Steve Coburn's comments after losing the Belmont

There sure are a lot of people named Laurie/Lori on this thread
I know! I feel like I’m supposed to participate or something.

I’m really disappointed that the Racing Forum is seen as unhelpful. For a long time we were considered the most helpful bunch of all the forums.

I think one of the problems is that newbies sometimes ‘demand’ answers without reading Racing 101 first. Many answers can be found in Racing 101 but certain newbies to the forum just want ‘a quick answer’ because they don’t have time to read Racing 101. Sigh.

Whether someone has won a major stakes race as a trainer has nothing to do with anything. Many fine trainers go through their careers without winning a major stakes race, especially if we’re talking about the Derby, Preakness, and Belmont, much less the Travers, Santa Anita Handicap, etc.

And, I’m sorry, demanding someone’s resume is just rude. I don’t care about the reasons.

As the other Forums on COTH can be tough, at least they make an attempt to answer questions to newbies of that discipline. Not mock and insult them.
Whoa. As I recall this thread descended into some nastiness not because you asked questions, but because you expressed what sounded like a pretty uneducated opinion about how skipping the Preakness to run fresh in the Belmont ISN’T what the Triple Crown is about. And there was the comment about throwing in “ringers.” And your expressed agreement with Coburn, who said running a fresh horse in the Belmont was the coward’s way out.

Having expressed those opinions, if you didn’t get the warm reception you anticipated, perhaps the rest of us could’ve been kinder and more forbearing. At the same time, you could take some responsibility for having been a little more opinionated about the way things ought to be done than your limited knowledge and experience entitled you to be. If you’re going to voice a strong opinion on a given subject, best to be able to back it up.

Otherwise God help you, especially on COTH.
