Sporthorse Arabians stallions- New England

I have two nice Arabian mares, and I am considering breeding one next year. The Internet seems inundated with MR types stallions with halter lines, but I am looking for the older fashioned, big boned riding Arabian stallions that I used to know as a kid. My favorite stallion in NE CT passed away a few years ago, and I was wondering if there are any other hidden gems I don’t know about around here.

Russian/crabbet/polish lines best suit my mares. Great temperament, good heart girth and solid backend are required. I am not terribly worried about show requirements, because my mares hunterpace, trail ride and we dabble with local shows, but I stopped showing A circuit about 15 yrs ago.

Can anyone help me?

I don’t know the first thing about the breed, so it may not help. but this farm is nearby…

He is lovely, but the last time I looked into breeding him his stud fee was close to 5k, which I am not able to justify.

Try Mary Trowbridge of Trowbridge Arabians, ct.
she is a very nice person and well known and with many, many connections.
I found her to be really gracious to complete strangers, really quite a surprise compared to many barns, imho.

I know Mary, and have had some good conversations with her at shows and the EA in Springfield. She had one of my homebred babies in training a few years back and his new owner did very well showing with her. I can shoot her assistant an email.

May be worth looking at imported semen ?

Crossen Arabians in CT.

Patti Bailey’s endurance stallions in New Hampshire may be of interest…

Pavvo (*Erros x Khassiopeia) stands in NJ. Not New England, but close. He stands at Fiery Run Farm www.fieryrunfarm.com.

I don’t have a helpful suggestion but am very curious, as my Arab mare is of Russian/Polish/Crabbett lines and I know what qualities you are referring to exactly. Am not going to be in a position to breed her(I am just a trailrider, a doting backyard owner and not up to my mare’s real talents!), but boy, are these wonderful horses.

Look at Al-Marah Arabians, Faerie Court Farms and Ann McKay’s Admiral Harnly. Good bone, athletic and the best minds.

Not New England, but PA:

http://www.greygoosefarmpa.com/ Click on “Stallions.” His show record has continued to increase. I know he has at least a few more SH National Championships since the site was last updated.

Pedigree

My high school best friend bought him as a 3 year old when we were both 18. I tried to talk her out of it-- I thought she was getting ripped off and didn’t think he’d amount to anything. I suppose I should go eat crow.

Thank you! Our veteran Pure bred stallion Sisyrinchium probably would be suitable but alas we have no semen we can ship the US from him - we have now learned our lesson and have importable semen from both our Anglo Arab stallion Persiflage and our young Part bred Incognito. However I don’t feel that’s going to help you this time!

If you are interested in our bloodlines I know of a stallion in the states who is by Sisyrinchium called Solti - he is owned by a lady called Kathleen Walker Cameron and if you send me a direct message (can you do that?) I will put you in touch. I think she is based in upstate NY. Further details I’m afraid are a bit sketchy as we were in touch nearly 2 years ago now!

Why are Arabian stallions in the US rarely stood up properly to evaluate conformation? Shots are either taken at an angle or stretched out behind. I don’t get it?

Thanks, Peggy (pegasus), for the mention.

I will second Peggy’s recommendation of Ann McKay’s stallion, Admiral Harnley, who is in the mid-atlantic area, but available by shipped semen. Ann McKay had a long running Anglo-arab and Arab breeding program and Admiral Harnley is the remaining purebred stallion of her breeding program. There is a bit about her program’s history here: http://annmckayhorses.com/Aazrak.html

While my farm is in New England (Vermont) my stallion, FCF Oberons Vanity, is currently out on a lease/partnership in SC and is being trained and prepped for eventing and possibly for the 2015 NA SPT (the lessee breeds RPSI sport ponies as well as Anglo-Arabs). One of his riders in SC was a test rider at one of the SPTs, and she thinks he’s great. I haven’t been marketing him heavily because we are focused on his training under saddle, but he is available via frozen and via fresh cooled at very affordable prices. He is 15H with 8" bone, HUGE feet (no high-low), deep wide body, uphill balance, incredibly kind and generous temperament, and free movement with a natural dorso-flexed carriage. He is schooling 2nd level and doing well with his jump schooling (XC and stadium). So far he has just 3 foals on the ground, but they inherited his great bone and substance, superb feet, sweet nature, and other good qualities. He is SCID, CA, and LFS clear and EVA negative and vaccinated. He is of Crabbet/CMK bloodlines with a dash of Spanish via his dam. If you are interested contact me and I can provide more info and other photos. (I’ve attached 2 images of him just to show his bone and give a basic impression. The 2nd two photos are of offspring --the first is a 2 1/2 year old filly last fall, the other is of a different filly at 4 months old)l My horsey roots are in the open world (primary exposure to dressage, eventing, and WB breeding) rather than in the Arab breed world so my core evaluation criteria are sport horse based.

The Shagya Arabian is what you are searching for? When breeding your PB Arabian mare to a Shagya stallion, the offspring may be reg. half Arabian and as a purebred Shagya with the Shagya registry. You will likely get larger bone, better temperament, and all the trailts you are searching for. There are several Shagya stallions available with frozen semen. I can assure you this breed with a program of breed selection since 1789 will NOT disappoint. They are truly an amazing breed (recognized by WAHO) and anyone that comes in contact will be entralled!

He’s not really showing much because he’s basically preparing for GP dressage (but has shown a bit lower level to get mileage, despite being more suited to upper level.) Fun horse who is very HAPPY to work, lives near mares all the time and doesn’t really let them affect his work, a lot of energy but no real misbehavior.

He’s obviously not in New England, but a super nice horse. At a clinic with Alex Gerding he about lost it over this horse’s quality.

If you’re willing to do AI I would recommend checking out http://www.shnpayback.org/ for stallions.

Dr. Ann Schmidt is no longer doing AI, so I am not sure who I can trust for AI anymore. I would really like to breed my Straight Russian mare to a SR stallion from Europe to try to preserve an unusual line, but the last time I used a local vet to try to do frozen, it did not go well for 4 cycles and the semen was fine:( timing was an issue.

My polish/crabbet mares best foal was out of my SR stallion, but he is now many years deceased.

There was a lovely stallion at the pomfret Hunter pace that I only saw through pictures and people talking about his good manners, but the photographer didn’t catch his number, and my friend who runs it couldn’t pinpoint who he was. Gorgeous head, neck, shoulder and hip. And a great temperament. Sigh.

I like quite a few of the payback stallions, but I have significant reservations about the person running it.

What state are you in? Maybe we can help you find a vet with good repro skills.
