And of course we could be killing off something else altogether… that night with the parasitology book was chilling, to say the least
So I guess it would be helpful to know the length of the adult life cycle…
To the best of my knowledge, there is no documentation on any agent, other than intralesional formalin, that will kill the adults.
(Ivermectin at the labelled dose will, however, sterilize the adults)
That said, I would not be at all surprised if a higher dose of ivermectin might kill adults.
I have seen no evidence whatsoever that praziquantel has any effects on either microfilaria or adults.
Sterilizing sounds good;)
Thanks, for sharing that. I think I’m probably going to do a 1.5 on him first. I was just thinking last time I dewormed him I did double strongid for tapes, he handled that fine. So I don’t see why he couldn’t handle double iver.
I’ll check back here tomorrow, I have class tomorrow & 3 tests!!!
Off to study…
Try taking parasitology with a VMD/MD.
He always ended the lecture (and sent us off to lunch) with a slide of some hideous zoonotic parasite.
We realized we were all going to make it to graduation when we were able to eat pasta after one of Lenny’s lectures…
I read the adults can live 8-14 years
So this is not a one time issue.
Well damn.
Time to stock up on Ivermectin, kids. We are in this for the long haul!
I don’t think it is permanent.
I think you are right-it may sterilize them for a season…but at a life span of 8-14 years I bet they work it out!

So, if they adults aren’t going away anytime soon should I just build the double ivermectin with a 2 week later double (maybe double equimax down the road…if i’m feeling brave) into my yearly rotation?
or is this a “as the symtoms present themselves you should treat it” kinda thing?
I have no idea. I should think it would be seasonal…spring through fall when symptoms are present?
Hmmm, ok, so (not being snarky :)) why is it that some of the horses on this thread have been (supposedly) dewormed with ivermectin on a regular basis for years and years, but still have microfilariae? I mean, they had to have come from the adults, right?
Is it a resistance issue?
eta - oh, I see you say the sterilization isn’t permanent
You can’t automatically assume that, as pyrantel pamoate and ivermectin are 2 totally different classes of chemicals
Or they could have been reinfected.
Same way you don’t get permanent immunity to other nematodes from deworming on a regular schedule.
Jumping in here… my guy has had a few small hard lumps on his cheek area. Only on one side (left side) and they are right along the jaw line up towards his eye. 4 spots.
Last time Vet was out, he said probably a reaction to weeds in the field or something. So put Hydro cream on it. But they haven’t gone away. And it’s been probably 2 months. They don’t seem to bother my guy when you poke at them. But they are hard lumps so not bug bites. Dark pigment and hair is growing over them now.
Do you think the Equimax double dose would get rid of them? Would these “critters” be that far up?
He has recently shown some “flaky” patches in front of the girth area on his front legs (right in the “crook” area) too.
He does have a hard lump on his back to that just showed up. In the saddle area but a little further down from his top line. Could this be the same?
Thoughts?
Just as a side note… my guy is about 1225. So I’m assuming 2 full tubes then rinse/repeat in 2 weeks?
I just wanted to post an update on my guy. It recently occurred to me that all of his symptoms began soon after I purchased him, when he was single dosed with EM with the rest of our barn.
I had a feeling that I was dealing with a pretty massive infestation, so after studying the safety trials for EM, I decided to do a 3rd DD two weeks following the 2nd one. I am not suggesting this for anyone else, but it has definitely worked for me.
After the 2nd DD his hind end itchiness had mostly cleared up, but he was still rubbing his neck and chest raw in spots.
I did the 3rd DD two weeks later and got a HUGE reaction. Very large oozing welts on his neck and chest. Those have healed and the skin in those areas has peeled off.
He was still slightly itchy, so I followed up one week later with a single ivermectin. We are one week post ivermectin and he is almost itch free!! He is not rubbing himself anymore! I am going to do an ivermectin single dose again today.
He still has a swollen gland in his throatlatch on his itchier side. The vet is not concerned by it, but I can’t stand it. I am hoping that will resolve with the rest of his symptoms.
9/20 Update:
The painful welt itself is gone! Still a small pocket of edema right in the mane but no pain or heat in it at all. The crusty area is smaller and just looks like “rainrot” but is healing. No pain in that area either.
Covered it with some Corona to soften the skin and encourage the hair to regrow.
Double Dosed generic Ivermectin same day to keep on top of the critters.
TO EVERYONE FOLLOWING THE PROGRAM:
If you can update as I have done where you quote yourself and give dates. It makes finding and tracking each person’s updates much easier for me. Thanks!
Hello everyone I’m back, didn’t manage to log in since yesterday.
He’s absolutely back to normal, the girth lumps (which I somehow started thinking where NTW) are still there after my hefty dose, so I will now give him 2 weeks of lunging & if I feel brave enough bareback riding and see if we can rid them that way.
In all honesty to everyone on here, my first reaction after he coliced (if that’s what it was) was one of anger for letting myself getting carried away after reading things and then thinking I knew better then my vets so I was going to fix the problem myself.
I’m settled over it now. I truly don’t know why he coliced, it may not be related at all. It may have been a massive die off (although weird in a horse that had moxidectin only a few weeks ago and been de-wormed on regular schedule), or it may have been a reaction to a high dose praziquantel or it may have been completely unrelated.
How big is he? 18hh (call him M) and according to a regular weight tape he’d be just over 1400lbs, but this is absolutely not right, compared to my other guy who is 18.2hh (call him R) but very slim and for sure a lot lighter then M, but who comes up over 1600lbs on weight tape. I gave 3740lbs, double dose for 1800lbs and a little more. And I keep thinking that may have been a lot…
Anyone has a big bodied 18hh horse and knows how much their horse weighs for sure?
I do however continue to have this little voice in the back of my mind telling me : but what ‘if’ this was a massive worm die-off then I really ought to de-worm again in 2 weeks time. I will discuss once more with my regular vet who’s out next week.
Worms, not an exact science, … so frustrating…
Sorry everyone if I sounded a bit upset in my previous post. I was just tired after been up a day & night and of course worried. He’s fine again, hopefully he’ll be the only one having some weird reaction.
He, he - I just found the following in the description of the apple flavored ivermectin on the SmartPak website: “Also controls Summer Sores caused by bots, and dermatitis caused by neck threadworms.”
Never noticed that it said that before!
Ordering the stuff to DD today… I’m going the ivermectin route, because, well, it’s cheaper, and $$$ is tight from the Spark-plug’s vet bills. Will post updates.
I board a Selle Francais who sticks a bit over 17.3 and he was weighed at the vet school back in June. I walked him across the scale myself and he weighed in at 1,850 pounds on the dot. This guy is built big in every way though.
Our 17.3 hd weighs about 2000lbs+

Lieslot - I’m glad your big boy is OK. We also havea VERY big boy who is pushing 18 hands. He’s a Belgian and built alot bigger than your horses, but he weighs at least 2000 lbs.
Glad to see another post about a 17.3 hand horse weighing over 1800lbs at the vet’s scales.
MOST people grossly underestimate thier horse’s weights. Weight tapes are NOT accurate at all.
My own not-quite-16 hand Morgan mare weighs almost 1300lbs when she’s at her bulkiest. She takes a 54" girth (close contact saddle) and a 78" blanket
Here’s the Morgan (15.2+ hds)

Here’s the Belgian (17.3+ hds) Who wears a 92/94" blanket and takes a 48" Western Cinch

And how do you guys wrap your legs around your 18+ hand horses? Looks like your feet are at or below their elbows!? Here’s how far MY LEGS go around our 17.3 hander!!??? LOL
