Stallion Suggestions For My Mare, Please

I don’t know what your mares strengths and weaknesses are but if I was going to breed for jumpers I would take a look at Capone I. He’s in B.C.

These would be my two picks. Expecting a Rather Well foal in a few weeks (he was my second choice as AFR was my first, but unavailable…obviously). My mare took the first time with him (though this is typical for my mare), owner was easy to work with as well. Glad the to hear the AFR line will continue, good luck!

I love Capone. There is an AFR son out of a Capone mare, who is a very exciting young prospect.

Thank you SFJ, thank you for thinking of Fred, and very best of luck with your mare.
There is an AFR daughter not too far from me who is expecting her first foal, any day now, by Sir Wanabi. Very excited for her owners.

Valentino is on my short list for several of my mares. If you were breeding for eventing and wanted to stay with fresh in Canada…he would be my pick.

If she is a real blood type…I might also consider Bon Balou–you would get a jumper type for sure and probably very marketable. Dreamscape actually has several jumper stallions that I like.

But if you thought about frozen…that opens a lot more options.

I do not know his children, nor have I met him, but he jumped up to 1.6m, has some interesting blood and I think they are offering a per collection deal on him right now. Based on paper and performance I think he is attraction. (And I do think, you might as well go jumper with the great mare you are working with!)

Oh Gail, I know it has been so difficult for you and understandably so.

I’m so happy that you are getting back into the swing of things. I believe you have a great purpose and role to fulfill in keeping Fred’s legacy alive. You are the one who can and will do so, with the careful attention and dedication that it deserves.

Thank you bornfree. I love Valentino, and also loved Bon Balou. I also like Dreamscape’s Lestat very much.
Thank you for that suggestion too, omare.
skydy - thank you, Sue. I appreciate your kindness.
VB - thank you, I am a huge fan of Capone as well.

Just want to add: Huge congratulations to Virginiabred on the success of her homebred pony at Devon! Keeping the Otterbridge legacy alive!

Well, I made a decision and my mare, Romanza, was bred yesterday.
In looking up Gatsby, another stallion, Parcival, also standing at Mountain Creek Sport Horses, caught my eye.
He is a lovely horse, with a successful dressage career, and a strong jumper pedigree, with some TB blood through Lucky Boy.

Thank you to Elisha at Mountain Creek Sport Horses - for being very easy to work with

Thank you to everyone who took the time to make suggestions. So many outstanding stallions out there!
Thank you too, to all who were so encouraging.

Now, fingers crossed!

Given up on the idea of Thoroughbreds for sport, even 3/4s TBs for eventing, have you?

Thank you for that, viney.
I have worked long and hard - actual work - and put considerable money where my mouth is - for Thoroughbreds in sport.
Every day for 25 yrs+.
My goal is to keep those precious bloodlines that I have worked so hard to defend and promote alive into the future.

When was the last time you bred a pure TB for sport? From what you have posted, you are breeding warmbloods with Fred’s blood in them. Does he not have any pure TBs that you could bred to a TB?

You know how passionate I am about the Thoroughbred as a sport horse.

You could not be more passionate than I am about the Thoroughbred as a sport horse, and about the importance of Thoroughbred blood in producing sport horses.
In many ways it has been my life’s work.
As I said, I have worked incredibly hard to produce and develop a quality Thoroughbred stallion for precisely that reason. As you know, standing a TB stallion for sport was definitely swimming upstream, and I think I was quite successful at it. Many of my mares have been high quality TB mares, and some have been WB.
Over twenty-five years, of ‘boots on the ground’, and quite frankly a whole lot of time, money, blood, sweat and all too many tears.
In answer to your question, when is the last time I bred a full TB for sport? My last foal crop, now 4 yrs old, of the 3, one is full TB, one is half-TB, one is 7/8 TB.

When is the last time you bred a full TB for sport?

Huh??? You breed your mare to the stallion best suited to her. Then you hold your breath, pray and hope you made the right choice. If you limit your choices to one breed - that is breeding backwards. There won’t be jockey club papers anyway as the mare is not full TB. I am sure she knows this mare and her family and made the best choice with what is available. I don’t …so I would never second guess her choice.
