Sports Bra Reviews

OK, this topic comes up all the time, so I thought I’d start a thread - please add to this thread and make it useful! I’ve just tried several high support sports bras in the past couple of months, here is the run down. About me - I’m big busted (D to DD) but relatively small around (32/34 depending on the brand). I ride 2 horses regularly, and one is bouncy. Schooling 3rd and 4th level on her, so I need support for sitting trot work - lots of support. I HATE underwires, hate, hate, hate… So part of my criteria is no underwire. Since different people have different preferences and body types, my comfort may NOT be the same as yours.

Pull on/over bras never work -they are never big enough through the bust, and always too big through the body. I’ve been riding in Champion sports bras, maximum support, hook back, and they are OK, but I have been kind of “overflowing” the sides - mainly because most of them max out at D cup. And the model I have been riding in is discontinued - the newer models are just a bit less support (although they added DD), which doesn’t work when riding a bouncy trot. So, the search begins…

Moving Comfort/Brooks - I tried the Fiona and the Jubralee. Fiona felt great when I put it on, and it isn’t so massively overwhelming - I thought it might be a useful every-day bra too. So I wore it for the day, and it started to fold over in the bottom front. By the next day, it seemed permanently folded over there - gotta check with REI and see if they will take it back, it is a major failure, I didn’t even bother riding in it. Jubralee is a much “bigger” bra with more coverage on the sides and more structure underneath - it is less comfortable because of that - a bit of chafing through the under arms, but not horrible. Support is pretty good, but not fabulous. I did love the straps, well padded, wide, no shoulder issues at all. I’m afraid if I wore it on a hot day, the chafing might become an issue. Haven’t tested that out yet. Got them through REI - free shipping at $50.

Enell - a friend called me a couple of months ago, and said she’d found a miracle bra! She is big busted too - bigger in the body, but we share the big busted, hard-to-find a good bra issue. She trail rides, so support is important, but not as important (aka no sitting trot work). She also has a bad back, and said this bra made a huge difference in how her back felt. She got the Enell Lite, and swears by it. I looked it up, and they were having a special (called her to let her know, so she ordered another). I tried the regular Enell, since I need that added support for the bouncy trot. Followed their fitting instructions, and ordered up since I was kind of on the edge of the next size up, and all the reviews said, “when in doubt, order up.” Enell’s website actually says “if you want more support, order down, when you want a bit less support, order up in size”.

Well, that bra came, I harnessed myself in (had to watch a video just to figure out how to get into the darn thing - you do NOT want to be in a rush when putting it on). The instructions said to wear it for a bit to let it stretch out. Well, I don’t know how long a bit is, but I couldnt breathe in the darn thing. It was that tight. Holy mackeral. Also a LOT of coverage - it is not just a bra, it is a freaking corset - and I live in a hot climate. It is cut so high, that you need a high cut shirt or it will show - I put on a polo shirt and could only unbutton one button before the bra showed. I kept imagining how hot it might get. Meanwhile, I bounced around a bit, and although it was WAY tight on the body, the support was not that great. It might keep you looking a bit trimmer (did I mention it was a corset?), but I’m not sure it is the answer to the sitting trot on a bouncy horse. I’m not sure I could ride in it since I couldn’t BREATHE in it. Wore it for a few hours, decided it wasn’t going to stretch out anymore, and I needed to get some good breaths in. Bagged it up and sent it back. Enell’s shipping is $7, not free.

SheFit - I will admit, I had my doubts. Had seen them at the HorsExpo just a few weeks ago, and they were fitting them over our existing bras. Well, of course there is support, I have a freaking sports bra on already! Halfpasser11 had posted a discount code (LastSpring for those who are interested - it is still working) for the “special colors”, so I thought I’d give it a try. Free shipping helped seal that thought. I had my doubts - no actual cup sizes, it won’t be big enough. Front zip - it’s going to poke me - and not be big enough.

OMG - I am a convert. So, this bra is interesting - you zip it on in front, then cinch it up as tight as you need around the bottom. Then tighten up the shoulder straps as much as you want - that is another issue I often find, the shoulder straps don’t go up enough for a smaller body. There is a cloth tab over the zipper so no poking. Cup size might not fit if you are smaller - these are definitely for the full boobed women. Because you can cinch up the body size, even us smaller bodied people can wear these.

The side coverage is quite good, but no chafing (hurrah!), while it is cut low enough in front that you can show a bit of cleavage, or wear a v necked shirt, or unbutton your polo shirt a few buttons. I wasn’t spilling out the front, but I didn’t have bra coming all the way up my chest. I’ve ridden in it twice - in hot weather. No bounce, lots of support, I’m sold on it - just ordered a 2nd one.

I wish it had a bit more padding on the straps - they are wide enough, but could be more padded. Another thing to be aware of - this bra has velcro, so it needs to be washed in a lingere bag or something to keep it from damaging your other clothes. Or handwash (I’ll use a bag!).

So that is my review of several popular sports bras. Please feel free to add additional reviews here! Here’s to good support!

I found the solution reading COTH. Just wear two bras. High support no wire regular bra and sports bra on top. You can take the sports bra off after you ride.

I’ve been looking at the online bras but lots of them seem to have somewhat padded cups as part of the support. I don’t want that.

So my requirement is: no padding, no wire, high impact support, back closure, adjustable straps, comes in cup sizes, has D cup.

I’m kind of surprised no tack store has thought of carrying good sports bras, since the actual sports stores can’t be bothered.

I recently got a bra on Amazon for $20 that has since replaced my beloved Champion Spot Comfort. It’s some random brand but it is great. I’m a 32F.

MysticOak, I agree! I’ve tried so many I cant even count. Some VERY expensive. SheFit is now my go-to bra. Am training 4th level and love, love, love this bra for all trot work. I’m a 34DD

How does the bottom band customization work? If you take out the modesty pads does the bra still fit and support? Honestly for sports bras I prefer a bit of a minimizer effect  which disappears if there’s padding.

At current exchange rates that’s almost $100 CAN :frowning:

The pads are very thin - if you take them out, your nipples are more evident, but that is about it. I think that is all those pads do is hide the nipple effect… OMG, I hope there are no men reading this thread:uhoh:

The band goes through a loop and cinches as tight as you need it, then you velcro it shut. Sounds cheesy but looks and feels great - I hate bras that are too loose through the bottom band, which is the problem I run into often.

Wow, I didn’t realize how much your dollar had dropped against ours! $72 if you buy one of the “spring colors” ($55). Last time I looked (admit it has been several years), the Canadian dollar was worth MORE then the US dollar… Our dollar has dropped against most European currencies - weird. Global economics!!!

For the Moving Comfort Fiona/Jubralee fans…this is the new version of that.

it’s very similar except the bottom band is more padded and the straps are wider. I’m a fan of it, although I wish it came in bigger cup sizes (tops out at DD but runs big – as an F cup I don’t have that much overflow).

This Anita one is very light and comfortable, but not super supportive. The straps also loosen easily and it tends to give you a little bit of a 1950s-style erm…pointy…shape. Still useful for light rides or an everyday bra.

There was another bra thread recently… in which SheFit was mentioned. I broke down and ordered one. I am exactly as you describe, @MysticOakRanch - very small in the rib cage, busty otherwise, and underwires are medieval torture devices.

I love it. Absolutely love it. I leave the straps criss-crossed in the back as that way they don’t slip down my shoulders. The one downside to that is where they sit they tend to show thru my T-shirt. Probably not an issue with a collared shirt such as a polo.

I have been riding in hot weather and while it gets sweaty, I don’t feel uncomfortable and there has been no chafing.

Previously I have been using the Champion bras. They are “okay” but not great. For gals our size, they need to have 4 closures in the back, not 2 or 3!

Yeah somewhere along the line the visible nipple became a terrible thing.

I came of age in the 1970s when no bra was a totally ok option and never have quite understood the nipple horror thing.

I am so over the 2 bra thing. Been doing it for 35 years. I found this bra on Amazon. Core 10 Women’s High Support Wire-Free Cross Back Front-Zip Running Sports Bra A-H Cup

The link is wonky so cut and paste it. It works. The band is tight, I wish I could tighten the shoulder straps a little more but it’s the first bra I have been able to ride in without having to double up. I take a 34DD in this bra. I’m usually a D or DD and either a 34 or 36 depending on brand. I like it snug and the 34 is snug. It’s perfect. I’ve ordered 3 and am cleaning out my bra drawer. It’s gotten overwhelming. I hope they last, that’s my one last thought.

Edited to add, I don’t like any bouncing at all if that matters. NONE!!

In general, I am very anti-underwire. My exception is the Champion Double Dry Bra that comes in a C/D cup and D/DD cup. I have a bunch of these; an occasional single bra hasn’t been as comfortable as my others, so if you decide to check it out I’d try more than one in the same size. Try it on at different hooks too.

I have an Enell I’ve never been able to wear, I really need to sell it somewhere.

I have a couple of Anita sports bras, would have to check model #'s but they are wirefree. Gotta get them back in the rotation, I’ve just been wearing the Champions lately.

I find this one pretty good… [h=1]BERLEI Shift Contour High Impact Sports Gym Underwire Bra[/h]

For those of us with a smaller chest (B cup) I find the Fiona bra is nice. It’s almost too much bra, but I’ve had 2 of them for years now and quite like them due to the back hook closure and it’s nice to have some non racer back in the collection. I know this thread is more directed at those that actually have something on their chest, but I figured I’d add in that it’s also good for those of us that are smaller.

I can pretty much go with whatever due to being small, some make me look more flat, but some are too much and there’s more bra/padding than boob

There was a thread for this last week that I was responding to…

I just recently purchased the Panache sport WITH underwire based off reviews from this forum, and I LOVE it. I’ve used it at the gym and riding now numerous times and it has held up nicely. I’m going to need to get more because it’s going through the wash too much right now.

Compared to my other one that I purchased at Target for high intensity, but without an underwire, I prefer to Panache to whatever branch the other one is.

All I can say is do NOT buy the knock off on Amazong of the she-fit. The cloth cover over the zipper was so flimsy I chaffed to bleeding under it. So yeah, spend the $ on a real she-fit.

I’ve posted about this Walcoal underwire sports bra before: https://shop.nordstrom.com/s/wacoal-…&color=peacoat

It comes in various colors, but I couldn’t get the official Walcoal link to work.

Very supportive, without feeling too constricting, and it’s not hot to wear (or sticky) in our very warm summers. Hasn’t chafed, nor restricted my breathing.

A little higher-necked than a non-sports bra, so it might show a bit under some regular apparel (although not any of the quarter-zip tops I wear when riding).

Unlined cups, but I haven’t had a “headlight” issue, however, I’m not wearing especially clingy tops. Comfortable enough that I sometimes wear one with regular, non-riding, clothes as an everyday bra. I’ve not yet tried crossing the straps, as the regular way fits so well on me (padded straps which don’t slip off my shoulders but don’t press down on them, either).

I want NO bounce, at all - non, nada, zip.

I just purchased the Shefit and it’s nice…but I still hate the uniboob look. I don’t feel like it compresses as well as the Enell does, but I’m so tired of the Enells not having good breathability that I’m willing to deal with it. I agree with the person above who said the straps could have more cushion. I find that they dig into me a little more than I’d like right at the base of my neck on each side. Also not a fan of being able to see the outline of the zipper through my shirt in the middle of my chest and I feel like it gets a little bunchy on the sides. I tried the next size down, but that was just way too snug and I had to squeeze myself into it, which I didn’t like. I think I’m going to go for the Panache soon. I used to have one, and I really liked the support and separation…I just struggled to get the right size.

I posted in the other thread but I’ll toss in my $0.02 here for posterity.

I’ve average all around and wear a 34 B/C depending on the brand. I used to just ride in medium Champion sports bras or something similar but as I get older (I’m 30-ish) I’m so freaking done pulling a sweaty bra over my head. And honestly, the support of those bras is okay for me but I wanted absolutely no movement. I bought a bunch of front zip bras on amazon because I didn’t want to spend the money on a Shefit. Lo and behold they all sucked, except for the UA front zip but that one was $65 and the zipper didn’t seem like it would last.

After trying the shefit I really like it and have ordered 3 in the span of a month. This isn’t a hang out bra, it’s supportive and if I wear it too long (4+ hours) it starts to hurt. But it’s so easy to get on, off, wash, adjust etc… it’s so worth it. I was between a medium and a small in the shefit and I ordered the small because I’ve been dropping weight. The small fits tight and kinda presses the girls together but all I care is that they don’t move once I cinch it up. I also don’t really mind that you and sort-of see the seams and zipper under a top. I don’t think it’s a secret I’m wearing a bra.

I swear I’m not affiliated with shefit, I just think more dressage riders should be aware of them. It’s nice for us small/medium chested girls to have a bra that locks down the chest too. Just because I’m not busty doesn’t mean I want to feel jiggling in my lesson!

Has anyone tried the Kerrits EQ Sport Shoulders Back bra yet?

I am a 34D and have a bunch of Shockabsorber bras - has anyone tried those? A lot of tack stores in my area are starting to carry them, but you can also find them online.

While they are not overly comfortable for wearing many hours in a row (like 4+) and they do create a uni-boob - they lock it down like no other bra I have tried. There is absolutely no bounce while doing mediums or extended trot. They also are breathable and they have two back clasps so it doesn’t have to go over your head.

They aren’t cheap, but I think the last ones I ordered were from an online company in the UK and it worked out to be about $60CAD per bra, which isn’t too bad.
