Sort of Spin-off: What size girths do your horses wear?

The blanket size thread got me curious about girth sizes.

So what do your horses wear?

My narrow 16.2 ottb wears a 50" and that’s only because he has a deep girth.

16.3 Appendix has been filling out more and more that I finally had to get a 52" for him. It was so much easier when they could wear the same things!

Smallest 42" … to largest 50"

Smallest is 42" … everything inbetween up to 50"

16’2 mare who’s filling up quite nicely (see my picture profile - yes I’m proud!).
Dressage girth is 26’’ and jumping girth is 48’’ (but Delgrange girth elastic ends stretch a lot) so 50’’.

My lease mare wore a 54" with elastics on both ends  Shes an AQHA, about 15 HH but VERY round and took up my long legs very well. (Im just about 6 feet tall)

My 16.1 TB mare is a 56 with double elastic 58 if not as stretchy. That’s on my event/all purpose type saddle. She’s not the type of mare you look at and think “tank” but she’s super deep through her girth.

Big-bodied Trakehner takes a 52" with elastic on both ends on my jumping saddle and a 34" on the Dressage saddle. When he is very fit, the 52" JUST makes it onto the billets, but I like how everything sits and don’t want to go up a size.

Clydie mare takes a 56" with elastic on both sides when she’s fit on the Jumping saddle, and somehow can squeeze into the same 34" on the Dressage saddle as the Trak.

TB gelding takes a 50" and could probably do a 48" on the jumping saddle. I think the Dressage girth is about a 30."

My Drafty takes a 54" girth (with elastic only on one side) and when he’s gotten it fit I can tighten it up to three holes on one side and four on the other. When he’s not very fit, I use a girth extender to help me get it to the billet before I attach it properly.

Used to ride him with at 32" dressage girth when I had a saddle with long billets.

The 15.2h Thoroughbred mare I free lease goes in a 46" with my close contact and could easily fit into a 44"… she’s not very big!

Girth size isn’t as cut and dry as blanket size. Depending on the saddle’s size, type, and billets, a horse can wear many different girth sizes. My current horse (15.3 H TB) has used girths from 48-52 depending on which saddle I use. Last TB (16.1) ranged from 48-54.

14.2 paint wears a 44" girth on a short billet saddle, or a 20" dressage girth with a long billet saddle. Her western girth I think is a 30", but I can’t remember exactly.

My lease mare wore a 54" with elastics on both ends Shes an AQHA, about 15 HH but VERY round and took up my long legs very well. (Im just about 6 feet tall)

I’d love to see a pic of you on her! I’m having a hard time w/ the mental image

My quarter horse mare wears a 52" but could probably go down to a 50", she’s about 15.2

My 16.2 Swedish warmblood wears a 50" with elastic on one side

16.3 hh Saddlebred. 54" girth He’s built sort of like a barrel

Our lesson ponies 44" (round APHA sorts), the show horses would average at a 50" with the 17.1h slab sided Selle Francais gelding at a 54" and most of the DWBs at 50" or 52"

One of mine wears a 58" girth.:uhoh: Elastic at both ends, and I sometimes have to use pliers to get it started when buckling (just can’t grip and pull the billet when it barely passes through the buckle at first). He’s really not fat, just built round in the belly and his saddle has a short flap, so that means short billets. He’s 16.2ish. My “little” guy is 15.2 in high heels (he wears wedge pads, which I refer to as his lifts) and has been quite portly at times, wearing the size 56" hand me down girth from the other one. He’s not so chubby now, and wears a 52" most of the time. The tallest of the bunch is closer to 16.3 yet wears the smallest girth, a 50". All could vary though, depending on saddle.

My big boy wears a 56"!

All of mine wear 50" or 52" girths. Except for my small pony who’s in a 42" girth (I think…maybe a 40"?). Same horses as in the blanket thread:

  1. 17.1h TB gelding - typical TB build - can wear 50 or 52
  2. 17.1h WB gelding - built like a brick wall - has to wear 52
  3. 16.2h WB mare - very average body size - can wear 50 or 52
  4. 15.3h (long-backed) WB mare - can wear 50 or 52

My 16.3 TB wears a 52 (medium build, saddle has shortish billets). Could probably bump him up to a 54. Girth is neoprene Smartpak with elastic at both ends.

14.1 Quarter pony, whose impressive chunky-ness inspired the blanket size thread, can wear the same English girth only one hole tighter. However, I normally ride him in a western saddle and that girth is either a 30 or 32.

Pony’s barrel fits me slightly better than the TB…and I’m 6’ with a 35" inseam…he’s really chunky.

My giant boy (18hh+) wears a stretched out 58" or 60" with elastic on both ends and my big boy (17hh) wears a 54" with elastic on both ends.
