfully my Morgan is less than 1250 lbs
Update - it’s been 3 days
Yikes - what an incredible reaction. She’s lost most of the hair on her face, some on her neck, quite a bit on one shoulder and one entire butt cheek is bald!
The only other issue is that beginning yesterday, Hannah, the TB with the leg issues, her one leg is quite swollen again. Not unsound, not quite a stovepipe, but definitely swollen. Related?
Just did my 2nd double dose, and have already noticed considerably less itching of necks, bellies, and butts with my 5 since the first double dose of Ivermectin two weeks ago. Today was Equimax (which I ordered on-line at valleyvet.com for $10.95 each, free shipping :D). I ordered enough to do two dd of Equimax and will probably do one more dd in 2 weeks, just to make sure I got all the little NTW buggers. They have lived the high life way too long in my guys.
No issues at all for any of the gang. Mine were always clothed in ears-to-tail fly sheets, and in the stable during the heat of the day. They also get garlic power daily, which effectively discouraged stable flies and gnats and midges. Their coats are beautiful, shiny, and sleek.
Next year – a program of double dosing to see it if kills the annual summer-itchy-tail syndrome cold. If so, I can finally stop using the tail guards. I’ll continue to use the daily wormer, too.
Wow … this is my first post on this forum… I’ve read the entire thread…
I am soooo dealing with this mess right now … Had not dealt with it in YEARS until I got new horses last year. I didn’t recognize it last year until the filly lost her entire mane and about rubbed her face off! Then I started treating with ivermectin. (I’ve got pics from last year when I figure out how to upload!)
This thread gives me so much hope!
I do have a question… does anyone know why some horses react to the DD worming and some don’t? Do you think it has to do with the amount of infestation??
I’m afraid my filly will go freakin’ crazy if this itching gets any worse!
This has been the most exciting thing I’ve seen in forever (and I just went through hurricane IKE… LOL)
I’ll let ya’ll know when I start treatment and document with pics …
I bought some Equimax and read the information sheet that comes in the box. Under the safety heading it gives information about some of the test on tolerance they have done. In one test they gave 3-4 week old foals a 10X dose and observed some loose watery stools on some of the foals.
Another test gave “3x dose every two weeks throughout breeding, pregnacy and lactation, up until the foal was three months of age” Thats a lot of triple doses! They reported" An increase incidence of colic was observed in treated mares" and “in addition, elevations of GGT and AST were more frequent in the 3x treated mares”
this gives me a little comfort, since I’m only going to give a 2x dose now and maybe repeat only one more time. So I’m nowhere near the 3x dose repeated for 15 months like the mares in the test.
The information sheet also states.
“Swelling and itching reaction after treatment with ivermectin paste have occured in horses carrying heavy infections of neck threadworms”
From this statement it appears the ingrediant that is killing the threadworms is the Ivermectin, If thats the case why spend the extra money and take the extra risk to double dose with a product containing praziquantel (like EM does) when ivermectin is what is killing the bugs? Just do a 2x dose of an Ivermectin product.
That said, I dosed my gelding with Quest yesterday, which some of the post above reported as being more effective agains Neck Threadworms. I had a tube on the shelf at home and decided to use up what I had on hand. I will give it a couple of days to work and then give the EM that I purchased. I really can’t do a before and after photo. since his skin clears up every fall as his new hair coat grows in. So the after photo in 4-6 weeks would just show a nice wooly winter coat of hair
I’d love to delay the dose of Ivermectin a couple of week until after we have had our 1st frost and killed off the Bott flies.
Go with liquid Safe-guard - a good bit cheaper
yearling+ with sweet itch
Cal is a kiger/arab 15+ month old gelding that showed initial symptoms around the middle of June (I came home from an endurance ride to my pretty baby missing a 6" strip of mane, skin underneath gray and scaly.) I should preface this post by saying I always thought he had alot of dander in his mane. I used MTG on his hairless patch and it did partially grow back, really got on the fly sprays, (we live next to logging land in SW Washington - so a buggy dream come true!) This season we’ve had alot of warm weather followed by periods of rain and then immediately hot again, making things humid. My deworming schedule has been lax, I can see that from reading the posts, however, I’d just completed the Fenbendazole 5-day/DD on all 5 horses. Over the summer things went from bad to worse, I just couldn’t seem to get a handle on the itching. Poor baby rubbed the hair off his face, under his jaw, chest, tailhead (the least bad of the bunch) armpit wrinkles and ventral line up to his chest and which included sheath and inner thighs. I have tried anything I could think of. Garlic, Hydrocortizone creams, MTG, Equess spray, Bag Balm, Flax seed, you name it! About 2 weeks ago I started him on 1 Benedryl tablet crushed per day and ordered Equiderma lotion. I saw results, the hair is starting to grow back and the itching isn’t as intense, however, the weather is cooler at night now (we’re at 900’) and there hasn’t been any rain for at least 2 weeks. My friend forwarded these posts and I’ve read every one! I DD him with Equimax last night, gave him a Benedryl this AM as he was biting his tailhead when I went out to feed the morning. I just came in from the barn and didn’t see any welts, weeping, sores, etc. at this point, however, it’s only been 24 hours. His appetite is as good as usual, his chest was a bit flaky and there was dander back in his lower mane. My friend uses the Amigo Bug Buster rug (with fly spray built-in) spirulinia and Empower for his mule and keeps his itch “under control”, however, due to my deworming (or lack thereof) schedule as well as the posts/photos/before/after, I’m so hoping this helps! I feel like all the above ideas are only a bandaid for the real culprit/problem! One of the other horses has an itchy patch on his hip so it looks like the other 4 will also get DD’s as soon as I order them. Our local Wilco charges $16.99 per dose! I will update as time progresses!
Heidi and Kiger Caliente
Heidi: do keep us posted on your baby. I’d have to go back through, but I think you’re one of the few from the other side of the country who’s seeing the same thing. Will be interesting to watch.
Update from SoCal!!
Okay back with more update:
Case in review- 4 year old paint gelding. Has had this problem since he shed out as a yearling.
DD’ equimax, saw good overall improvement. Front legs cleared up, muzzle cleared up.
2nd DD equimax, huge breakout of welts in 24 hours. Worse I’ve ever seen. Was 60% better in a week, 80% better in two weeks.
Followed up with 1 dose ivermectin two weeks later and again in 7 days.
Horse was 95% cleared up, and no new symptoms appearing.
Tuesday (9/16, seven days from last single dose) decided to do one last DD of ivermectin to get them before fall and winter coat hits. Within 24 hours he had welts and itchy spots again. He now has spots all over again, after he just got all healed up, but I know it was good I wormed him again because obviously there were still more NTW’s to kill off.
I believe in about 2 weeks once all the hair has returned he will look 100%!!!
The welts after the last worming really proved to me this is/was his problem, and that is so awesome to know!
Wow! This is all so interesting! I kind of skipped this thread, because I never thought my guys had a “problem” and it was soooooo long. Well, I read almost the whole Book this morning!
I do have a question! I just wormed my horses Monday. Single dose, one got ivermectin, the other equimax (thats what I had left). Do I just worm again in a week? Same stuff for each again?
All this information really got me thinkin…my one horse has had this 1" x 1" kind of scaly patch on his neck, hair is kind of thin and if you look closely, the skin is kind of bumpy. Last week he had a pea sized lump, kind of like a hard pimple next to it. I really didn’t pay too much attention to it, but noticed a few days ago it was crusty and kind of oozy (dried) when he came in from outside. I tried to squeeze it (gross) but it was hard. I scrubbed it with a jelly scrubber and it took the scab off it (gross, I know) and I put ichthomal (sp) on it last night. Do you think this was related to worming him/worms? His coat and condition is gorgeous! He is a tough keeper though (HIGH MAINTENANCE!) as far as feed goes, he eats ALOT. Do ya think he has worms?? Worm him again?
Crikett,
If I got this right: he got the welts after double-dosing, the first time with Equimax and the second time with ivermectin. No welts after single dosing, right?
My 2yo has definitely been itchy since the second DD with EM, and last night some midline areas seemed to be peeling off. It’s hard for me to tell because I am also putting a salve on there and it might be the salve that is drying up and peeling off. I need to see him in the daytime, but that won’t be until this weekend.
I suspect I will do some single dose wormings too if it doesn’t look completely cleared.

Right! The worse set of welts was after the 2nd DD EM. He had them in places I’d never seen before!
