Sporthorse TB Stallions in CA?

Hi, I have a TB mare thinking of breeding for an eventer baby in a few years (I’d plan to keep the baby for me). I was considering a warmblood, maybe Redwine. But really love the thoroughbred mind. So I am thinking also of a TB sporthorse daddy. To register as a TB requires live cover so looking for something in my region. Anything? Or I suppose I could go AI and just not be able to register. I could also consider a warmblood that has lots of TB. I’ll be riding the baby and doubt I will want to do more than training, possibly prelim.

Pictures of her as a 4 year old.

Pedigree

Check out Victory Rose Thoroughbreds. They are over near Davis and I believe they just picked up a nice TB stallion from the east coast. His name escapes me at the moment.

I think the lovely Comet Shine is in California—http://bredtojump.com/cometshine.html

Actually, a quick google search reveals that Comet Shine might now be standing at Victory Rose:

A thread about Comet Shine! (Can you tell I LOVE this stallion?)

And a hypothetical pedigree for you  http://www.equineline.com/Free-5X-Pedigree.cfm?page_state=ORDER_AND_CONFIRM&sire_reference_number=1315975&dam_reference_number=7186939&color=+&sex=+&hypo_foaling_year=&breeder=&nicking_stats_indicator=Y&x=42&y=9

Noble Houston is in Livermore, CA

Comet Shine has passed away, according to other posts on this board.

I ran across this Never Bend Better stallion recently. Don’t know ANYTHING about him, but he looks interesting. http://www.kentwood-farms.00home.com/index.html

If you go back to thinking WB, Gatsby is out west and he is 1/2 TB by pedigree.

Oh, no! Bummer. He was just gorgeous.

Has anyone seen Giacomo in person? I stumbled upon a picture of him the other day and he looked to have really good sporthorse type conformation. It was just one photo and I don’t know if any of his offspring have been successful in eventing or jumping, but he is one that I would look in to for sure =)

Thanks for all the info so far. My mare does not have perfect conformation but she is amazingly level headed and a very fun horse to ride. Very athletic and works her heart out for me. Those are characteristics that I would love to have in a baby. Too bad about comet shine- he looked gorgeous.

Looks like Bold Chieftain went to Victory Rose, he is a super cool horse. Probably a little expensive for a sporthorse, but I spent some time with him at GGF up close and personal and everything about him made him seem like he would have been a great sporthorse. Sound racing until he was 8 years old.

Victory Rose also stands Behrens, who is gorgeous. What I’ve always liked about him is that he raced until at least five. http://www.victoryrose.com/html/berhens.html He used to stand on the East Coast, and I have seen several of his get at Finger Lakes. Gorgeous animals, and, for the most part, easy to be around. He’s a little expensive, but, as I was once told, over the course of a lifetime, the stud fee ends up being one of the least expensive things to consider.

I would suggest stearing clear of the farm that had Comet Shine, and currently had Noble Houston. I was booked to Comet Shine last year, and lost a lot of $$ for nothing. Very poor communication on the SO’s end, and I never even got a shipment of semen. I had to threaten with a lawyer to get the stud fee back (even after she had declared the stallion to not be shippable). I’ve spoken to a couple other people on COTH and they relayed similiar stories with the same SO.

This is one I’ve had my eye on…will try to try out more about his location in Ca.

He’s in the TB Times.

Website is listed as www.serpentinefarms.com, (in Grass Valley, CA) although that doesn’t go anywhere. Here’s an email… sreed26953@sbcglobal.net

I am very sorry that GAEventer had this horrible experience. I communicated with her VERY well and have emails and phone records to prove it. I had NO idea that Comet Shine’s fertility was going to decrease so rapidly, and when the quality of the collections were so poor that it seemed impossible that a mare could get pregnant, I opted NOT to ship it to GAEventer.

I stupidly thought that she would prefer this, I thought that I was saving her from paying the shipping and further vet bills for insemination.

Instead, it seems she would have preferred to have gotten the semen, although Comet Shine’s numbers were so poor that an entire ejaculate did not make up a breeding dose.

In addition to repeated apologies, I stated that I would refund her the stud fee in full–it was MY idea–she did not have to threaten with a lawsuit. I also offered to give her 2 free breedings to any stallions I ever owned or stood in the future, which she turned down.

As a mare owner, I know that it is frustrating when you are trying to get your mare bred. I have let it go when GAE makes comments, but the story is getting more and more distorted. I had EVERY reason in the world to want Comet Shine to be shippable. I consulted with repro experts including Pioneer Hospital in Oakdale (an SBS Breeder), UC Davis, and Kathy Martin, we tried centrifuging to see if we could get a shippable dose, we had him on Immunall and a Platinum Performance product that was supposed to improve quality and numbers–nothing worked. Even with on farm breeding, with young, fertile, proven broodmares, we only got 2 mares in foal.

I have done the breeding management for a couple of other stallions, collecting/processing/shipping, and have many happy mare owners to show for it.

Megan, I’m sorry. I’m REALLY sorry. I have apologized, I’ve refunded, I’ve offered free breedings, I don’t know what else to do to make it right…I’m reluctant to consider hari kari, just cause I’ve got a really busy week!

I’d be happy to take those free breedings. I’ve had myself a hot crush on Behrens for about year.

The first bunch of horses I had the pleasure of producing were by a Pleasent Colony fellow. Nice big quiet kids they were.

as for the OP. I’d go Beherns all the way. In fact, I would choose him over the late Comet Shine.

I don’t think 3K is out of the question for a breeding.

If you would consider part TB then also take a peek at:

Roc USA (1/2 TB and 1/2 SF on the bottom gives him 1/2 blood in his pedigree)

and Jaguar Mail
He’s 7/8 TB and 1/8 SF.

For a nice, laid back Trianing/Prelim horse I think Roc USA might fit the bill.
At the lower levels you really have to have a wowzers in the dressage to place these days.

Aberjack (7/8ths TB) is now in Wilton, CA:

Flashykatt isn’t related to Victory Rose. She had a palomino TB stallion and Noble Houston. After having difficulty reaching her via email or the phone. There was no way I was going to risk prepping my mare AGAIN, and not getting semen.

Flashkatt, two different times I didn’t get shipments because the stallion ‘cut his hock’ and then because the gel filter ‘broke’. Then on the third time, he ‘wasn’t shippable’. Hard to believe…I spent LOTS of money having the mare palpated, boarded and lutalysed. Just to ironic for me. And it took months of nagging phone calls, emails, and yes, me saying I was going to get a lawyer involved before you refunded my money.

Enough said.

Sigh…the unsuccessful breeding attempts were in May and June, and you had your refund before the end of June.

I realize that this was a horrible experience for you and has tainted your entire life.

I know that this all happened while I was on foal watch (ie I was somewhat sleep deprived)–so I’m sure there were things that I could have done differently, and done better.

Obviously, you came away from the experience feeling that I made no effort customer-service-wise, that I didn’t care. This was not the case, and again, I apologize. I did care, I did want it to work, it clearly DIDN’T, I’m sorry, I’m sorry.

Anyway, to return to the OP’s question, I’ve always liked this TB stallion:
http://www.bluemoonfarm.us/Stallions-ATeamEffort.htm

Also, if you like color, White Magic is a cremello TB who stands in Southern California, (although I think he’s in Colorado for the 2012 season?) http://www.whitemagictb.com/
and Ivory Coast is in Petaluma, although he might only be available via frozen semen this season since he is competing and for sale http://glenhillfarm.com/GFIvoryCoast2.htm

The previously mentioned Victory Rose Thoroughbreds are very willing to breed to non-racing mares, but they are not really interested in shipping semen
(so you’d have to bring your mare to them).
