Worth noting is that a few years a go a Phipps filly (Dancinginmydreams?) broke down behind and was saved for broodie duty.
Being as the brakes are up front on horses, it’s easier to stop a horse with a hind injury. Front injuries often cause falls.
Also, it may be easier for barbaro to relearn to bear weight on the injured hind leg than he would had it been a foreleg.
Just thought I’d add something encouraging.

There are some other interesting clips in there, such as Barbaro’s doctor preparing for an orthopedic surgery (not Barbaro’s, of course).
That is sort of what I was thinking. Since horses bear so much weight on their front end, it could be easier for him since his was a rear injury.

On NBC they had a short segment on Barbaro’s injury and showed clips of other famous racehorses (Secretariat, Ruffian (not the breakdown) and others). No new news, but a nice segment.
I just can’t watch him break down again, it just breaks my heart. I wish they could show something a bit more pleasant. Maybe him playing in his paddock a few days ago…
