Hi everyone,
I am not a troll, just a longtime lurker. Got my Aug. Equus magazine today and WOW…there is a story on the future of eventing and many of the regulars here are quoted. It’s very comprehensive (which surprised me because I am often disappointed at Equus eventing coverage) and Laine Ashker’s quotes will either make you cry or throw up. I did both.

It’s never-ending. For all of you Laine supporters, instead of getting on the bb and trashing those of us with a pov - stop her from making public statements for a little while. It would help everyone to heal.

To paraphrase, Laine explains what happened when Frodo Baggins jumped the basket. She says he always had a problem with ducking and that’s what happened at Rolex (was not there so cannot issue a judgement). She comes off (I thought) very sympathetically although the story holds her accountable, if that makes sense? There are many, many people quoted and I got the feeling they wanted to say more…It is a very well done story and I would post it if not for copyright infringement. Maybe it is online somewhere but I don’t think Equus has a web site, per se.
I haven’t gotten Equus but thought I’d mention that Practical Horseman also has an article on the future of eventing. It mentions Darren & Laine (“rising young professional”) in the begining, and goes on to quote Jimmy Wofford, Denny Emerson, and Danny Warrington (a lot of Danny).
Sadly for eventing, when the rich amateurs buy the best horses someone gets hurt badly…in the H/J world they just knock down jumps. The great riders sit on the sidelines and watch the less capable with more means compete…I would love to have seen a Denny or a Michael or an O’Connor ride that horse (or horses since there are two that have succumbed during her tenure on them)…

You know, she isn’t the first person to make a mistake and kill a horse, won’t be the last. But she is the first person that has made a PR campaign out of it. My advice to her- sit down, shut up, take some riding lessons, get some experience. Be HUMBLE. BE HUMBLE. BE HUMBLE. You are not Karen O’Connor or Philip Dutton. You are a decent young rider who has had some varied success- there are a bunch of others just like you. YOU are not special. You are indeed like the rest of us. You actually are not worthy of the spotlight. Right now, you are a statistic. Get out of it, go learn, get better and earn your place in the spotlight by riding well, not by crying to the media about how you missed the Olympics. If you are good enough, you’ll earn the spotlight through hardwork and dedication and some luck, not by constant self promotion.
And maybe… maybe take a little more responsibility for what happened.

I just skimmed the first page or two of the article–it was already really late and I needed to get some sleep–but, yeah, Laine talked about how Frodo ducks at picture frame type jumps, that she planned to get his ‘rpms’ up because he wasn’t the ‘scopiest’ of jumpers.
I’m willing to donate money to a fund to buy the Ashker’s a case of duct tape and pay a maid who will apply it liberally to their mouthes…
I wasn’t there in person, but it sure wasn’t what I’ve seen on the two different videos I’ve seen either…

I have been reading this chanting, I’m not gonna say anything, I’m not gonna say anything, etc. but all I can think of is the picture of that poor horse trying to save both of their arses from the impossible distance she brought him to by putting in a desperate last minute chip in and now she’s making him the scapegoat. (yes, ironically she complained herself, about being made a scapegoat and now she’s doing the same to Frodo.)
She made a huge, fatal mistake. We are all human and we all make mistakes. The true test of character is taking ownership, being humble and learning.
Twice now she’s laid the blame on Frodo, on the Ca. video, she blames the accident on him saying he “just didn’t pick his feet up”. Hard to do when they are slamming into the front of a jump that you got no support from your rider coming in to like a bat out of hell.
Now it sounds like in the Equus article, she’s blaming him again only the story has changed and she’s saying he “ducked” and caused the accident. I just rewatched it. He did not “duck”. He made a desperate last minute attempt to save them when he realized that he couldn’t take off from the distance he’d been run in to.
She also blamed the criticism about the fall by saying she was the youngest person on the “Short List” (Winter Training List is all I can find her name on and I’m sure if there was another list that her name was on, they would not have missed the opportunity to link it under the “Media” links where they’ve linked any and every other list she’s been on ) by 8 years, which is, of course, not true. (Will, Clark and Jennifer).
Flame suit on but please, please, Laine, suck it up and own what happened. You are not infallible, you are human like the rest of us.

If you know your horse “ducks” at frames then why gun him and have him on the forehand? If they duck you should sit up and balance on the hind end in order to maximize the takeoff scope. HELLO…from a HJ

Well, I guess it all depends on your definition of ‘coffin’. If she thought a ‘coffin canter’ was the kind that puts you in a coffin, then she was pretty near perfect.
IMHO, folks, the best way to have this incredibly dysfunctional family “go away” is to stop giving them the attention they crave - and the first step would be to let these Lainey threads die a natural death (no pun intended). There has been enough outrage over the family’s affect and actions to paper the Sears tower. Now let’s take steps to have them disappear into the sunset for all of our peace of mind.
