Stallions you seldom hear about.....

I would recommend both of these stallions also.

I have a 4 year old SF mare by Icarus who is going to be a nice small hunter. Icarus improved my mare.

I own Juan Valdez’s 1/2 sister (same dam). She is my daughter’s jumper and is one horse on my farm that is not for sale at any price. Nice jumper and very protective of her riders (need I say more about the no sale clause with my young girls and jumping ).

Re: Liberty Gold

There seems to be a high amount of followers for that stallion. He is lovely bred and we dont see a lot of ads for him becuase she does not have to. I, myself would love to have a LG foal.

Poor Cindy and Daventry! I guess I won’t complain about the balmy -1 degrees it is here in Langley today.
Great topic. Underused stallions that come to mind . . . Liberty Gold, Waterford, Facet. Would love to breed to Liberty Gold or Waterford, but then I once again run into the problem that both of these stallions have Weltmeyer up close in the pedigree, as do both of my broodmares. Bummer.

I simply adore the offsprings of this stallion - Regulus, standing at Dreamtime Farm in Lexington, KY - www.dreamtimefarm.com - this stallion has produced successful horses in dressage, eventing, hunters and field hunters.

Been there, done that, have NO intention of EVER doing it again

I’ve read that the typical stallion in NA breeds 6 mares. I don’t know where that stat comes from but it gets repeated a lot.

That’s not a North American stat, that’s worldwide. It’s taken from breed registries and stallion reports.

I watched the stallion auctions last year carefully and quite a few stallions did not get bids even for $500.

I don’t think you can really make a judgment on stallion auctions. Timing of them really isn’t the best. Most end shortly after Xmas and the holidays and right before tax season. I find that I get the vast majority of my bookings in April and May.

It could be worse this year.

And it “could” be better :D!!

I totally agree on the timing of the stallion auctions being too early.

Historically, I breed in May and June.

I know the registeries need to have their auctions for operating incomes but perhaps some creative thinking is needed in this economy.

I second Waterford. I’ve seen that stallion several times in person, he’s a nice stallion, and obviously has a very good temperament. Although his ads always look very much like QH ads to me, not really showing him off as the lovely Hanoverian that he is.

I’ve always been a bit confused as to why Williams is so under used. I can’t say I’ve ever seen a foal by him not bred by his owner. Plus, his owners mares are almost all Watch Me and Diamont mares. There’s not been a lot of variety in the mares he’s been used on. I’ve seen Williams in person several times as well, most recently doing a GP test. His stud fee is low, and his owner is so nice, I’m sure she’d be awesome to work with on breeding to Williams. He’s not getting any younger… I think he should get a little more publicity though. He’s a nice all around horse, with a good temperament. I’m just hesitant to use him because I’ve never seen any offspring by him not out of a Watch Me or Diamont mare.

Looking through the COTH stallion edition I saw a number of stallions that I had not heard of and who look very interesting for a variety of disciplines: dressage, jumper and hunter!
I think everybody BUT me has their stallion edition :frowning: Maybe it will come tomorrow…or I will just keep waiting.

Agree about Williams - have always wondered why there are not more of them.

How about Pik L? Heard some chatter during the USEF Young Horse Champs, but doesn’t seem to be used much by outside breeders. I think it’s impressive he was shown by Junior riders as well during his career.
I know two babies by Icarus, lovely, lovely babies. I also know one by Juan, and he’s such a loveable lug :D
Ike throws the most incredible jumpers! Aaron Vale has two right now (one of which I was hoping would turn into a dressage horse, as I wanted him:D) that will probably be shown at HITS this year.

My Juan foal (out of a Westfalen mare) was the most lovable baby I’ve ever known. I’m not sure that he wasn’t part canine. That little man would lay down next to me in the stall and put his head on my lap! And such a beautiful baby…

Also, Wildcard (Western Star-Pauline/Picard)

AHS stallion, scored 140 dressage at 100DT, 127.87 overall. Given a 10 on his trot…

Standing in NC

Prince Optimus, also standing in NC. Jumper bred, talented in jumping and dressage. Scored 127 at his 100 day test in Germany, was ridden by young riders in Germany, and had a long competitive career.

I think I must be the only one that thinks the auctions are too late! I have my breedings usually picked before the end of the year and hate waiting until Feb for a lot of the auctions. LOL! I guess I am in the minority!
Thanks for all the suggestions everyone! I have been checking them out!
It is supposed to be -37 tonight which is better than the -43 they HAD been predicting a few days ago. <grin>

Juan’s dam, True Petra, threw some very nice horses. Helga de Carolina and Giselle de Carolina (currently shown as Giselle III) are both doing well for themselves in the FEI levels in the Southeast, and her last foal, Oliveira Car, is preparing for the PSG. Her breeder lost a real gem when that mare passed.

Also - Where Waldo.
I really like that boy!!!

Lol I’m with your there! I’m getting desperate to make my final decisions for 2010! I keep changing my mind, but really need to settle on it and just focus on the upcoming breeding and foaling season

I think Olivier is under used. http://www.imajica.net/olivier.html

Judy Arnold (Wildcard & Rolling Stone) always has lovely boys, and is super to work with. http://www.stonecropfarm.com/stallions.html

Another reason the auctions are not a good way to evaluate market is because people hesitate to purchase a new breeding before they have healthy foals on the ground from the previous year’s breedings.

I have always thought that Tantris was underutilized. He is a GP dressage stallion and from the same dam line that produced Rubin Royal, Romanov, Rubin Action, Rumicello, Rubin Cortes, Gio Granno, Couleur Rubin, Couleur Rouge, Conterno Grande, etc.

I also agree about Liberty Gold being underutilized, along with Rollingstone and Olivier (more Grand Prix dressage stallions!), also Prince Optimus.

Regarding the stallion service auctions, we (Oldenburg - GOV) have toyed with holding ours later, but most mare owners seem to want to make their stallion decisions over the winter. Also, all the other SSAs are early in the year and we don’t know how many mare owners would be interested in participating in a later auction. Jan/Feb seems to work best for most breeders.

I third this. My 2010 picks are long completed. I miss out on the auctions every year because I have already purchased everything I need by then.

I bred my Selle Francais (SF/GOV approved) mare to Williams back in 2005. Williams definitely added size, a more active and powerful hind end, and a great temperament. My mare can be a bit opinionated, while her son has always been very laid back. I am very happy with the combination, but did not re-breed because I am content having just two horses right now. Also, I agree that Williams’ owner is great!
