Straight from the insider's.. Barbaro had another good night!! Up and At 'em!!!!

They just repeated the same news conference with the vets from last night … nothing new.

Waiting anxiously for news.

The funny thing is that I don’t want to turn on a news channel, I want to hear it here first!

Edgar Prado is back at Belmont riding today - he just finished third in the Shuvee Handicap with last year’s 3 year old champion filly, Smuggler.

Wow my dictation skills sucks!!

Ok guys sorry it took so long. Here’s the 5:10 No Update, update transcript:

Talking Head: “Right now we are joined by Espn’s Jeanine Edwards’s at the University of Pennsylvania that’s the site of the surgery today on Barbaro. Jeanine what’s up?”

JE: “Well right now it’s a few mins after 5 and Barbaro is still in surgery we have no updates at this point he has been in surgery since around 1 o’clock this afternoon now they did tell us before the surgery that it was expected to tae several hours, 4-5 hours. So right now we are thinking that he is in the tail end of his surgery. And I think its obviously a good sign that Barbaro is still in surgery because if the leg had appeared to be irreparable once they went in there, we probably would have heard something by now because they probably would have pulled the plug at that point. But right now they are still working to repair his leg.”

Talking head: “Jeanine how does something like happen? Breaking an ankle so severely?”

JE: "Well its just one of those things that happens that you’ll never be able to explain. The horse was coming up to the race perfectly, uh by all accounts he was doing as good as he could possibly do. And its just one of those freak things where you might take a bad step or just the torque or there’s really no way to explain it but by all accounts he was coming up to the race as well as he could have uh but this is a type of injury you don’t see that often, especially on a hind leg and Dr. Dean Richardson, who is the chief of surgery here at the University of Pennsylvania, he described the nature of the injury and was very realistic in his opinion of what happened to Barbaro.

(Cut to quote and clip from pre-surgery press conference)

DR: “It’s a very complicated fracture uh he broke the bone above his fetlock as well as the bone below his fetlock and he also dislocated that joint so it’s a very very serious injury. Uh the plan, the aspects of the surgery will be dictated slightly by what we find at surgery but the bottom line is we will attempt to perform a fusion of that joint to stabilize it and make it comfortable enough for him to walk on. We do not see this severe of injury frequently because the fact that most horses that suffer this severe of an injury are typically put down on the track.”

(Cut back to Jeanine)

JE: "So as you can hear from Dr. Richardson, Barbaro is up against it. They went into the surgery saying that he had a 50/50 chance of survival. After the surgery he will be put into a recovery pool where he will stay for about an hour. He will essentially be floating in a raft to prevent him from doing any damage to the repaired leg and the big question will as to when they get him on solid ground and he actually has to put weight onto the leg that could be the turning point as to see if Barbaro can support weight on that repaired limb.

Talking Head: " Jeanine you think about what is essentially a broken lower leg. Why can’t the horse survive on just three good legs?"

JE: " Well you know as we’ve been saying horses have very poor vascular systems to their lower limbs. They have no way really, really no muscles in the lower limbs in the lower part of the leg. And muscles assist in pumping the blood flow back up to the heart. So with a poor circulatory system you don’t get very good healing. Also horse’s feet are very small compared to their body size. ! I mean 2 of their feet equal about 1 of ours and yet they are supporting 7 times the body mass or weight of a human. So they need all 4 feet to have the weight distributed evenly. Otherwise there is just too much of a load and they cannot support the weight ad it begins to fail."

Talking Head: “Jeanine Edwards thank you for joining us on ESPN News. I am sure you will be joining us once the surgery is complete. Thanks a lot.”

I just got home and was checking in for a report. Still sending my thoughts and my best jingles for Barbaro and his family

Jingle Jingle Jingle Jingle Jingle Jingle … Jingle Jingle Jingle

Well not much of an update however they just said two minutes ago on ESPN news that once the surgery is over there will be an actual press conference.
So I am keeping ESPN news on until I hear something.

I will post when I do.

They just said on TVG that the press conference would be later this afternoon or this evening.

Does anyone know if he’s still in surgery, or is he in the pool yet?

In the Preakness pre-race coverage, they showed footage of Barbaro’s full brother, born earlier this year. Wouldn’t be awesome if Matz got to train that horse? Same owners, so maybe.

I am thinking with so many broken bones in that leg they are just piecing him back together and that is what is so time consuming…bless the surgeons and technicians that are in there working their butts off in this critical procedure…talk about PRESSURE! I believe if he comes out of the surgery ok he will pull through in his recovery process…keep thinking positive thoughts everyone! (and make sure you keep giving your horseys extra special hugs :))

As of the 5:10 “Non update, update” he is still in surgery.

Stay tuned we are tracking the progress as live as possible.

~Emily

The dam of Barbaro was bred back to Dynaformer the day before the Derby and is checked in foal…so another full sibling is due in March of 2007. The mare slipped her 2005…also a Dynaformer.

As of 5:38pm EST he was still in surgery.

I don’t have TVG or HRTV, what should I watch for updates? ESPN news or regular ESPN?

ESPN News

ESPN News is going to go right to the live news conference when the surgery is finally over.

ESPNNews probably has the best coverage of the channels (other than the specialty racing networks, which are, of course, supreme:yes: )

Directv channel 207, ESPN News.

Also TVG is tracking this as well but is, with good reason, a step behind. (Since they are covering all the live races they normally do daily. LOTS of races to squeeze in between. )

ESPN news is doing a good job. I have heard 3 more mentions of Barbaro and waiting for updates since the 5:10 non-update.

~Emily

Has anyone seen how ESPN (regular) is doing on coverage? I have it on downstairs but have not been going down to check since the track meet.

ESPN 1… change channel
