Sunday Morning on CBS Triple Crown comments???

Anyone heard the CBS Sunday Morning commentary on the Triple Crown?

https://www.cbsnews.com/news/jim-gaffigan-on-why-he-doesnt-care-about-the-triple-crown/

“Why are we still doing that?” is how it starts and it goes downhill from that.

“How terrible, gambling ruins lives and horse racing is all about gambling”.

“Why would anyone that loves horses think riding horses is showing horses love?”
“I love my kinds, I should be riding them!”

I wonder, who decided that commentator was the best person for that story, clearly such an expert on horses, racing and the Triple Crown?

The story was a puzzler in the context of a Triple Crown story on national news.
Generally, if they put a comedian to do a sketch, they also have a regular story by an expert on the story being told.

question would be “Why listen to CBS?”… just another reason why not to

Because others are worse?

I’m with clanter… why on earth would one listen to any of the major media outlets and expect any granule of honest, realistic journalistic reporting?

CBS also doesn’t have the TV broadcast rights to the TC… NBC does  (wonder how much of the snarky comments were driven by that?)

I too was wondering just that.

Well, NBC has gotten so totally tacky and tasteless in its presentation of the Kentucky Derby that maybe CBS wants to get all the TC races? It was interesting to compare Royal Ascot last summer and the Derby yesterday – both on NBCSN – the classy way they did the same things the NBC people do at the Kentucky Derby in such bad taste.

As for the “horse racing and gambling” comment referred to, when I was growing up they did not talk about the betting so much. They did mention the odds, but they did not focus on that. That has been a HUGE change in the TV presentation in recent years from what it was when I first watched the races. Back then they talked about the horses, about their breeding. Yesterday on the Derby broadcast they showed each colt’s sire and dam. NBC doesn’t do that with our TC races. And when the commentators are blasting off about who they bet on, and who non-horsey celebrities bet on, it’s just encouraging viewers to “have a flutter.”

It used to be classy. Not anymore.

Well it was a commentary by Jim Gaffigan, the comedian, so it was supposed to be funny. I agree it missed the mark and was pretty anti-racing, but I wouldn’t read too much into it, or CBS’s attitude in general.

Bizarre considering Jim Gaffigan’s niece rides and competes H/J. Oh, and owns a horse.

I am with you on how tacky and tasteless the majority of the NBCxx coverage of racing is… I watch TVG as they cover the other tracks until just about when the post parade starts then I flip to NBCxx. TVG cannot cover those NBCxx races live. I am more than thankful that TVG does not use Tara Lipinsky and Johnny Wier for their prime race coverage

I think last year I might have watched TVG for Royal Ascot (I think they had the coverage, I know one of their analysts was there live). I do love the pomp and pageantry that goes on at Royal Ascot and hope those traditions continue.

It was a bit by a comedian. It doesn’t really need some sort of serious counter story, even if it wasn’t very funny to begin with.

In years past the better coverage and stories about the horses and owners has been cable NBC stations. Before that it was ESPN. The actual NBC coverage has been short with not much but the race and the odds for some time now.

Have they stopped the coverage on cable channels? I have not been able to watch for a few years.

Oh, Puh-Leeze!
Lots of wadded undergarments here…

Like @Mango20 says: it was comedian Jim Gaffigan, it was meant to be funny.
Even as a horseperson - although I have no Racing contacts - I found it amusing.
Especially the part about the horses caring about winning the Triple Crown. As if…*

*yes, I realize racehorses do have a desire to win, but does anyone really think they know there are 3 legs they need to take 1st place to mark Done on their Bucket Lists?
(see now? I made a funny too: Bucket List… for horses )

It was a commentary. By a comedian. On a not primarily news show.

CBS This Morning airs before Face The Nation. Its feature. Not hard news. Most people know that.

Yeah  And as aside, there’s a Racing forum on the site. Maybe this thread would be better there.

Not funny at all. I found it very irritating

I thought it was funny.

“I mean, I love my children, but I’m not going to make them … oh, maybe horseback riding makes sense.”

I’m sooooo over the NBC “coverage” of all these races. I find I am fast forwarding thru 90% of it. What a waste of time. And will someone please please I beg of you make Tara Lipinski and Johnny Weir go away? So annoying.

Except this was not about racing as much as how some in the general news media choose to present some of our horse world in a less than balanced way.

To only show a negative comic sketch like that is not an excuse when not balanced in a whole story, as we would expect, following journalistic standards.
That felt out of place for their regular Sunday Morning programs, not what you expect of them.

At least that was my opinion, why I posted that here.
