Stallions you seldom hear about.....

Well sitting in front of my computer at -35 temps (BRRRRR!!!), I thought maybe I would start a post about stallions that are seldom talked about. Looking for accomplished stallions that maybe we don’t hear about too much or just don’t get advertised as much as others. A friend sent me this boy the other day… http://www.parcivalonline.com/introducing_parcival.htm I really liked him and had never heard of him before though his first breeding season isn’t really until next year. O.K. maybe I am just out of the loop  Just looking for some others to view on this cold day of hibernating…<grin> So please share any stallions you feel are successful in their sport that just don’t get the recognition.

I think a stallion that really gets overlooked is Special Memories (www.touchstonevalleyfarm.com). He is an older guy, but he had a successful sport career, has produced winners in several disciplines and has a great pedigree (especially if you are looking for some blood). Now, I’m biased, b/c I’m expecting a baby by him in 2010, but I do think he is underused. I know that some German breeders are starting to use his frozen over there, and this summer a colt of his won the colt championship at Tasdorf, in Germany (something not many American based stallions can claim).

Minus 35? I simply cannot imagine.

I think the majority of stallions are underused.

I’ve read that the typical stallion in NA breeds 6 mares. I don’t know where that stat comes from but it gets repeated a lot.

I watched the stallion auctions last year carefully and quite a few stallions did not get bids even for $500.

It could be worse this year.

Looking through the COTH stallion edition I saw a number of stallions that I had not heard of and who look very interesting for a variety of disciplines: dressage, jumper and hunter!

Trust me, you don’t want to even try!

Thats sad. Thats the time when people should be taking advantage of the stallions that they want to breed to.

My mind is boggled at the thought of horsekeeping in -35 degree weather!!!

I agree with OS that the majority of stallions are sadly underused.

One that stands out in my mind right now is the wonderful stallion Jupiter.

Galatois, by Galoubet, out of GP mare The Empress. Though hopefully people will be hearing more about him soon as he has a new breeding home with the owner of the late Alla C’Zar.

Liberty Gold. I was just talking to a breeder today about LG. Definitely stamps his offspring with wonderful, uphill movement and great temperament, yet underused, most likely due to lack of advertising and his tendency to produce plain chestnuts. Yet those breeders who use him tend to breed back. The woman I spoke to is expecting her third in the spring. Also, she’s an FEI rider who’s bred 25 horses and thinks the LGs have what it takes to go upper level. Personally, I hope his foals – the oldest of which will be four in the spring – prove to everyone that he’s well worth breeding to.

It’s actually not that bad…would definitely be if you were outside for too long though! I only live about 45 minutes away from Cindy’s Warmbloods and it’s definitely -35 C today (-31 F) and is supposed to go down to -40 F tonight. People always ask what it feels like, and the best way to describe it is…once you start going down below 5 F, it’s not that it feels any colder…you just get colder faster. But, if the wind is blowing, then it feels $#@^ cold!! You just have to make sure you dress warm.

I have friends that own two stallions that I LOVE:

Icarus de Carolina, a SF stallion in North Carolina

And Juan Valdez Carolina, a SF stallion in Ocala.

I have had a foal by Juan, and though he sadly didn’t make it, I am hoping to give it another try within the next few years. His oldest foals (as far as I know) are coming 5 this year, and I hope they will prove their sire. He is the only SF approved stallion from Bonjour.

I’d love to see Special Memories used more…

There’s one stallion down in the Temecula area named Liberty that I think is REALLY interesting but I’ve never seen or heard anything about him outside of speaking with his owners/their website. Really impressive pedigree and a good looking guy, with some Grand Prix wins under his belt.

I think Benvolio was SF approved, though he is deceased now and I am not sure whether Cornell has any frozen left.

I second this one. WHen he was imported and first advertised I thought WOW - mainly because I loved the mix of those lines and secondarily because his scores show that he has fantastic gaits and character. I passed his info on to some breeder friends. Sadly, his chestnut color put them off. I also was anxious to see how he performed in the ring but the owners don’t campaign him.

I didn’t realize Benvolio was SF approved. I thought he was approved through AHS. Either way, Bonjour was certainly a wonderful stallion!

Yeah I remember when Liberty Gold made a big splash a few years ago but to me, it’s a big turn off when the stallion does nothing. No competing or anything.

I recently stumbled across Joshua. He’s gorgeous, competing at I-2, and has just stunning babies.

I know two babies by Icarus, lovely, lovely babies. I also know one by Juan, and he’s such a loveable lug

Benvolio was not approved SF or AHS, he was only approved ISR/Old.

Amorex is one stallion that I think is not talked about enough. His gaits are just awesome and his babies show them as well.
