Stomatitis and the Dumped Kitty - Nic graduates 2/10

Listen to that buzzsaw purr! :heartbeat::cupid::smiling_face_with_three_hearts:

A thought:
@BrownDerby - You realize we (as Nic’s COTH Aunties) will require photo updates :camera::cat2:

That’s a fact.

What is so troubling to me is that this boy is so, so adoptable. Such good manners and pretty too. But the rescues and shelters are just bursting. I’m still hoping he can find a home nearby rather than someone having to make the slog up the Five.

If I were closer he could be my barncat.
I’ve been without since 2015. :disappointed_relieved:
Passerby cats are helping, but the #@!* mice are getting so bold they come out when they hear me mixing grain!
I brought my saddle in the house, worried they might snack on that.
Now it sits mocking me for being a weatherwuss & not riding :smirk:
Need to get the Poison baits w/o secondary kill.:skull:

Many years ago we had a barn cat who was so useless that she’d share her dry food in the tack room with the mice. She was an excellent heater cat however.

My own little 8# Verminator was Death to mice, voles & anything she could catch.
I miss her sweet self

Rescues and shelters are a great source of barn cats. Our county shelter will adopt barn cats out in pairs, fixed and vaccinated, at no charge. If you are in need, it is a good way to get feral cats that have no chance of adoption out of a shelter.

I know.
My 2 housecats were from a shelter as6mo kittens.
But I mistakenly “temporarily” relocated them to my basement after about a week in the barn, caged, when I caught a huge raccoon terrorizing them.
That was in 2015.
Neither is the least bit interested in the Great Outdoors :smirk:
Do these look like barncats?

Go Nico! Donation made. Love the love on COTH. I’ll check back in later and see if more is needed.

Hey! Did you steal my two cats ???
Mine are black with a moustache and orange too :grinning:

If I did, your black cat has faded & shaved.
My little (8#) guy is a gray tuxedo
And he has no 'stache, but a pretty decent soul patch
Here he’s also going a good job of hiding the 12# of orange chub beneath him

No refund, it’s money well spent.

i am loving the picture and video updates! what a little rockstar

my big fatty stomatitis kitty pictured upthread was also FIV+. it had zero implications for his life aside from the stomatitis and he lived to 18+/- (kidney disease). it may be a problem for a rescue but def not for us crazy cat ladies!

I took Nic back to the vet for a check-back on Wednesday. He is off of pain meds, still drooling, but healing - his body and mind are adjusting to a lot.

He is very comfortable in his room and has his choice of two beds. One is an animal heat pad under a fleece in a Costco veggie box (seen below) and the other is the fluffy round bed.

He remains incredibly easy to groom and handle. When I take him out of his room to the 2nd floor for our evening tv watching, he really wants to explore - and meow while exploring. We have an open floor plan so he wants to investigate the whole second floor and meet the resident cats. He likes to use the big scratching posts up there and is curious about everything.

Milo, Gemma and Wheata are completely non plussed by his presence. Maybe it’s his mellow vibe but the only one who gave him attitude is Gemma- which is par for the course for our tiny torbie princess. She gave him a baby hiss and he politely jogged away.

He did discover catnip

and sprinted up and down the stairs a few times with the nip-induced kitty crazies.

Since his mouth is tender he has told me that his new favorite food are the tiki cat mousse pouches and of course inaba tubes are high on his list. He’s not quite ready for kibble just yet, but it’s in a separate bowl for him when he is ready.

Goodness he’s so adorable. I wish you could keep him.

He’s so cute :smiling_face_with_three_hearts::smiling_face_with_three_hearts:

Glad he’s doing well and he certainly seems like a social guy.

Does he want outside or is he happy to be inside?

Any chance that Mr BC is a part of the tv watching… and being charmed by Nic?!

Haha he is mildly curious about nics progress since he does like kitties, but is firmly in the “4 cats only” camp.

I think he is happy to be inside, but is still adjusting. He is very good about using litter box and not scratching furniture/ carpet or howling at the door.

There was one night when mouse was meowing outside from the stoop and Nic started to meow from the inside. I fed mouse and the meowing subsided. It kind of broke my  to know mouse is out there with out his kitty BFF, but he is hanging out with other colony kitties.

When he is in his room he is very relaxed, but I think the larger house is a bit much, but he gets better about it every day. We had a TON of fireworks in the neighborhood last night for lunar new year and he handled it really well. Normal
House noises like the tv, ice maker, dishwasher etc are not scary to him do that’s a really good sign.

Awww…

It would mine too but unfortunately we can’t bring them all in. I wish there was more resources out there.

I have outdoor rated heated cat bed that I bought for the barn cats where I board. one passed and I have the extra bed I could send for mouse if you need it.

I’m sure it will take awhile to get comfortable in the house, but it sounds like he’s doing great!

I put the kitty heat pad on the stoop out there at night for the outdoor kitties. We don’t have a yard, so no place for a true outdoor kitty house unfortunately. Right now mouse is enjoying the extra wet food that Nic decided he does not care for. I’ve got a whole Costco pack of pate that Nic said no thank you to, so the colony kitties are chowing down on it.
