Stallion suggestions available fresh for eventing foal

Hello all! I am helping a friend of mine gather some options for her mare for this spring. The mare in question is a lovely TB mare that has been a quite successful prelim/1* mount for two kids. The mare has a brain and attitude that can’t be beat. She’s a quality mover but could perhaps use a bit more suspension in her gaits. She has a great gallop, though she could be a touch more uphill. The mare has a good jump that could stand to be a little rounder for the show jumping. She is an older maiden mare, so we are looking for stallions that are available fresh in the US. The ultimate goal for the foal would be an upper level event prospect. Because she is a maiden, we would prefer a stallion that is a bit more proven in what he produces vs a younger unproven stallion.

Pedigree

Thank you for your time! Happy to provide additional info as needed!

Cedarbrook Farm’s stallion Just A Devil has babies doing really well in eventing. A son, Lucky Devil, out of a mare by my stallion Nevada (her mom is a TB) is going Advanced with Lauren Kieffer. Lucky Devil is 87.5% TB https://sites.google.com/site/cedarbrookfarmva/stallions

Her pedigree is outstanding. Good luck!

Is Rather Well available fresh? I would personally, if she was my mare, use Rather Well on her if you wanted full TB… you’ll introduce a little more HTR to the equation but he ticks all of your boxes and that would be a nice nick pedigree wise adding the Raja Baba and Bold Ruler to the equation. He is very much proven, is an excellent jumper and his foals are all very good movers that I have seen.

Or you could go Tatendrang who would iMHO improve movement and uphill way of going - I have seen him improve gallops.

Love the suggestion of Rather Well!

Not proven…but his bloodlines are.

My young Oldenburg stallion His Querido (His Highness/Quattro B) should produce very nice event types with a mare like yours. He’s in Canada, but can ship Semen to the US without any restrictions.

I bred my exceptional full TB A Fine Romance daughter, who was a full sister to a winning Grand Prix jumper and an Advanced event horse to VDL Windsor.
The resulting foal (now 3) was/is everything I could have hoped for.
He is an incredible athlete, very TB in his phenotype, with very elastic gaits, plenty of suspension but still very light in his movement.
I might be biased but he is phenomenal.
VDL Windsor (Indoctro x Ahorn) stands in Ontario and has competed on the jumper circuit with his AA owner. The semen was excellent. His oldest foals are starting their performance careers.

I have no connection to this stallion other than having bred to him, and I would not hesitate to recommend him.
Shipping semen to the US from Canada is easy and straightforward.
VDL Windsor has his own FB page.

Here is my colt, as a 2 yr old.

I like the suggestion of VDL Windsor too! He is really nice… and seems to do really well crossed on TBs.

I would echo the Tatendrang recommendation. I have been around him a lot, seen several of his foals, and currently have two on my farm, with a mare back in foal to him for a full sibling.

He has excellent semen, and both his owner and manager are exceptional to deal with.

This is the filly I bred: https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=10206351450481251&set=a.1612653712366.2078983.1116980909&type=3&theater

Edited to add: I see you are in TN, if your friend is also in TN y’all would be welcome to come by my farm to see the two Tate fillies I have, a 2016 filly and a coming 3 yr old!

Fred: Thank you for the recommendation! Your colt is LOVELY! I quite like that stallion, definitely adding him to our shortlist!

Dance_to_oblivion: That would be great! Let me talk with her but that is something that we would definitely be interested in. I’m in middle Tn and they are in Knoxville.

Meeting at my farm might be right in the middle for you lol
Anytime

Thanks for all the replies thus far! Please keep them coming. Two stallions that have been mentioned to me outside this board were Halimey Go and Formula One. Thoughts?

Thanks, eventingVOL!
I forgot to mention that VDL Windsor is a half-brother to a GP jumper and an upperlevel jumper - VDL Ulando -who went on to be an Advanced event horse before his sad and premature death.

I’ve just seen some video of Watermill Famous 54 - looks interesting…

Halimey is a really cool stallion, and I like the foals of his that I have seen! However my understanding is that while he is competing his owner is only offering him frozen, so for that reason only I did not suggest him!

OP, I really, really like Halimey Go. I would have suggested him in my first post but he is frozen only.

Would not consider Formula One for ammy UL prospect.

I love tatendrang also. I thought tzigane a trakehner stallion with upper level get was coming back to the USA also.

I have had the absolute privilege of riding and handling VDL Windsor and several of his kids on and off the last year or so while his ammy owner was pregnant/on mat leave. Also two VDL Ulando offspring. The dams are also on-site and I know them well. PM me if you want to know more (he’s lovely).

Their plan, as I understand it, is to place the foal with a pro; not necessarily as an upper level mount for their daughters. The pro is a friend of mine and their trainer who has ridden to the 3* level. But not everything ends up doing what it is intended to do, so good to know about F1 not necessarily being the most ammy friendly stallion.

I have a friend who is an UL event rider in the UK, who was working here in Canada for a while. Before I bred to VDL Windsor she went to see him and rode him too. She absolutely loved him.

Cicera’s Icewater–that was a top contender for my mare last year when the leaser was breeding for an upper level eventer. She went with Orlando instead due to availability reasons last year. Outstanding colt produced–Hyperion Stud manages both stallions.
