Suggestions on a smaller Event type Stallion?

Looking for a friend. The mare is a Oldenburg, lots of TB blood and pretty hot. The mare is big and rider wants a stallion that is on the smaller side. (15h-16h)

If you have any experience with the stallion, or babies please post your experience along with a link. Thanks!

Most wb registries will not approve stallions under 16h, either officially or unofficially. Is registration a consideration for your friend?

I don’t think she cares about registration.
Mare is AWR registered.

Look at Super Star, the Akhal Teke. JER has bred to him and very much likes what he has done for her. However, she did end up with one pony, a talented eventing pony, but a pony none the less.

Super Star is actually already on my list!

I am also looking for a small warmblood stallion. I’ve got my eye on Ridley, but would like to have other options as well. The mare is 16.3 TB. Incredible event horse. Puts wonderful brains on all her babies. But her colts tend to be huge. (Last one, by Voltare, is 18.1h)! Her fillies tend to be a bit smaller, but I’d love to get one that was no larger than 15.3-16h.

I want to stay away from the true pony stallions as I’ve had enough bad luck with Cushings disease.

What about a Connemara or sport pony stallion?

I’m not too familiar with ISH bloodlines, but possible they could be smaller.

There are a handful of WB stallions that are 16 or 16.1 but not many.

Like this guy. He seems cute. Anyone know anything about him?

Connemara is probably a good choice too!

Halimey Go is listed as 16. 1 but he looks very fine --perhaps you could find out how big he has been throwing them as he is out of a smaller anglo-arab sire line though his dam had size it seems.

I thought trakehner will approve a 15.3 sized stallion?

What about Diarado? My understanding is that even though he is 16-16.1hh he tends to throw small

Diarado is closer to 16.3.

I bred one of my AFR daughters, who is a big girl, to VDL Windsor H, with the hope of producing an eventer.
He is a lovely horse, great temperament, who shows in the jumpers with his AA owner, 16h and quite refined.
He is by Indoctro out of an Ahorn mare, and is 1/2 brother to the eventer stallion VDL Ulando H.

I love my yearling colt, he is very handsome, elegant and athletic, with a sweet temperament and moves like he is on springs.

VDL Windsor has a FB page.

I’d like to suggest Belafonte d’Avalon Black German Riding Pony…He is a major competitor…He was Area V Champion at training level. He is currently competing in Eventing…Placed 2nd at the Blue Ribbon Hunter/Jumper show at 1.05 and 1.15 meters…This is among the Big Horses not Ponies…Was 8th at the AEC’s last fall
in training. He currently is competing at prelim. He is the REAL DEAL…Perfect Gentleman and adorable as can be

SH:)

ArdCeltic Art was a lovely Connemara stallion … unfortunately he past away but it looks like they are offering frozen semen on the website. He was 15 hands I think.

Look at Vinca.

I was also wondering about a holsteiner stallion also as the holsteiner breeders seem to have a sense of what stallions (regardless of the stallion’s size) needs a big mare to “get to normal” (16.1ish) in his children.

I too thought it was suggested somewhere that Diardo needed a big roomy mare and that his mare family was known to throw small (even if he is a big guy) but my memory can be totally wrong.

Diarado is a very petite 16.3

Check out Orujo De La Galerna (http://www.teamwindchase.com/OrujoStallionPage.htm). Phyllis Dawson is the agent and I have a son of his who is spectacular, but on the small side. He is fancy with scope to burn and a great brain

Fred, thank you for mentioning VDL Windsor H. He is perhaps not so well-known as his more famous paternal brother, VDL Ulando H, but having owned and trained both stallions, and having offspring from both stallions, I feel that Windsor produces a type that is very suited to eventing. I invite people to visit his facebook page, and check out his offspring album. Windsor’s oldest offspring have begun their careers in the jumper ring, and are showing themselves to be careful, smart and very brave. Best of all, they all love to work and don’t require a pro to get them around the ring.
