something to kill adult Onchocerca? 19 CASE STUDIES POSTED-PAGE 58

I just stumbled on this and am really wondering if one of my mares is having this problem. She does not have major skin problems but can’t stand the bugs, she also gets some bumps on the midline of her belly and will get down on the ground and itch herself by rubbing her belly on her hind leg that is tucked under her. I’m definetly going to try the double dose.

Can I use just ivermectin or does it have to be Equimax?

Anecdotal evidence, for what it’s worth, is tending to show that the Equimax double dose is more effective, so I’d just go for it.

All of mine got a double dose of ivermectin last Saturday and will do the equimax next. Unfortunately Tucker’s habronema from hell is still there, but there is some improvement with the tail and other areas, especially the midline, though he is still sensitive around the sheath.

Chocomare - is this safe to do for a foundered horse??? Poor Libbey has itched out her tail horribly. I wormed her with a regular dose of Ivermectin but if anything, the tail just got worse. She has a couple of big hard itchy bumps on her neck and now I’m really worried. But she’s metabolic and worming/vaccinating scares the hell out of me.

Hmm, good question. If it was me, I’d try a regular Equimax dose, wait 7 days and regular dose again.

can we get this thread saved in the favorites?

Hooray, I found equimax on sale at the local southern states. The horse I inherited came with a partially rubbed mane and some itchy spots on his belly and HQ, and considering his dental and hoof neglect I’m sure he probably missed a few wormings too.

So, what’s the equimax doseage for a human? I am seriously itching to death here and I just KNOW I’m infested with worms. Seriously, is there a human parasite treatment guys? I need to call my doctor!

I, personally, wouldn’t mind a small parasite load…maybe then I would lose some weight! :stuck_out_tongue: What I need is the doseage for dogs. Can you believe it’s going to cost me $60 to worm my dog just with the over the counter stuff? (I caught her eating a rodent, then later snacking out of the litter box of the cat who is a master hunter…I’m sure she has every worm a dog can get) I don’t understand why they would move the decimal point for ann 80lb dog vs a 1000lb horse. :sigh:

Oh - I think it was in the early 1900’s that tapeworm eggs were sold in bottles as a “weight loss aid” for women.

Yes, women have a long history of torturing themselves to be “beautiful”.

Can’t help you the dosage for dogs - but don’t use the horse stuff or you may kill him. I usually buy dog wormer cheap at the feed store… I think one bottle of tapeworm wormer was 5.99.

I deworm the dogs 2x year w/Drontal. KILLS EVERYTHING. It’s worth the $$$ IMO. My vet carries it on her truck

I know! I keep thinking, geeze I’ll take a few worms  I can’t understand why they don’t give overweight people a couple tapeworms for a while.

Well I guess that’s one more reason for me to want to be dewormed - I am quite thin

A2, I would deworm your previously foundered horse. I would not give her vaccs. Put her on a high dose of MSM and be sure she is drinking well. I would not underdeworm her or try to do it in steps, it only creates resistance.

Equimax price

For those of us who have to do most of our equine shopping through catalogs, Country Supply (horse.com) has Equimax priced at $9.75 If your order is over $49 the shipping is free. My local farm type store has Equimax priced at $18 a tube and ALL the different wormers on their shelves have expired. I wonder how many people buy and don’t even check?

I just double-dosed my mare this morning with Equimax. She will be my guinea pig before I try it on my 24 yr. old gelding.

<SNIP>I’ve been reading about this nematode in humans; there are several species. What it’s done to people in Africa is just horrible. Such suffering.

Adblurr02 - there was a study done in humans on the use of topically applied Ivermectin. You’ll have to search google Scholar to find it though - I didn’t save it.
Thanks JSwan.

Goggle Scholar is nearly overwhelming… at least from the perspective of someone how is bored to tears by scientific journals (and needs a nap anyhow!)

However, struck gold on the first search (ivermetcin human)
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/6123884

and am still looking into the topical applications (pour on ivermerectin)

Yes, that was the one I was thinking of. Glad you found it.

I’ll try and find a picture of the bottle of tapeworm eggs sold to women. I was thinking I saw it live at the local drug store - it’s been a drug store for over 100 years and they had this collection of old bottles and scrips in a showcase.

Now I’m thinking I saw it on the net somewhere.

You know… all this reminds me of Maria Callas. Yes, the opera diva. Gorgeous voice. Quite the temper. Years ago I read a biography… she had a weight problem for many years. Anyway… she eventually lost some weight and spent the rest of her life very slender. Someone had asked her how she had lost the weight, and she said - that she HAD a tapeworm and that is why she had been so fat. I remember thinking at the time that I’d never known people to GAIN from worms; always lose.

Is it possible? Could it be? Did this person swallow a tapeworm egg on purpose and lie about it when she lost weight? I wonder… guess we’ll never know.

Altamont are you going to do the second double dose at 14 days? I wonder if the gets the rest of it?
Yes, in a week I will double dose with Equimax again.

Just as an FYI…
Anthelcide is Oxibendazole. It is marketed and labeled for Neck Thread Worms (NTWs) when given at 1.5 x the dose.
For anyone who is concerned about double dosing Equimax, you might try using the Anthelcide. However, as reported here, the double dose Equimax seems to REALLY knock out any of the little beasties that are hiding. The double dose, 2 weeks later, gets those that were missed the first time.

KV Vet has Equimax for $9.95 per tube. Free shipping for $50 and over orders. Use coupon code 54 for an additional $5 discount.

Now I need an alcoholic drink. :dead:

"Parascaris equorum, the large roundworm of horses, can be deadly to foals in their first year of life. After that, acquired immunity provides strong protection. Ascarids or roundworm infections are primarily a problem of young horses and are found in the small intestine. They can grow up to 60mm in length. If your horse has a heavy load of larvae, severe inflammation can occur. There can be major damage to the organs such as the liver and lungs. They can move up into the trachea and are coughed up and reswallowed. They can also block the bile duct. Unlike strongyles, roundworms do not attach themselves to the intestinal wall. They mature quickly and produce eggs rapidly. A horse that is heavily infected will have a pot belly. Ascarids raid allot of nutrition from your horse. These roundworms are heavy eaters. Roundworms also excrete toxins, cause digestive problems, and rob your horse of important nutrients which causes your horse not to thrive. "

Italics are mine…

Well, I have always said that deworming was key to fixing the IR horses.

Are you serious Eq??? I have only wormed Libbey 1 time since I’ve had her because quite frankly I was terrified of sending her over the edge. Prior to that, the previous owners had her 16 years and ATTEMPTED to worm her 1 time, but they admitted it was not successful because “she didn’t like it.” So this foundered horse is now 18 years old and has been wormed successfully only 1 time in her whole life. Oh boy. As scary as it is to me, I think I really need to do a double dose of … something. Then put her on a worming schedule like my other 2. I’ve just read so many scary things about foundered horses not tolerating chemicals or toxins. I vaccinated her once and she couldn’t walk for 3 days. I was afraid the worming would do the same thing, though it didn’t. I guess I thought I just got lucky that one time and was afraid to tempt fate again.
