Confess, you know you all do it…sing silly ditties to your horse and dance for them while on the cross ties…my most common “here comes peter cotton tail…we’ll still clear the jump with out taking a rail” as bunnies dart out of the woods into the ring with an occasional “talk dirty to me” when I first see them after a roll in the mud
I have a gelding whose registered name is “Skippity Clue Da” and he has his own song to the tune of Zippity Doo Da. It goes: Skippity Clue Da, Skippity Ay, my oh my, I’m a winner today. Plenty of ribbons heading my way. Skippity Clue Da, skippity Ay!
And for my other gelding, Bosco - the Oscar Mayer weiner song: “My pony has a first name, it’s B-O-S-C-O. My pony has a second name, it’s B-U-T-T—T (had to make it fit…). I love to ride him every day and if you asked me why I’d say, cause Bosco Butt has a way of bringing joy into my day.” Dorky, but my friend and I were a little liquored up after a horse show when we started singing it.
Yes, also my horses each have theme songs like baseball players.
In college a friend sang Kenny Rogers “Lady” but replaced lady with whatever horse she happened to be riding that morning.
And best of all my trainer sings to my mare.
(raises hand…) Feeding, especially early in the morning, I often sing to my beasts. They tolerate being serenaded and the occasional dance in the aisle since I am the food lady!
“Darling Clementine” — I’m tone-deaf and have no range when I sing, and it’s a nice, even, easy-to-sing song. And slightly ghoulish, as well!
Well, my 25yo guy’s name is Tigger (came with the name when I got him as a 6yo), so naturally I sing the Tigger Song to him: “The wonderful thing about Tiggers, is Tiggers are wonderful things! Their tops are made out of rubber! Their bottoms are made out of springs! They’re bouncy, trouncy, flouncy, pouncy, fun, fun, fun, fun, fun! But the most wonderful thing about Tiggers is (he’s/you’re) the only one!”
And it totally fit because he has the bounciest trot, and as a younger horse he was quite silly.
My 17yo (Calvin) has had the nickname “Baby” since he was a little foal. He’s a 16.3 moose (wide AQHA), but he’s still Baby to me. So this winter with the record cold and snow, I often sang, “Baby, it’s Cold Outside” to him when I was out taking care of them.
My 6yo appy (Milton), doesn’t have a song. I’ll have to work on that. He can’t be left out!
When I was cantering along on something that wanted to be heavy…“Lean on me when you’re not strong. I’ll be your friend. I’ll help you carry on”…sing it with me everyone
I don’t sing in the barn, I let Jimmy Buffet do that on Margaritaville. My go to song for riding is: Yellow Submarine.
For some reason “Popular”, from “Wicked”, is my stall cleaning song. My horses seem to like it.
I do all the time! Either I sing songs and change the words to fit the horses’ names or just make them silly…or I sing Italian songs to them a la Dean Martin, LOL!
They also like Frank Zappa and Queen and most/all country music.
My cats like when I sing the songs from Mary Poppins to them, LOL!
I stereotype my pets…the ranch-bred AQHAs hear country most often and I sing a few English ditties to my British cats.
That’s why we have radios in the barn, amiright!? Especially if I’m feeling particularly energetic, I will sing and dance all over the place.
The over exuberant 3 year old colt we just took in on training (now a gelding as of Tuesday ) was loped to the tune of “here we come to save the day!” But replaced with “here we come to breed some mares!” ??
It was a rough week. Spring in the air and five mares in foal heat right outside the arena.
When I got my first horse, I was terrified of her, (not her fault) and so as I cleaned her stall or groomed her, I sang “you are my sunshine”. Sang that every day of the 26 years I owned her. Sang it to her as she was put down… her son, now a 22 year old stallion goes to complete mush when I sing that to him…
A few years ago when I still had my welsh pony, I thought I was alone in the barn, so I started singing a song I made up about her to the tune of the Perry the Platypus song from Phineas and Ferb. I was surprised, and somewhat horrified, to hear “Nice song” and some snickering from behind me. I didn’t live that one down for a while!
I do sing while I am riding, too. I normally do Beatles songs, since they are my favorites. “Eight Days a Week” and “With a Little Help from My Friends” go well with my mare’s canter. I also really like to sing “Sugar Magnolia” by the Grateful Dead when I ride.
I used to sing the Grateful Dead’s Casey Jones to my TB at the end of a long show as I was cutting down his braids. Seemed to calm us both down.
“Driving that train, high on cocaine” go figure…
When I first got my TWH he was AllAboutSpeed, so to slow him I sang as I rode: Stewball Was A Racehorse, subbing his name for Stewball.
Current WB takes up so much of my leg his song is the Too Fat polka
Pony doesn’t have a theme, but Bad to the Bone is fitting at times, other times Pharrell’s Happy
Mostly I sing to them both with barncat on lap after chores are done & they are munching hay. Song choices vary & are suggested by weather, etc.
Horses don’t leave & cat purrs, so I must be at least partly on-key
Yep - I tend to make up silly songs about just about everything: Feeding, cleaning stalls, mowing. Completely made up and I often don’t even remember the lyrics I came up with!
For some reason I always get the Yes song I’ve Seen All Good People stuck in my head while I’m on course:
“Take a straight and stronger course to the corner of your life…”
When I ride a horse with rythmn issues (usually a green bean) I sing jungle bells.
Every one of the horses I’ve been close to has had a song. Sometimes it’s a silly one, sometimes something more meaningful. The first horse I really connected to would turn to mush if I sang My Immortal by Evanescence. Another seemed to like Disney songs, another liked Martha My Dear by The Beatles (a gelding but an old soul. It suited him. I changed it to Mark My Dear). To my horse now, I sing Once Upon A December from the movie Anastasia. I met and bought him in December so it fits.
I’m actually kind of thrilled that this got bumped up. I was recently managing a friends barn for a couple weeks, and the tween girls who come to ride were “soothing” the young horses with
And they say
She’s in the class A Team
Stuck in her daydream
Been this way since eighteen
But lately,
her face seems
Slowly sinking, wasting
Crumbling like pastries
And they scream
The worst things in life come free to us
Cause we’re just under the upper hand
And go mad for a couple grams
And she don’t want to go outside tonight
And in a pipe she flies to the Motherland
And sells love to another man
It’s too cold outside
For angels to fly
And I say "are you singing songs about prostitution and drug use to the horses?
Yes.
Seriously, only the chorus, over and over again hahaha
I love that song, but it was slightly awkward
After a bath, I used to throw a towel over my guy’s head with just his face peering out. Then I’d sing Ave Maria. Nuts, I know. But he quite enjoyed the attention.
